Im a little high so my language may be rambling.. not sure which part you couldnt make out.. One thing that I was getting at is that the more complex a substrate and its nutrient profile are, the greater the complexity of enzymes the myc has to produce to break it down and consume the substrates resources (compared to how your body feels when digesting a huge delicious steak in contrast to a bowl of ramen).

Although it is possible to train the myc to pre-construct the necessary enzymes in order to give it a head start in colonizing a particular substrate. An example of this would be adding a very tiny bit of manure to an LC then if you use this LC to innoc. a manure based sub bag it will already "know how" to consume the substrate right away

It's funny that you mentioned this, but I have noticed that my grain LC's are always slower to begin colonization than sugar based LC's. Grain LC made from WBS, and both used to inoculate WBS. Mushrooms don't create new enzymes based on the what they are breaking down, either they have the ability to produce them or they don't, they can't learn how to produce new enzymes.

@citizen obviously you have never bought any large quantities of the stuff.. atleast 1 in 30 bricks contains visible trich colonies.. have seen this from 3 differnt suppliers.. I order in boxes of 50 ive got some pics around here if you believe this to be untrue.. its quite common

You obviously haven't seen his setup, or the coir he ordered. Never seen trich in mine either. Looked for some old posts about it but found nothing. There are many more who have had experiences with coir being contam resistant than those who have found trich in their coir. In fact, you are the first I've heard say so.

I'm not too sure about that. I know that bacteria learn new tricks and can be taught to eat new food sources. They also "learn" to produce different chemicals in defense against other competing colonies, like chemical warfare. I don't think we can say that mycelium can't do the same, can we?

I know a few who do that.  it does work..:scaryshroom::thumbup:

Fungi makes no distinction between a rotting tree in the forest and a fence post. They are just as likely to attack one as the other. Although individual species of fungi may be highly specific to particular substrates, as a group they attack virtually anything with the very powerful enzymes the fungus is already programmed to produce.

13, like I mentioned before, I have noticed the complete opposite. Don't ask me why.

Yeah but how hard is it to throw some worm castings, gypsum and coffee grinds in your coir to bring up nute levels? Worm castings, gypsum and coir are a one-stop shop at a good hydroponics and grow shop, and then go flirt with the coffee shop girls for some free grinds (no pun intended) and you end up with something quite nutritious, don't you? I sure hope so because that's my current strategy. Coir is no super-nutrient, so you throw some good stuff in.

meh, Evolution would take care of that.

meaning they adapt to survive.

thats what Im doing with Liberty caps, evolving them to being used to fruiting in warmer (indoor) environments.

doesnt work well at first but with some trial and error and persistence you can get mushies to have the characteristics that you want them to have.  whether it be substrates or temps or aesthetics.

you can play god with agar plates and some spores if you know what your doin.:sun:

Don't you mean you are selecting for traits that you like.

They adapt if they undergo the right mutations. Many species have died out because they couldn't adapt. Some mushrooms just won't grow on a particular substrate, even though another species might do just fine. Not saying that's the case with what you are doing, just in general.

As for producing "new" enzymes, evolution just doesn't happen that fast. The reason you notice bacteria adapting so quickly is because of the sheer number of replications in a relatively short time frame. More replications=more likely chance for mutations=more likely chance of adaptation. The myc you spawned to a bulk substrate is in one phase of it's life cycle. Bacteria adapt over many short generations. Hope that helps SporeTek.

Shorter life spans do enable faster rates of mutation, no argument. But it sounds like you're a Darwinist. I mean, it sounds like you might be implying the old idea that evolution is driven by random errors in the genetic code. You don't really believe that, do you?

yeah, they call that darwin's theory not darwin's law for a reason. It hasn't been proven and I for one do not subscribe to it. Also, even if you are correct about the short life evolution, mycelium forms a network, an intelligent network. Life finds a way. Terence McKenna believed that this particular mushroom is a communication system and was put here by "others". I'm with Terence all the way.

that is evolution :picard:

Im starting with wild spores and the ones that adapt and survive to live another generation evolve the ability to fruit in the warmer environments.  keep this continum and the end product is a genetic set of spores that evolved from cold weather to warm weather fruiters due to my genocidal "trate selecting".  ie evolution.

Yeah, but bacteria promiscuously acquire DNA across species, this is extremely well established.  Most mutations are not beneficial, but they take advantage of the ones that are, and if you replicated every half-hour or so there'd be...nah, don't want to go there.

Point is, taking advantage of another species' evolutionary history costs the bacteria almost nothing, but makes it damn hard to ID some bacteria to a particular species.

Naturally everyone has their own opinion about the way things work. My point is that just because it appears to be evolution and I can't prove evolution doesn't exist; does not prove evolution exists. I simply prefer to believe there is a greater intelligence behind what appears as evolution.

I started a whole new argument and not a single one of you even slightly understood anything I was attempting to get at.

Guess that's my fault. should have explained myself more, but when you start to get into this type of discussion, you can never provide enough detail, and then when you don't people jump all over you. (see above as an example)

All of the above assumptions are flat out wrong. Sorry to disappoint.
