Addiction to luxury leading to enslavement of society.
    #11168356 -

The more luxury we want, the more we need to work. But as TV's are getting bigger and bigger, we will have to work more and more.

The problem here is; men's behavior decides society, but women decide men's behavior. A diamond being a girls best friend leads to men having no choice but to become rich by any means, even if it means going to africa to enslave the black people to make them dig diamonds.

We men are nothing but peons on the chessfield. The only thing we want is women, therefore, we have no choice but to obey their commands. What women want decides society. So we are basically being enslaved by our own counter-parts.

I don't think anybody decides to try to make it big souly for the reason that they need to buy a ring in order to get a woman. (revised in next post)

Giving a woman a ring is a symbolic act of your dedication.  You do not need to be rich, it's like the bible story where a poor woman donates one penny, and richer people judge her donation, but jesus says something along the lines of that one penny was all she had.  I'm obviously taking liberties with this story, but the idea is that acts of dedication are relative to your means, and a woman can understand that.  You do not need to be rich to find a woman.

Your concept of men control society but woman control men isn't entirely accurate, we both influence the world in our own way, neither of us being truly in command.

I'de like to add that we seek to obtain what we value, if we seek to obtain the kind of woman that comes with being rich, than we will seek to become rich and find that woman.  Everybody has different values.

I disagree.  Being a senior in college, I have recently realized that there is a minimum salary that I have to make per year in order for my girlfriend to stay with me for life.  I agree with Diaboleros, we are the victims of natural selection at work.  Hell, we use evolutionary thinking to explain why male peacocks have such an extravagant and fruity display of feathers.  Male peacocks can't fight with their feathers; they can't use them to obtain food or shelter.  Why would a peacock waste energy on growing colorful and symmetrical feathers?

The answer:  chicks dig it.  The best females have chosen to be attracted to peacocks with the most beautiful display of feathers.  If a male wants to reproduce, he has no choice but to go along with the female's expectations of what is a suitable mate.

Mother nature is a bitch.

Women just want to feel special and know that they are being taken care of.
A diamond is purely symbolic of wealth. Women want diamonds because they are expensive and last forever.

People want luxury because is makes them feel like they are royal, or more valuable than other people.

You can attain that through genuine means, such as being proud of what you do and having friends who appreciate you and make sure you are not left behind. But most people are just plain old joes and cannot hope to acheive much more with their lives than to count dollars in the hopes that they will have more than their neighbor.

most 'luxuries' people desitre these days are PURELY symbolic. People spend their money in ways that provide them with symbols of the upper class. All people want is to feel like their life is 'good' or 'worthy', and so they buy things that symbolise success.

Remember, capitalist consumerist society is an invention of wealthy people, and in order to make it work, they needed to make people believe that they need to earn money, and thus work. In order to convince people they need money, you need to make them believe that the things you are selling them are actually worth something.

Well most things for sale are pointless and debilitating. But people need to buy them, so a hell of a lot of effort is put into making things desirable.

This is done by turning products and services into SYMBOLS of desirability.

You don't have to fall for it though.

Stop buying stupid shit and instead save up for your own home or something really useful that will allow you to provide for a family.

Some but not all women are materialistic, I think its a result of rich fathers spoiling them, but that would just be my guess.  My GF couldn't be farther from that though.  If you don't want to perpetuate bullshit materialism, find a girl who doesn't care about money (do your part in evolutionary selection).  They are out there, and will make children like themselves.

This is the way we evolved. The sanskrit word for the cosmic female energy, shakti, translates to "Power". Shiva, the cosmic male energy, translates to "graciousness"... roughly.  In modern society, the struggle for equality, even between genders, has lead to numerous problems since males are generally more physically powerful than females.

Leadership capability, no?
Our technological evolution has outpaced our biological evolution. Greed for currency has lead to a diversion of the natural drive for males to care for and pamper females.  This is leading to the enslavement of society. We're diverging from the main point here.  This is not about women controlling men's behavior, but about enslavement of society... artificially inflated value of diamonds, sweat shops to mass-produce inferior clothing and accessories, so on and so forth. What is the solution? You tell me.

The whole industry of selling diamonds is a ridiculous concoction by a worldwide diamond cartel. The demand and desire to have them was created by a greedy marketeer called De Beers, if I recall in the early 1900s some time. Humans can make diamond synthetically for real cheap, but still the demand for the "real deal" which has remained controlled by the industry, persists. The reality is that it is not women controlling men but Rich Industrialists controlling both through advertising. It's a "brave new world" we find ourselves in.

