i dunno about that... there are many actions you take that are acted upon by pure spontenaeity, by your instinct.
but for your support, that is basically the 'fight or flight' idea, right?

interesting.... so is the desire for beneficial results and the fear of consequences also in that comment? then it would also include the decision based on right or wrong. yeah, i do like that comment.

I'd say that's a pretty fair statement for conscious actions. Granted it doesn't cover things like sleepwalking or being born.

The more I think about it, the more it makes sense to me. I know that there are so many human emotions that it is hard to clump all actions in to only two catagories. I do feel that desire and fear are the two most universal emotions.

I think that would fall under the desire category. You desire things that you need. Just like I desire food when I'm hungry.

I had a mentor that once told me, "you only know two ways to deal with your environment, fear and anger!" I of course added, "you forgot loathing!" and he smacked me on the forehead.
Point is that these emotions are in fact the way we attempt to control our world. Just watch babies when they are unhappy or trying to get attention. The paths we take as a result of knowing higher realms of conscienceness can utilize much different methods and indicates maturity in ourselves or others. I have always been impressed with people who don't get mad when something makes them angry. (Me, I just prefer blowing shit/people up.......in my mind people!) But when I get mad, I get angry and I can't think and it makes me madder, like an amplifier, it goes on and on.
I seperate "angry" from ":mad" because "mad" implies the intellectual process of interperting data into the state of being "angry" which begins with the decision to act on the decision to be mad.
Those that impress me seem to be able to cut the tie between the way they think and the way they feel, which I think is way cool. I usually end up hurting myself more than the original act or item of my discontent instead of making some type of achievement as a result or just letting go of the whole yarn.
BTW - don't think I'm yearning toward passifiism because nothing could be further from the truth. I still think some good comes from this basic instintual response but there are other ways that don't tax US as much in the process.

I would say that fear was the opposite of confidence and vice versa. Desire implies an intense "wanting" of some kind, a "longing" for something specific. Desire is a verb associated mostly with sexual contextes. FYI

I believe this statement is wrong in two ways. Desire? Some things we do we do for what we want very badly, but sometimes you could also be looking out for your well being. I think the same way with fear.
Hell, some might even be semi-controlled, how do you know?
