alcohol or cigarettes?
    #8575002 -

bored and thinking. i smoke cigarettes and barely drink often. But I wanted to see what the pub thinks about the damage. By living with my father which is a true alcoholic and by the damage it has done to his mind. I wanted to see what your opinion on which does more harm to the body.. Id most likely say alcohol just because cigs harm the mind less in my opinion..
Alcohol or cigarettes?

definitely cigs, cigs (if you inhale, which most people do) fuck your lungs all up. alcohol might fuck your liver up, but you'd have to abuse the shit for a long time, more so than cigs, relatively.

if  you look at it anthropologically humans were designed to cope with alcohol more so than they were to handle carcinogenic smoke in their lungs.

Being a chain smoker is not nearly as bad as being an alcoholic and I only say  this because chain smokers usually only hurt themselves. . . . more people die from drunk driving accidents than they do from second-hand smoke. . . babies born from a mother who smokes are lucky not to come out fucked up vs. babies who come from a mother who drinks are lucky to come out alive at all!

speak for yourself, injuns been using tobacco for 8000+ years,
about the same length of time everyone else had alcohol, John
Wayne lived 72 years and smoked 6 packs per day, liver cancer
killed him although he did have lung cancer that most
contributed to radiation, Jackie Gleason lived 71 years, also
smoked 6 packs per day he died from liver/colon cancer

Gleason had no signs of lung cancer or any other respiratory
issues due to cigarettes

Alcohol, definitely. Cigs may kill me, but frankly, I feel endangered every time I get black out drunk. Last night I almost got in a fight and I almost got arrested, none of which I remember

well, if you look at it comparatively cigarettes definitely do more damage.

indians didn't use a pack a day and they surely didn't inhale their tobacco, you did notice that i said inhale right? further, indians used tobacco only in ceremonies or for relaxation/socializing.

I think you dont know indian culture as well as you want to
believe, there were many regular smokers, it wasnt just social,
tobacco is much more than a sacrament to the indian people

"The great Glooskap was a right valiant smoker; in all the world was no man who loved a pipe of good tobacco so much as he. In those days the summers were longer in the land of the Wabanaki, the sun was warmer, and the Indians raised tomawe (tobacco, P.), and solaced themselves mightily therewith."

comparatively, how may death are there each year from smoking
way too many cigarettes as opposed to drinking too much, it's
the marijuana argument with tobacco

well, that falls under the relaxation part doesn't it?

as for the tobacco vs. alcohol, many alcohol deaths are probably result of drinking too much and getting run over or some dumb shit.

if you were to take a moderate alcohol drinker and a moderate tobacco smoker i'd wager that the tobacco smoker would be in worse health quicker and die quicker. the effects on tobacco smoke on the lungs are worse than the effects of alcohol on the body in my opinion.

If both are used moderately then I believe tobacco would be the worse thing for you.

Alcohol inebriates you while tobacco doesn't so you can't compare them on that level. People don't do stupid shit "under the influence" of tobacco. People on alcohol do.

If asked which does the most damage cognitively then it would of course be alcohol. It causes bad judgement and ability to think overall.

If asked which is worse for your body in general and in a chemical/pharmalogical stand point it would be tobacco. When drinking your body only has to deal with the alcohol but with tobacco its a cocktail of poisons and carcinogens.

Your liver is partly mad to take a beating, it cleans your blood so its used to doing its job as long as you don't constantly barrage it.

Your lungs however are very vulnerable organs. They supply the oxygen you need to simply function at any level. they do a good job at dealing with the normal levels of allergens and toxins. They are NOT good at constantly trying to heal themselves are they are constantly re-injured.

just my 2c.

yeah, good job clearing that up. i was looking at it from a biological view with moderate use. no one would knowingly willingly smoke or drink themselves to death with alcohol or tobacco.

although it is possible to smoke yourself to death as well.

well then under relaxation chain smoking qualifies, I'm sure
john wayne was quite relaxed with a few shots of liquor and 6
packs a day

no we need a definition of moderate, one beer vs. one cigarette
what happens when liquor come into the picture

Both of them at the same time is definitely the way to go. That's the way to use both in their full glory.

I quit smoking cigs 1 1/2 years ago and it was the best decision I ever made.
I still drink but alcohol has never been a problem for me.

Tobacco sucks

i don't get what you're trying to prove, are you trying to convince me that alcohol is worse than tobacco or something?

i don't know exactly how you would quantify the damages associated with both activities, but as above poster pointed out, from a biological point of view, tobacco does more damage. the story of john wayne doesn't make your argument definitive, i'm sure i could find someone in the history of human kind who existed solely on alcohol, beer or otherwise.

" Epidemiologists soon noticed, however, that lung cancer, rare before the 20th century, had increased dramatically beginning about 1930. "

I wonder why it wasnt until the 30s that tobacco was causing
lung cancer, could it coincide with the establishment of big
tobacco in the US 30-50 years prior?

that both can be dangerous drugs, obviously mass produced
chemically treated tobacco is far more dangerous than natural
tobacco just as liquor is harder for your liver to process than
beer, in fact in moderation beer and wine are quite good for you

he, like the rest of us are simply stating opinion, like you
said here, "how you would quantify the damages associated with
both activities", for that we need to define certain things like
quantity considered as 'moderate use', how can we equate an
amount of tobacco to an amount of liquor
