I myself was very surprised to hear this, as I had always heard of the benefits of light in the p. cubensis life cycle: its role in pinning initiation and the possible beneficial affects of exposing fruitbodies to consistent circadian rhythm light/dark cycles, and some here even believe light is necessary for proper fruit body development.

But according to a recent study published in the reputable International Journal of Medicinal Mushrooms v.11:

ABSTRACT
Indole alkaloids of Psilocybe cubensis have been reported to be the potential candidates for drug discovery in central nervous system (CNS) disorders. In this research, the effect of the harvesting light on increasing the active alkaloids of P. cubensis was investigated. Three different lighting conditions, that is, dim daylight, indirect daylight, and darkness were used to harvest the mushrooms. A simple one-step extraction method involving the homogenization of the dried fruit bodies of fungi in chloroform was used. The psilocin content of the mushrooms was analyzed by derivatization with N-methyl-N-(trimethylsilyl) trifluoroacetamide (MSTFA), followed by the GC-MS technique. This investigation showed that the psilocin content of the mushrooms was highly dependent on the lighting conditions. Variations could amount to 100-fold increases in the samples harvested in the dark condition, compared to the samples harvested in the light conditions. Therefore, preventing natural light in the harvesting chamber could be considered to have a considerable effect on the content of the psychotropic component of P. cubensis and, hence, the psycho activity of the mushroom.

I find this very interesting that natural light would make such a large difference in the alkaloid content, but this is a very reputable source and the study was done this year so I would presume it is quite accurate.

Any thoughts/theorise/reactions on these finding? Would love to here what you all have to say about this. If true it is a VERY big deal!

Hmm, 100 times 1% by weight would be... If they're only testing for psilocin it's not exactly conclusive.  Have you by chance read the whole $35 article?  Details, details?

Interesting, and easy enough to try, though you'd think this is so simple it would already be common knowledge. :eek:

If you were going to do that anyway (and I see myself trying this soon!) I'd also try various wavelengths for illumination - blue, red, green.  Try different illumination schemes (ps. cubensis is phototropic and SFAIK requires some light in order to pin).  Find out what the minimum light for pinning is and what frequency is required.  Learn to harvest fruits just by touch.  There may be a level that sets pins and allows growth but maximizes potency, yet a human can still see by.

I also assume from the abstract that the fruits were dried in darkness before assaying.  It's fascinating stuff.

ooo, man I'd like to read that article. From the abstract is sounds like they only harvested in darkness. Surely it must have been dark for the fruiting stage? Or would that lead to more aborts? Also, does this suggest that the eventual psilocin content is determined mainly during the fruiting process, and mainly by light?!

It makes me think of what Jeremy Narby was saying in The Cosmic Serpent about the sentience of nature (i.e. mushrooms, plants etc as intelligent beings) as being an effect of DNA communicating through high-frequency, low-strength radiation of photons (emitted directly from the DNA in all life). Maybe an environment with too many photons of the visible wavelength somehow impedes the production of alkaloids designed to reveal these non-visible wavelengths that are the mind of nature. In other words, leave them out of the light, and the mushrooms will develop to help us to see what light cannot reveal... Makes sense, in a way.

There have been members here who have grown there monotubs in darkness and havent said anything about the potency being 100x stronger, and thats something you would tell evreyone.

Great find. Ive noticed when I use bright light I get better pinsets and more mushrooms. When I dont use light I get fewer mushrooms but they tend to be stronger. I wasent sure if I was just imagining it because there no way to measure potency without lab equipment.
We need some people to try this out. I cant imagine penis envy with an increase in potency. You can have less shrooms but stronger shrooms or you can have more shrooms but weaker shrooms. Sounds like you break even either way.
