Maybe it's kind of a stab at people who pray to God all the time to help their problems, maybe what he means is "It's OK to call on God for help, but don't make problems for yourself in the meantime."

What do you think?

Maybe it means to mold things before they become too set? Stray away from habit and addiction? That's what it means to me, not sure what it could have meant to HST, maybe we could resurrect his spirit and ask him (no joke).

I think he meant god will only help you if you need the help. So you must row away from the shore and put yourself in danger. Sounds pretty sarcastic.

I reduce it mathematically.

Call on God and do nothing = danger!

Row away from the rocks = safety.

Row away from the rock + call on God = safety.

R = S

R + C = S

Therefore C = zero or null or calling God has no value. Thus prayer is disproved. Next.

I think the closest equivalent to this quote is one from Benjamin Franklin:

"God helps those who help themselves."

What Thompson was saying, IMO, is that one should not passively sit by as one's boat crashes into the rocks, all the while begging God to save you.

The only flaw here is that R does not always equal S. And simply because you label the two S's the same does not mean that they are. You could lose a leg from a shark bite or something in S-1, but come out scotch free in S-2, or vice versa.

It was kind of a disguised plea.  I read it as

"Believe in a God if you must (sigh.......) but have the good sense to make rational decisions and keep your wits about you."
