> He was holding it by the rear leg. That's not how you hold a cat.
Well... It's not hurting it. Maybe it's not the freidliest way to treat them, but it's hardly torture or abuse.
Unless the guy is actually hurting the cats it's not right to try and cause legal problems for the guy. If he was really hurting them you would probably know it because he would be all scratched up. Believe me if you really piss off a cat they can do some serious damage to a person's arms.
I just think it's pretty fucked up to be calling the authorities on someone unless they are really doing something that hurts an animal enough to cause it physical injury or serious pain. I mean come on, reality check guys!

Allowing it to happen at all is encouraging deranged behavior. I don't know about you, but I don't think good company includes dominating alcoholics that get jollies from yanking on animal appendages. I would have slapped the bitch and called him a piece of shit.

If the cat took it without leaving the guy's arms shredded, then it wasn't really hurting it. Seriously they're not going to take very much pain and certainly no injury before they turn and claw you.
I know a guy that would often hold his cats upside down from the legs and they didn't mind a bit. From the description it didn't sound like the cat was crying or trying to get away.
> I would have slapped the bitch and called him a piece of shit.
And you would be sitting in jail as you should be. If you don't like how people play with their pets then leave. There's not a jury in the world that would call that animal cruelty.
If the guy's getting meaner than that then by all means, step up. Otherwise you're just being foolish.

So, I went over there last night and hung out for a little bit...
We talked a bit, and he claims not to remember this happening. At first, he thought I was just pulling his leg (no pun intended).
I'm reasonably satisfied from our conversation that this was a freak occurrence, and it does not match his normal demeanor at all.
With that said, I'll still keep an eye out for the cats, just in case.

i'm fiddling with the mp3 player, look up and he's dangling the younger male cat by its back paw and shaking it I was speechless... he then said something to the effect of "Oh, so you think you can hiss at me?" it ended up on his lap, he prodded it in the side and then grabbed and was pulling pretty hard on one of the hind legs...
It really sounds like the cat minded a bit...
I probably wouldn't excuse it as "playing with pets" either...

I disagree. If the cat was punished for clawing before, he may just try to get away now, realizing there is no point in trying to fight back. I've never seen two cats that were exactly alike in personality either, so I don't think you can make such a generalized blanket statement...

I would do the time with no regrets I doubt a drunk abusing his pets would want to get the police involved, though. I would hope you don't encourage or practice this sort of behavior.

Firstly, I don't think you read the entire FP. There was pain involved, and a front declawed cat isn't going to do shit to someone's arm.
Secondly, I stated in another post that this is a friend, and that there was no way I'd call the authorities without having a conversation with him regarding everything.
Also, this "STFU and mind your own business" thing just doesn't apply at all... If you're trying to get a rise out of people, go elsewhere... There was a genuine concern for the safety of the animals involved...
Anyways, everything is settled for the time being....

ABZ, it sounds like you handled this the right way. Given that it was the 1st time that you had ever seen anything like this take place, and given your mental state, and his intoxicated state, I don't think it would have been wise to get all confrontational with him right then and there. Being drunk doesn't excuse someone from mistreating their animals, but, if you spoke with him and feel like it was an isolated occurance, you've done your part for now. I'd continue to keep an eye on the situation and make sure it doesn't happen again - if it does, I think you should offer to take the cats, or tell him point blank that you're calling the SPCA before you do so. And to the person who thought that it wasn't a big deal to dangle a cat upside down by it's hind legs, and poke it - I hope you never own an animal. Seriously.
