cool story RR, but where did you infer I thought fungi acted as plants do in regards to nutrient intake? We both know nutrients are important to the mushroom life cycle, not sure were the plant reference came from.. please elaborate my good sir

In other news.. I wasnt exactly referring to Cotton Seed Hulls but tiss a different beast all together. Its comprised of thermophylically composted cotton gin waste as referenced in the Ower/Mills morchella patent. It has properties unique unto itself, and is a completely original substance that has been shown to containing several unidentified mycroorganisms which aid in preventing contamination as well as fixing nitrogen from the atmosphere. It works wonders all fungi but especially mycorrhizals and I also happen to believe it is ONE of the keys to Morchella Ascocarp formation..

Now that was just a low blow in the 2nd lil diddy RR! haha.. You have to admit RR just because something can produce mushrooms ALMOST as well as another substrate does not mean = in nutrition. And although it does perform very well, I believe in your heart of hearts you know that in terms of B/E it cannot match H poo. Coir has an awful habit of contaming after 1st or 2nd flushes. Its like ramen, prep it, cook and eat it blazzingly fast and filling too, untill 30 min later your left feeling empty lol..

Have you not noticed that Cube mycellium breaks it down in almost half the time it takes to go through H Poo?If it where so nutritions it would not colonize so damn incredibly fast (bc if so the myc would have to produce a greater abundance and variety of digestive enzymes and such, which would slow colonization). It really doesnt matter though, neither can compare with a mixture of the 2 with a few other goodies..

What are you trying to say here? The nutrients are different, yes, but you add nothing more to that argument. I've had coir grows well outperform poo, and vice versa. Coir/poo have always colonized tubs in the same timeframe for me, and both are broken down at the same rate, honestly haven't been able to see the difference.
The only times coir, or any substrate for that matter, have contaminated on me were when coffee was added to the mix. Coir is extremely contaminant resistant IME.

I've found coir to be the equal of manure when growing dung and straw loving species.  Shittake refuses to fruit on it at all.  Unless your spawn is contaminated, coir is good for a very long time.  In fact, you can wet coir down and toss it in a corner for months and it won't get moldy.

I don't get involved in discussion of 'nutes', and I promise I wasn't singling you out(koopa).  If you look back six or seven years ago when I first started posting here, I brought the idea of coir as a substrate to the shroomery.  I got banned at the other mushroom site for spreading disinformation, by calling coir a good substrate material.  When I repeated the claims here, I didn't get banned, but sure got called a few other choice names before people started using it and found it works.

The simple fact is, humans have been studying plants for thousands of years, but are just now beginning to learn about fungi.  I don't think anyone really knows what 'nutes' fungi requires.  We experiment with different substrates, repeating with ones that work, and pushing aside those which fail.  That's how we got to where we are today, and future generations will build on our work.

I'm also working on a morel fruiting tek.  I suspect it has more to do with the strain than with ingredients in the substrate.  If you can find a spot where the morels pop every year regardless of whether there was a fire or other tree-kill event, that's the culture you want to work with.  I finally live in a spot where morels come up on my own property, so the race is on to find a way to cultivate them commercially.  If I can pull that off, I'll be a very rich rabbit.

Hmm Interesting Kind of like humands and our production of DMT, we produce more in the dark, something many especially the transeylvanian vampires knew all to well . Very interesting parralel that mushrooms produce more psilocin and we produce more dmt in the dark .

that is opinion and/or improper sterile tek.

Ive used manure and coir and got the same yield from both tubs I did side by side.  I did it with Dancing Tigers and Z strain on 2 seperate occations.

this is the sub mix I used for control:

brick of coir (8qts)
1qt verm

and

8qts manure
1qt verm
(I used 4qts manure and 4qts verm on a seconed test with the same results, equal yields)

both were hydrated with 1gal water then pasteurized then I spawned 6qts rye berries to each batch in an 18gal mono.  colonized and fruited in 22 and 24 days.

both gave me 3 flushes each for a total of 6 1/2 OZ dry each (give or take a couple few grams).

but then I started adding gypsum/coffee grounds/brf/drf  and had no noticable differances in yield or potency (just thicker and more dence) no matter the substrate used. its all in the environment (temps/lights/humidity) in the amounts of substrate used and the surface area given from tubs/trays/cakes will give the mushies what they need to thrive.

coir for me is easier to obtain and work around the house with and will stand up potency wise to any manure grow that you can concocked..

they are both great for cubes and some edibles alike.

I type too slow and every body else beat me to it. :ohwell:

good night, Im through....:getstoned:

Im a little high so my language may be rambling.. not sure which part you couldnt make out.. One thing that I was getting at is that the more complex a substrate and its nutrient profile are, the greater the complexity of enzymes the myc has to produce to break it down and consume the substrates resources (compared to how your body feels when digesting a huge delicious steak in contrast to a bowl of ramen).

Although it is possible to train the myc to pre-construct the necessary enzymes in order to give it a head start in colonizing a particular substrate. An example of this would be adding a very tiny bit of manure to an LC then if you use this LC to innoc. a manure based sub bag it will already "know how" to consume the substrate right away

actually quite the opposite of improper sterile technique young grasshopper. I have more coir blocks sitting in my basement than you will probably ever see lol..  Coir many times is loaded with trich straight from the factory, and while trich is usually easily destroyed at pastuerization, it is NATURALLY prone to the mean green search the forums if you doubt the wisdom. Sometimes you are better off sterilizing it just to be safe.. also H poo have benificial bacteria that help "police" the substrate after pasteurization which helps fight off contamination.. Coir lacks this ability.. its a fact my brother from another mother.. more reading must the young Dr do

I know all that but if the coir is so un-nutritious then how does mold germinate and grow?  oh yeah, same as mushroom spores/myc will.

Ive been reading for years on about everything you can imagine here.  been there done that.  Im not some "young grasshopper" cuz you arent schooling me in anything.

Ive seen the stack of bricks in your basement when you posted the cheap coir bricks thread.  maybe if you kept it covered in a better environment you wouldnt get so much mold on your coir.

we both can grow shrooms just differently.  :santaclaus::peace: :plur: :santaclaus:

@RR Im not downing coir at all as a sub I use it in almost all of my grows.. but I digress your source must be higher quality than mine.. I get a really great deal on bulk quantities but have seriously opened bricks to find trich and have saw posts were others have mentioned it as well.. Im beginning to believe that some suppliers must use a much cheaper method of production.. not all coir is created equal I guess lol.

I too have been dabling with morchella cultivation, whens the last time you dropped in on the "Morel Cultivation Thread"? I have some interesting theories id like to share with ya sometime..
