Insurance of any kind is never the best way to ensure the most return for the dollar.  Duh.

nope.....

The Congressional Budget Office issued a report concluding, from a partial draft of a Senate health committee bill, that the plan would cost $1 trillion over 10 years but only provide coverage for 16 million of the estimated 50 million Americans who are uninsured

What? That's... pretty boring. Hardly the universal healthcare scheme that I've been hearing about. They're going to increase health spending by, what, 4 percent? And the percentage of people who are covered by health insurance will increase by 4.8%. Wow.

You're accusing the Census Bureau of falsifying data for political means? That's a pretty serious accusation. As you said to me in another thread, substantiate it or retract it.

Anybody who doesn't have health insurance because they can't afford it is covered by Medicare/Medicaid.  I repeat, the truly needy are already covered.

You have no fucking idea what you are talking about regarding the US health care and you prove it over and over again.

Open mouth, insert foot.

http://www.cms.hhs.gov/MedicaidGenInfo/
Quote:
Medicaid does not provide medical assistance for all poor persons. Even under the broadest provisions of the Federal statute (except for emergency services for certain persons), the Medicaid program does not provide health care services, even for very poor persons, unless they are in one of the designated eligibility groups.

Maybe that's because they aren't truly needy.  It is against the law for a hospital to deny care and there are expectations that people will pay eventually.  From your link:
Quote:
Many groups of people are covered by Medicaid. Even within these groups, though, certain requirements must be met. These may include your age, whether you are pregnant, disabled, blind, or aged; your income and resources (like bank accounts, real property, or other items that can be sold for cash); and whether you are a U.S. citizen or a lawfully admitted immigrant. The rules for counting your income and resources vary from state to state and from group to group. There are special rules for those who live in nursing homes and for disabled children living at home.

Your child may be eligible for coverage if he or she is a U.S. citizen or a lawfully admitted immigrant, even if you are not (however, there is a 5-year limit that applies to lawful permanent residents). Eligibility for children is based on the child's status, not the parent's. Also, if someone else's child lives with you, the child may be eligible even if you are not because your income and resources will not count for the child.

In general, you should apply for Medicaid if your income is low and you match one of the descriptions of the Eligibility Groups.  (Even if you are not sure whether you qualify, if you or someone in your family needs health care, you should apply for Medicaid and have a qualified caseworker in your state evaluate your situation.)

Let's see.  You are a young male college student with no income who decides to go rock climbing.  You fall and break your leg.  I goddamn well hope I aint paying your fucking bill.  Partial information is worse than none at all.

Both the percentage and number of people without health insurance decreased in 2007. The percentage without health insurance was 15.3 percent in 2007, down from 15.8 percent in 2006, and the number of uninsured was 45.7 million, down from 47.0 million (Table 6)

Quote:
Economic Status
The proportion of people not covered by health insurance is lower among people with higher income. In 2007, 24.5 percent of people in households with annual incomes of less than $25,000 had no health insurance coverage. Uninsured rates decreased for each consecutive household income group to 21.1 percent for households with incomes of $25,000 to $49,999, 14.5 percent for households with incomes of $50,000 to $74,999, and 7.8 percent for households with incomes of $75,000 or more. Among the four household income groups in Table 6, the uninsured rate was not statistically different in 2007 from 2006 in the lower three groups. The uninsured rate fell for people in households in the highest income group to 7.8 percent in 2007, from 8.5 percent in 2006.

"I repeat, the truly needy are already covered." - except for those 45.7 million people who aren't.

Why do you assume that the people without insurance are needy?  From your link:

Quote:
The number of people with health
insurance increased to 253.4 mil-
lion in 2007 (up from 249.8 million
in 2006). The number of people
covered by private health insur-
ance (202.0 million) in 2007 was
not statistically different from
2006, while the number of people
covered by government health
insurance increased to 83.0 mil-
lion, up from 80.3 million in 2006.

83 million people covered by government health insurance already.  That's almost twice the number that don't have insurance.  Why do you continually assume that the people who don't have it don't have because they can't afford it?  A lot of them don't have it because they don't want to pay for it.  Probably most.  Of course, if the government forces me to pay for their health insurance they'd be happy as pigs in shit.

If that student was covered by the same private insurer as you, you'd be paying anyway. That's just the way insurance works, regardless of if the insurer is owned by the government. Yours is an argument against insuring young people.
Besides, since college students usually have a higher salary upon graduation, he'd be paying higher taxes. I don't see why someone should be uninsured just because he's chosen to study to improve his career prospects. If the same student got sick with tetanus from a rusty fence by accident, would you also wish that he wasn't insured?

I'd say some, not most. How do you explain the fact that the uninsured rate is higher at the bottom end of the socio-economic scale? Do you really think that all those poor people don't have insurance because they just don't want it? Come on. My explanation makes far more sense. They don't have insurance because they can't afford it and they aren't covered by Medicaid because Medicaid isn't designed to cover everyone.

FALSE.  He would have a bill that he can pay from future earnings.  INSURANCE IS NOT CARE.  He owes money.  He needs to pay it.  Think of it as a mortgage he signed for when he fucked up.

