ever had a religious experience while off drugs?
    #781763 - 07/28/02 11:26 AM (14 years, 4 months ago)

well have you ever had a religious experience while not on drugs?
i've had quite a few. sometimes i am meditating and i have visions. seeing and talking to people long dead that i loved dearly. sometimes i am in church and i cry like a baby the whole time. sometimes i am asking life why i'm here and i open a book given to me by a friend and there is a word for word answer to the question i am asking. i've never seen this in the book before, even though i've owned it for a year. sometimes i am depressed and my mother will call and say, "i just had a dream that you were depressed and troubled, what's wrong?"
does anyone have things like this happen to them?

When my grandfather was in the hospital after having a heart attack I went to a church to pray for him. I was only a child and I wasn't religious but if there was a god I intended to find him. So I went to the church and prayed for an hour for my grandfather to recover. I even swore my ownself to god on that day. After I left I was filled with a feeling of peace and I knew that everything would be alright and he would recover soon. I was absolutely convinced of this. He died that night after suffering another heart attack at the hospital. This "experience" definitely gave me an insight into the way people get sucked into religion because of the false sense of security they can find in believing there is a higher power looking out for them. So while it turned me away from religion, it was beneficial in what it showed me.

Yes, everyday I think about that kind of stuff. Only I call it spirituality, I do like learning about religions though.

All the time.....
Sometimes I get information that there is no possible way to get (from a five physical senses point of view) sometimes I see the past, or predict the future. Its not something that I control, it just happens to me when I tune in.
I've thought many times how people describing "drug experiences" sound like they are talking about the way I feel most every day. I have learning disabilities and forget things like how to work the ATM, or my age, or phone #, or what my address is......kind of like somebody that is "high" and can't do the simplest task until they sober up......
Guess I'm just drunk on life and God!

The closest thing I have to religious experience is when I get a significant perspective shift that challenges my default way of thinking- this definitely happens on shrooms but more frequently, it is happening when I am sober (I think).

Like after consolidating a lot of my thoughts while shrooming and then reading some Alan Watts (Man, I should open a whole thread on this guy), I will look at the world in a totally different way- in a more holistic sense. The statement ?Man is not a part of the universe but of the universe? kind of gets at my experience. This is my religious experience and I hope I can experience it more and more.

that's why shrooms are so great, they enhance your mind and make it grow, so that you can think bigger, better, things all the time.

What do you mean by 'religious experience?' Can it be something spiritual such as reincarnation (which is held as a religious tenet by some) or perceived communication with a deceased person?

hmmm. so i say crying, and you think i mean crying over soemthing sad... cryig with tears of joy man, pure ectasy. if you've never experienced it, then i don't think i could explain it. but i didn't ask for opinions on my sprirtual experiences...even if you don't believe in the christian God, spirituality could be just your own energy flowing and moving with everyone elses...whatever religion or spirituality is to you, then that's cool. and if you had an experience that was para normal. ab normal...whatever. share it. that's what i'm saying braa.

(i knew the way in which you meant crying, just in case you really thought i didn't get it)...
I'm pretty familiar with the Christian God (i'm a reformed UberCharismaticBornAgainType) and i've read a bit...

I must say, that (based on your signiture) that you're a hip tripper Christian.
I think thats great! Hmmmm....
Smoke dope too?...Shamanistic style orgies?
Now that's the type of ritual that'd get me into a pew again!

Damn...
what a fine community this Shroomery is!

Thx,
the pale e

i just believe in the fact that god put things here that affect our brain, and if he didn't want us to use them then they woudln't affect our brain. but i don't disbelieve any of the teachings of the catholic church. but hipper, more open minded yes...christianity is a religion of love peace and tolerance. if anyone claims it, yet doesn't display these signs or at least attempt to, then don't mind him he is either young in his faith, or not really a christian at all. but back to the topic...
religious experiences.
