Can you truly be an animal lover...
    #12836694 -

...and not be a vegetarian.

How can you love all animals but kill them at the same time?

Yes, just like you can be a vegetarian and not love animals.

Things aren't always black and white.

Vegetarians kill animals as well... I'm not too big on eating most meats though. I like chicken and turkey meat but for the most part I'm into veggies and fruits.

How can you love something that you perpetually kill?

Of course you can. But what drove me away from eating meat was the fact that I am a huge animal lover and it started feeling very wrong due to that.

I for one love animals and hate the abuse that the major distributors put them through before they make it to our plates.

But I don't eat enough other types of food to solely be a vegetarian.

So there is one scenario right there.

I love animals, especially how good they taste. Come on, people have been eating meat for thousands of years, and in the wild animals eat each other all the time. We're not doing anything unnatural. Have you seen a deer getting eaten by wolves? Compared to that, how we kill and eat animals is totally humane. Not all animals are the same. I would never eat a dog, but a cow? Hell yes. There wouldn't even be as many cows on earth as there are if we didn't eat them.

Not to mention, have you ever owned a chicken? They are dirt dumb. Cute, but dumber than a rock, and mean. They barely even count as alive.

This was my catalyst as well...I don't know the answer to my question.

Obviously one could love animals that they know, their dogs, looking at birds...ect.  But to TRULY be an animal lover don't you love all animals, even those not directly in your life?  Wouldn't one love the animals being served at restaurants before they were killed, and knowing that ultimately they were killed because you paid money to eat them, this would cause the animal lover to cease this killing of that in which they love?

How can someone love plants yet perpetually kill them?

I have accepted that I must get my energy from another life form. When I worked at a produce farm I felt bad for harvesting micro greens (which are just baby plants) or lettuces. They're living things too.

I love animals but I am very fond of eating meat.  That doesn't mean that I agree with the way that they are mass-bred and chopped up for our pleasure.  It also doesn't enter your mind because you are not the one who killed it. I am just a consumer who happens to love animals.

Are more people vegeterian because its a healthier choice of eating or due to moral principals abouts killing animals?

why are you pitching an argument against a question? why are ya trying to convince him that eating animals is natural? all he/she asked is if you can truly be an animal lover while eating animals.

Also, you hint to a major problem with loving.

You value a dogs life over a cows, for a dog is more 'deserving' of your love.

To me it seems you have no compassion towards animals. Not saying that is bad or good, just observing.

And to the OP, I think that maybe you can love animals and kill them for their meat. I think (or at least movies/stereotypes have convinced me) that maybe Native Americans loved animals. I feel that if you respect the animals and the significance of taking their life to feed yourself, you can love animals while sacrificing them to yourself.

The question is arbitrary. I love many human beings, yet Id eat a fellow human if biological survival depended on it. Their is over 100,000 million years of meat eating in your genetic ancestry, while vegetarianism is only an idea that we have recently conceived in the last few hundred years of our philosophical history. I'ma stick to billions of years of biological evolution and say vegeterianism is a silly silly idea....

I think the majority of people that say "I love animals but I love meat" couldn't slaughter/butcher the animal themself.

I wanted to have livestock for a bit of cash + meat, I bought 2 cows... after about 2 hours I decided I could never kill them  :crankey:

Now they just run around, eat grass, chill under trees and moo :sun:

I could never kill a cow, sheep, pig or chicken... so when I finally get out of the city centers I'll most definitely be going vegetarian.