Respectfully disagree with this. I, too am a senior in college. For the first 3 years, I wanted to be a doctor. Not only were they able to help others with their knowledge and skills, but they made a great living. And who doesn't want that?

Though as I began to take more philosophy classes and focus less on the money, I came to realize that money is not real. Thus, I can decide how much value I place on it. To make a long story short, I am going to be an inner city high school science teacher. That is how I will help people. No, I won't make a ton of money, but yes, I will be happy. And my girlfriend? She's the bomb. She's with me even if i'm broke. That is the kind of girl (or guy, if that's your bag) that you WANT to keep around.

Money is just so... empty.

What I meant by that statement is simply that money is useless until you decide to spend it. It is paper... given meaning by the current state of the economy. I suppose nearly everything is somewhat like this, in the sense that what is meaningful to one may be meaningless to another. But to spend one's life in the pursuit of money? To me, that is taking away from the beauty of life itself.

Icelander, could you elaborate how you arrived at the conclusion that money represents one's life energy?

How is the energy-being that makes up who I am somehow contained in the amount of money that I possess?

I agree the pusuit of money can get way out of balance.

OK, you go to work and doing that work takes up time and energy, and in exchange for giving that you get cash that you can exchange for, lets say, food or shelter. Now without that cash you would have to grow or hunt that food and build that shelter which also takes energy.

Life energy ? No. If I am robbed I would be dead then ?
Maybe for some people or some situations it's true. Better to avoid those.
To OP, it's silly to think women want men to do what they expect of them. How boring would that be. Who still has balls here ?
But it's true that in general women are more in danger of being affected and influenced by all this luxury-richness thingy, as they know that 'beauty' attracts men kind. So it's man's decision how far he will let himself be blinded by this and how far he let himself inside that game.

Women want diamonds because we are told that we want diamonds.

Me, I never liked'em.  And I like'em even less since I understand where they come from and how.

I have been de-brainwashing myself every day since ... I started smoking pot, eating mushrooms, and realizing I was brainwashed.  Years ago.

De-brainwashing doesn't happen by accident.

Are we slaves because we're addicted to luxury?  I think that we're slaves because we live in an economic system that enslaves.  And we're too comfortable to complain.  I don't think it's women enslaving men because they want diamonds.

If you need to be rich to keep your girlfriend, and you don't care about being rich otherwise, do you have the right girlfriend?

As a girl, I can tell you:  not all females care about material wealth.  I never have.  Maybe that's why I'm always broke!

But society gives us all this pressure, girls have to go to the spa all the time and find a guy who buys diamonds, and guys... have to jack off and watch porn.

Just kidding.

Anyway I'd definitely say it's feudal economics, and probably capitalism enslaving us, "property" enslaving us, and ... I suppose gender equality issues too, but ... in a different sense.

That's true and a good observation. However painful to accept. It's not about us, this personality structure an emergent quality of an evolved brain. It's about something so vast we will never understand it. And it doesn't care as far as I can tell.

Yea it does suck. I try to get the fullest out of what I have now. Hopefully I will leave a lasting impact on others, so they can remember me. That's the best I could do.

People say that what we're all seeking is a meaning for life. I don't
think that's what we're really seeking. I think what we're seeking is an
experience of being alive, so that our life experiences on the purely

reality, so we can actually feel the rapture of being alive.:flowerchild:

This is a pipe dream dearest. You will be totally forgotten as will everyone you care about. You are unimportant and so is any meaningless thing you might accomplish.

At least someone will remember me for a short amount of time which still makes me feel better. No one ever forgets about George Washington though..

Yes GW will be totally forgotten in a very short time.

Here's a good question for you. Why does being remembered after death make you feel better?

Knowing I would have made an impact on someone, and I wasn't a failure at life. I guess it's just something I want to accomplish. Not that I will remember it, so I guess it really doesn't matter.

Why would someone remembering you mitigate your personal feelings of being a failure? I really doubt that would help much.

All your self esteem in this life will be generated from within no matter what we are told.

Personaly I like to remember, my past. It is kinda foolish to compare yourself to superman. Real heroes from history though, have interesting "flaws" that made them who they were.

--------------------
"Have you ever seen what happens when a grenade goes off in a school? Do you really know what you’re doing when you order shock and awe? Are you prepared to kneel beside a dying soldier and tell him why he went to Iraq, or why he went to any war?"
"The things that are done in the name of the shareholder are, to me, as terrifying as the things that are done—dare I say it—in the name of God. Montesquieu said, "There have never been so many civil wars as in the Kingdom of God." And I begin to feel that’s true. The shareholder is the excuse for everything."
