A different approach to the bible
    #12873188 -

http://bit.ly/9zEM0U

The Bible, as if you didn't know, is the core of Christianity. People go to church so that somebody else can read and interpret the Bible for them. These interpretations range from creationism, actuality, metaphorically, and so forth. I don't know them all, and I don't plan to. But we can certainly take a look at it for ourselves.

The Holy Bible, a combination of the two testaments of 66 books, is being taught to children, unstable adults and seniors alike. In many different and misleading ways, of course. All which, unfortunately, lead to self-doubt and reliance on others in the church.

Church does not teach self-reliance, nor does it teach the real message, at least not the one that is blatantly obvious. The bible is not actuality, it is not about heaven or hell. It is something much more simple than that -- only the blind won't comprehend it. The preachers don't want to know the truth, because they want to make it.

If I were Jesus, and I were to judge upon others, the churches would be first to go. Let me explain why.

I'd love to see what shroomerites have to say.

Whatever the bibles real message is, it's been so mucked up it might be a good idea to scrap it and go elsewhere to find ideas on how to journey through life.:satansmoking:

I'm actually not sure - but I've heard over and over how 'individualism' and 'all men are created equal' and the enlightenment period in general was a consequence of the ideals of christianity. something like that anyway.

very very few people of any religion seem willing to look deeply into anything though, haha.

The Bible, the canonical Bible, is a collection of writings from the Jewish Tenach (obviously, Jews don't say Old Testament compared to a New, which they do not embrace) - the Torah )Pentateuch), the Haftarah (Prophets), several letters attributed to Paul (although some are clearly forgeries, unless Paul had multiple personalities), some additional authors, Epistles, and four gospels. This collection was put together from a much vaster collection of writings, but writings with very different theologies. Writings with theologies that embodied a 'fully-realized eschatology,' like Thomas, which puts the emphasis on the Here & Now, instead of some future time ('partially-realized eschatology'), were immediately discarded and relegated to the flames. Any theology that did not make history and linear time central, was destroyed, because the Church and its practices HAD to be made absolutely indispensable for salvation. Augustine made up the doctrine of Original Sin, which absolutely required Christ, the grace of Christ, and the sacraments as the only means for the receiving of grace, because 'Outside the Church, there is no salvation.'

If you read Spong's book, you'll see how the New Testament books are contrivances for the most part. Not historical events, but a recapitulation of Jewish themes, set in a new context, with new characters, and geared to non-Jews. The gospel of John is essentially Greek mythology cast in a veneer of Jewish characters. The Synoptic gospels Mark, Matthew and Luke are very different from John, yet John's theology dominated the others, and most people don't even see that the Synoptics are about 'a man anointed by God,' where John's theology is about 'God clothed in flesh.' John is pure Hellenism, Greek mythology wherein a mortal woman is impregnated by Deity, non-sexually, resulting in a virgin birth of a demigod- divine-human hybrid. Christ is a unique specie, not different from us by degrees, but radically unique.

Catholic>Orthodox>Protestant historical trends, never ever maintained the Messianic cult which began in and remained in synagogues for the first 150 years until the theological schism forced Messianic Jews into the role of Christ-ians. Catholics made the Bible as it stands. They forbade non-clergy to possess the book under pain of death. NOT Christian. The crusades, inquisition, burning times, pogroms, forced exile of Jews, wars with Muslims, etc. are NOT Christian, if one understands anything about the Messianic mind, from the Bible or its Jewish precursors, including the Kabbalistic psychology of a spiritual being.

With the exception of certain rare souls, who practice a faith that embodies a Zen-like, Tolle-like acceptance, I have never met Christians who are not literalists, childishly clinging to religious myth and metaphor as historical events, past and future, leaving nothing but the stories in the present. Paul was clearly wrong about the immanent end of the world and the return of Jesus Christ in glory. Paul  had a 1st century, 3-tiered universe, including a flat earth, a Zeus-like Father Deity who dwelt in the 3rd heaven above the dome of the starry sky. Christ as Adam Kadmon, as the archetype of a balanced human being - suspended between Heaven and earth, between Good and evil (thieves), with the symbolism of a solar-lunar eclipse-conjunctio, with masculine active and feminine passive elements in check, makes a lot of sense to me. I have endeavored in my own life to become the kind of Jew that Jesus is portrayed as being. Physical virgin birth, physical resurrection, transcendence of physical nature as miracles, are ALL Jewish midrash and metaphor for the Mystery of self-conscious awareness, and the birth of consciousness from the unconsciousness of the Garden of Eden (maternal womb), Individuation and transcendence of duality. The Truth is there, but, as you say, MOST are completely blind to it. 'The kingdom of Heaven is spread out before you, and people see it not.'
