It's a more interesting question whether or not to have children; is it moral to create a new life knowing full well they are being born with an inevitable death sentence?

Which would be more moral - a late term abortion or having the poor child being born with an inevitable death sentence?

Re: "Give me Immortality or give me Death" [Re: deCypher]

I've come to find a nice comfort with death, or so I like to imagine. Death will be the only release from this push and pull, ebb and flow. The only release from all worry, desire, pain, fear, and every other part of life. It doesn't sound that bad to me.

I have made an effort to look forward to it rather than fear it around every corner. The fear is still there of course, but nowadays it's usually followed with a "So?".

It is the only finality I know of, and though I am unaware of whether it is yet another duality of human nature, sometimes I yearn for it as much as I do to live. Sometimes.

To answer your question, deCypher, would I not have to ask myself --being currently in such a  situation that is living-- whether I think it was worth being born? Stuck between wishing to live and waiting to die I could not tell you; I would not know (anything.) of happiness or love without being alive, and on the other end of the spectrum I would not have to suffer from fear and pain. Stuck indecisively in the middle, is this yet another duality?

The aborted fetus will probably experience less total pain and suffering than if it was allowed to grow up, no?

You or I can't possibly know that.

Besides it's not about avoiding pain or an individual hoping to avoid death.  It's about REPRODUCING and perpetuating the species.  That is your biological function whether you like it or not.

Immortality would really suck if you had immortal chronic pain.  We are designed to wear out and be replaced with a new machine.

I understand we naturally have instincts to survive and reproduce, but I'm questioning whether or not these instincts are in fact a morally good thing.

If you are really looking for an answer, then here it is: Morality is subjective.

Though I would agree, the life of a fetus does not sound entirely unpleasant. Living in warm fluid, within a large throbbing, vibrating organism. And then, before you are subjected to all the shit this life has to offer, you leave.

Though I must admit, I am disappointed my earlier post did not recieve a response, as I did answer already. Ask yourself, was it worth being born? This is what you are asking.

And yet we all still can agree on an intersubjective definition of what is good: usually anything that increases suffering is considered bad, for instance.

Actually I feel this is a different question.  I am already alive, so I might as well continue my existence for as long as I can; I can't go back and choose not to have been born.  I can, however, choose whether or not to bring new life into the world.

A finite life ain't worth living?

I am going to have to go with this...

This is true, what is a life worth living when it is finite? Well, it really isn't. But who the fuck cares? Let's get high dude

yes, it's about clearing up the uncertainty. At the moment, we have both.

I prefer to live better than to be dead even when my life is(/would be) miserable because else I wouldn't have the ability to CHANGE something about that...
And if my life is good, why should I would like it to end...

Nevertheless, as everyone struggles with something, I appreciate the silence of death as well...

Immortality only would be able to exist within an altered consciousness, which requires and altered mind and a more evolved brain maybe.

Lately I've been mulling this over some.  I think life is ultimately just as worthless as death, but since we're already alive we might as well make the most of it... death is an unknown evil compared to the known evil of life.

It's a more interesting question whether or not to have children; is it moral to create a new life knowing full well they are being born with an inevitable death sentence?

Morality is meaningless to me. Ethically however I can't think of a reason to have offspring other than selfish ones.

You might not be bad at raising off spring...just think of them as dogs and you would do better than most by far and away...however I do not blame you for not reproducing. It is a lot of trouble in hindsight.

I prefer the phrase 'Give me freedom, or give me death'. Its a little more realistic an inspiration.

Unless you believe all sorts of irrational nonsense about an afterlife.

I'm guessing most people here don't.
