Re: The Sick US Healthcare System [Re: zappaisgod]

I pay taxes, too :smirk:

We all pay for a service which we all use, where's the problem?

I'm glad you did well. Not all do. What's the wait for a hip replacement?

Probably at least a month. When is the last time someone died because of a bad hip?

Now THIS I can respect. No bullshit "it's good for the people" or "it will do this or that for the little people" or anything of the kind. Just flat out self interest, fuck everybody else. Given that you have expressed some expectation that you will soon be a wealthy shyster, I don't quite know why you would take this tack, but hey, your interests are.....whatever YOU say they are. No matter how stupid I or anyone else thinks you are being in trying to achieve them.

I can, however, without shame point out that that is exactly what Trendal is, a shamelessly self interested. Although he probably thinks he's the people's champion, he is actually the people's burden.

My seeming altruism stems from my belief that the whole pretty good system will turn into the VA system if the government runs it. Pay attention. What did I say about denial of service under government? See English smokers. What did I say about suing the government? Oh yeah, baby, specialize in that.

Hip replacement wait is several months I read. See how you like it if you have to wait. Look, I don't give a shit about the Canadian health care system. I just don't want it here. Somebody said the costs were transparent. The fuck they are

Its weird how noone on the site uses statistics.

This is a great paper interpreting a World Health Organization study of all industrialized nations in 1999-2000.
http://dll.umaine.edu/ble/U.S.%20HCweb.pdf

It basically says how bad our health care is, and also very expensive. The US ranked 37th in health performance while paying the most per capita, twice that of Switzerland the 2nd place. Definitely worth reading. Black babies have twice as high mortality rates as whites. Our infant mortality is the highest of all modern nations. Read this paper and skip the movie.

Also public support is overwhelming on the side of universal health care. And in a Democracy I like to think public opinion matters.
http://www.pollingreport.com/health3.htm

The US and South Africa are the only industrialized countries that don't provide health care for all citizens.

I think Michal Moore is annoying, but after hearing him talk to the California Congress about how bad the health care system is I am going to see his movie. I don't have much experience with it personally but it sounds fucked. Especially not having free insurance for children, come on at least the kids, how does free market capitalism work for infants, it dosn't thats why blacks have something like 15/1,000 infant mortality rate.

Believe me, I don't support socialized health care. I just like arguing with you. It stimulates the brain.

Your statement is unscientific.

I think a second discomfort with the biological approach to the human mind is the worry that it somehow makes our ideals a sham or less real. Life would be a Potemkin Village, where there's only a facade of value and worth, but really biology is showing that there's nothing behind the facade. For example, if we love our children because the genes for loving children are in the bodies of those children and so the genes are benefiting themselves, doesn't that undermine the purity or the value of that love? If our ethical ideals, our sense of justice and fairness, were selected for because it did our ancestors good in the long run, would that imply that there's no such thing as altruism or justice, that deep down we're really selfish?

I think that this reaction is based on a misreading of Richard's metaphor of the selfish gene. It's not because of what Richard actually said in his book The Selfish Gene, which is crystal clear. But here's how it could be misread: the theory says that one can make powerful predictions about the process of natural selection by imagining that the gene has a selfish motive to make copies of itself. Of course no one ever thought that a gene has real motives in the sense that people have motives, but it this is a valuable way to gain insight about the subtleties of natural selection, especially when it comes to social interactions, and it leads to many correct predictions.

Here is the distortion. People think that genes are our deepest hidden self, our essence, so if our genes are selfish, that means that deep down we're selfish. It's an unholy hybrid of Freud's idea of unconscious motivation and the straightforward modern theory of the natural selection of replicators. Now, I think I'm safe to say that it was not intended by Richard, and it doesn't follow from the logic of the theory. The metaphorical motives of the genes are not somehow a more fundamental or honest version of the real motives of the entire person. Indeed, sometimes the most "selfish" thing a gene can do, in this metaphorical sense of selfish, is to build a brain that is not selfish -- not selfish at an unconscious level, not selfish at any level -- even if the genes are themselves metaphorically selfish. When we love our children we aren't at any level of the brain calculating that it will increase our inclusive fitness. The love can be pure and in and of itself in terms of what's actually happening in the brain. The selfishness of genes explains why we have that pure emotion.

Steven Pinker- Department of Psychology, Harvard University.

The fact is we are the product of our genes, and our genes, in their selfish pursuit, have wired us with selfless instincts via pure emotion.

I hate PDFs, you can't cut and paste. Anyway, I will type out the criteria they used (fucking pain in the ass)
Quote:
1) Good Health "making the health status of the entire population as good as possible" across the whole life cycle.

This one is OK although I think not the unmitigated positive that it seems at first blush. "The greatest good for the greatest number" seems laudatory but it inevitably precludes the exceptional. Resources allocated only for the most common of maladies most easily handled with those less common or more difficult afflictions shoved to the wayside. And who decides? Why politicians and bureaucrats. I shudder, see England and smokers.

Quote:
2)"responsiveness" responding to people's expectations of respectful treatment and client orientation by health care providers.

This strikes me as just odd. If the population has diminished expectations the health care system would score higher. Now I know limeys have a perverse love of a queue but us Yanks not so much. We also complain more. Does that really have any reflection on the objective measurement of a health care system? I think not.

Quote:
3)"fairness in financing" ensuring financial protection for everyone, with costs distributed according to one's ability to pay.

Again, this is not any measure of quality of care, it is strictly a measure of how "socialized" a system is. It measures only to what extent a health system is an active re-distributor of wealth. Two of the three criteria for ranking health care systems have zero to do with the care and one of them "by definition" puts the US at the bottom. One has to do with perception and the other has to do strictly with how much benefit inequity there is (If you have the highest need you have the least responsibility to pay for your care. That is inequitable).

More on the first one, a maelstrom of socialist fallacy if I ever saw one. It is, as a desired end in a finite system, a complete and utter defeat for any kind of exceptionalism. With zero reward for innovation and daring there will be none and any medical advances will be retarded. It is only in devoting research resources daringly that real advancements can be made. When the criteria for success becomes the average, that's what you will get.

Anyway, all of that is merely to clear up what that WHO study says as opposed to what the authors of this paper say it says. And who are the authors of that pdf Op Ed? Oddly, it doesn't say, other than the Univ. of Maine, Bureau of Labor Education. Acknowledgments are interesting too. "Physicians for a National Health Plan". It's a position paper by socialists, which is fine, just don't present it as anything else

The Democracy issue you raise is very troubling. What's that quote? "When the voters realize they can vote themselves endless benefits from the public till a Democracy will collapse." There's also probably a whole host of reasons why black babies have a higher mortality rate.

I have no doubt that there are intelligent, well meaning people who think socialized medicine is a good idea. I think it's a horror show about to happen in England and elsewhere that I'd rather not start here. For the reasons I have elucidated.

If you want to see Moore's fallacy, I think you can get it free off the net.

Just because the brain is supposedly wired to make selfless decision sometimes (raising our own children) does not mean the brain makes selfless beliefs and emotions in all instances. What makes you believe that this is a situation dictated by selfless ideas?

Also, that whole section you quoted seems like a assertion or hypothesis. Nowhere in it is there any evidence for what he says.
