I disagree.  Being a senior in college, I have recently realized that there is a minimum salary that I have to make per year in order for my girlfriend to stay with me for life.

Respectfully disagree with this. I, too am a senior in college. For the first 3 years, I wanted to be a doctor. Not only were they able to help others with their knowledge and skills, but they made a great living. And who doesn't want that?

Though as I began to take more philosophy classes and focus less on the money, I came to realize that money is not real. Thus, I can decide how much value I place on it. To make a long story short, I am going to be an inner city high school science teacher. That is how I will help people. No, I won't make a ton of money, but yes, I will be happy. And my girlfriend? She's the bomb. She's with me even if i'm broke. That is the kind of girl (or guy, if that's your bag) that you WANT to keep around.

Money is just so... empty.

Money is no more "empty" then anything else. It represents your life energy and its up to you how you use it.

What I meant by that statement is simply that money is useless until you decide to spend it. It is paper... given meaning by the current state of the economy. I suppose nearly everything is somewhat like this, in the sense that what is meaningful to one may be meaningless to another. But to spend one's life in the pursuit of money? To me, that is taking away from the beauty of life itself.

Icelander, could you elaborate how you arrived at the conclusion that money represents one's life energy?

How is the energy-being that makes up who I am somehow contained in the amount of money that I possess?

I agree the pusuit of money can get way out of balance.

OK, you go to work and doing that work takes up time and energy, and in exchange for giving that you get cash that you can exchange for, lets say, food or shelter. Now without that cash you would have to grow or hunt that food and build that shelter which also takes energy.

Life energy ? No. If I am robbed I would be dead then ?
Maybe for some people or some situations it's true. Better to avoid those.
To OP, it's silly to think women want men to do what they expect of them. How boring would that be. Who still has balls here ?
But it's true that in general women are more in danger of being affected and influenced by all this luxury-richness thingy, as they know that 'beauty' attracts men kind. So it's man's decision how far he will let himself be blinded by this and how far he let himself inside that game.

Women want diamonds because we are told that we want diamonds.

Me, I never liked'em.  And I like'em even less since I understand where they come from and how.

I have been de-brainwashing myself every day since ... I started smoking pot, eating mushrooms, and realizing I was brainwashed.  Years ago.

De-brainwashing doesn't happen by accident.

Are we slaves because we're addicted to luxury?  I think that we're slaves because we live in an economic system that enslaves.  And we're too comfortable to complain.  I don't think it's women enslaving men because they want diamonds.

If you need to be rich to keep your girlfriend, and you don't care about being rich otherwise, do you have the right girlfriend?

As a girl, I can tell you:  not all females care about material wealth.  I never have.  Maybe that's why I'm always broke!

But society gives us all this pressure, girls have to go to the spa all the time and find a guy who buys diamonds, and guys... have to jack off and watch porn.

Just kidding.

Anyway I'd definitely say it's feudal economics, and probably capitalism enslaving us, "property" enslaving us, and ... I suppose gender equality issues too, but ... in a different sense.

Yes I don't know how we as a gender would manage this without the immense social pressure that compels us to.

I hate our society. I should be about loving people NOT materials.

Diamonds are nice, but I want my husband to give me something more meaningful. Just being with him forever is enough.

People say that what we're all seeking is a meaning for life. I don't
think that's what we're really seeking. I think what we're seeking is an
experience of being alive, so that our life experiences on the purely
physical plane will have resonances within our own innermost being and
reality, so we can actually feel the rapture of being alive.:flowerchild:

Okay then having a soul mate is amazing. I'm not as close to my friends, or family as my significant other.

I have had many "soul mates" over 56 years.

Now I have friends. Romantic love is an addiction IMO and never lasts too long. However real friendship has great potential.

so that's why I'd like to hear from you in five years.

So are you saying that your significant other is your best friend, and there's no differences between her and your male friends?

Right. We have sex but outside of that the love I share with the people I really care about is the same.