Well, let's see.  You don't have much money and you choose to spend it elsewhere.  How about the Wilkersons:
Quote:
On the conference call, Dara admitted to me that she and Brian had been talking about having children since before they were married. She further admitted that after they were married she voluntarily left a job at a country club that had good health insurance, because the situation was “unmanageable.” From there she took a job at a restaurant with no health insurance, and the couple went on to have a baby anyway, presuming that others would pay for it and certainly long before they knew their daughter would have heart defect that probably cost the gross national product of Burkina Faso to fix. But not knowing about future health problems is the reason we have insurance in the first place.

Now, pause for a second. Are you reading this at your computer at work, in a job that you don’t particularly care for or even downright detest because you have a spouse and child that depend on you? You wouldn’t be the first or last person to make that choice.

For Dara and Brian Wilkerson, the fact that they don’t have health insurance is less about falling through the cracks than the decisions they’ve made. We know that Dara is at least capable of getting a job with insurance — so why does she not have one now?

There's also the Frost family there.  Easily able to afford insurance but spend it elsewhere.  And I should pay for these fuckholes?

It's a perfectly valid concept, but again, this is an argument against all insurance. It has nothing to do with private vs. public insurance. All I'm saying is that if you think that health insurance is a good idea (which most people do), then public insurance is a better deal.

No it is not.  It is an argument about personal choice and the dignity of risk.  And for all the highfalutin arguments about reforming health care being about cost cutting the NY Times has a piece today revealing once and for all that it is nothing other than wealth redistribution and class warfare:
Quote:
WASHINGTON — House Democrats will ask the wealthiest Americans to help pay for overhauling the health care system with a $550 billion income tax increase, the chairman of the tax-writing Ways and Means Committee said Friday.

The proposal calls for a surtax on individuals earning at least $280,000 in adjusted gross income and couples earning more than $350,000, said the chairman, Representative Charles B. Rangel of New York.

It would generate about $550 billion over 10 years to pay about half the cost of the legislation, Mr. Rangel said. As the proposal envisions it, the rest of the cost would be covered by lower spending on Medicare, the government health plan for the elderly, and other health care savings.

There were about 80M returns filed for 2008.  The income levels discussed represent around 2% of that number.  That means that 1.6M personal income tax paying entities will be forced to pay, on average, $35,000 each per annum.  On top of the fact that we already pay most of the taxes as it is.

Dude, all forms of income tax are wealth redistribution and class warfare. Are you really surprised that rich people pay more, to the benefit of poor people? That's been going on for at least a century.

No, it isn't all about wealth redistribution.  An equal percentage for everyone wouldn't be.  It's all about the degree of progression and as bad as it is now they want to fuck us even more.  It's a disgrace.

I get my health insurance tax free and i don't even work for a company. They allow you to deduct the whole amount if you are self employed. Now zappa is mad at me too.

the main way they are going to pay for all these handout programs is with the inflation tax. The true value of the dollar drops dramatically and all those iou's become wastepaper. People with money are right now scurrying to find a safe haven from inflation. Gold anyone?

I do it too.  But people who don't itemize deductions can't.  It isn't always good to itemize deductions.  I'd like to see them all go, with the exception of interest on primary dwellings.  I'd like to see that go as well but too many people are tied into too many years of financial decisions that it would be be ruinous.  To combat that unfairness I would make rent deductible.  Renters have been getting fucked for far too long.

I hate to be nit picky but i don't itemize and i still get to deduct the health insurance. I agree itemizing is a racket. All expenses should be deductible including drugs, gambing, etc. Just make inflation 20% a year to pay for it. That part they are working on. Cash use to be king, not any more. Say hello to the bollivar or mexican peso as our next currency. Make your own currency backed by 1 oz of copper. People will be trading dollars for your new dollar.

"House Democrats will not unveil their full healthcare reform package on Friday nor begin committee work on the bill next week as planned, the latest sign that President Obama’s signature domestic initiative is in trouble."

" I think to negotiate in public when there are many different options is not going to be very helpful, so I’m not going to do that,”    Chuck Schumer

"this is a make or break issue for President Obama." Henry Waxman

"If it's not done quickly, it won't be done at all." Barack Obama

The delay caps off a rocky week for Democrats and puts Obama’s goal of having both chambers pass a bill by the August recess increasingly at risk.

In spite of the disorder among congressional Democrats, Obama said his goals and timeline remain doable.

“There are going to be some tough negotiations in the days and weeks to come, but I'm confident that we're going to get it done,”

I think he loses both.  Especially cap and tax the living shit out of all carbon based life forms.  There is no way he can sell that shit after Chindia told him to suck a dick.  The healthcare horror is much easier since he is going to tax only about 2% of the population to pay for it and the idiot proles think free means at no cost.  I can't wait to see all the fatties on the program doing jumping jacks in the New Tienanmen Square in San Francisco.  Well, never mind, I can do without seeing that.  Can you imagine San Fran Nan and the collagen that would fall out of her face?  Somebody get a mop.  I'm not doing it.
