The Sacred Mushroom & the Cross: A Study of the Nature and Origins of Christianity within the Fertility Cults of the Ancient Near East

A Christian View of the Mushroom Myth (response to Allegro's book)

John C. King

http://deoxy.org/mushman.htm
In the winter of 1991, hikers in the Italian Alps came across the well preserved remains of a man who died over 5,300 years ago, approximately 200 years later than the Tassili cave artist. Dubbed the "Iceman" by the news media, he was well equipped with a knapsack, flint axe, a string of dried Birch Polypores (Piptoporus betulinus) and another yet unidentified mushroom. The polypores can be used as tinder for starting fires and as medicine for treating wounds. Further, a rich tea with immuno-enhancing properties can be prepared by boiling these mushrooms. Equipped for traversing the wilderness, this intrepid adventurer had discovered the value of the noble polypores. Even today, this knowledge can be life-saving for anyone astray in the wilderness.

Aristotle, Plato, and Sophocles all participated in religious ceremonies at Eleusis where an unusal temple honored Demeter, the Goddess of Earth. For over two milennia, thousands of pilgrims journeyed fourteen miles from Athens to Eleusis, paying the equivalent of a month's wage for the privilege of attendind the annual ceremony. The pilgrims were ritually harassed on their journey to the temple, apparently in good humor.

These ceremonies continued until repressed in the early centuries of the Christian era.
In 1977, at a mushroom conference on the Olympic Peninsula, R. Gordon Wasson, Albert Hoffman, and Carl Ruck first postulated, that the Eleusinian mysteries centered on the use of psychoactive fungi. Their papers were later published in a book entitled The Road the Eleusis: Unveiling the Secret of the Mysteries (1978). That Aristotle and other founders of western philosophy undertook such intellectual adventures, and that this secret ceremony persisted for nearly 2,000 years, underscores the profound impact that fungal rites have had on the evolution of western conciousness.

Er...no...I think if Jesus was actually historical, He would have subscribed to Jewish dietary law and eating mushrooms grown in camel dung is just not kosher.

Clark Heinrich is completely off the chain in his obsession with Amanita muscaria, which he sees as the source for virtually every religious and esoteric tradition (see Strange Fruit: Alchemy and Religion). I understand why author Andy Letcher relegates Heinrich's reiteration of Gordon Wasson's theory to "the lunatic fringe" in his book Shroom: A Cultural History of the Magic Mushroom.

Amanita's do not grow in the desert conditions of the Middle East, specifically in the area where Jesus allegedly lived. If Jesus/Y'shua lived Jewish life as per scriptural reference, He would not have consumed mushrooms of any kind because they are not kosher. Dung-loving mushrooms even more to the point.

I do not quite get why some people try to force genuine religious experience into their own limited understanding of substance-occasioned religious experience. This is only one 'variety of religious experience' and not even the completely spontaneous variety. Substance-occasioned entheogenic experience is primarily useful as I see it as an approximation of the Real Deal - a taste of what is possible. Otherwise, the substance, which may still reasonably be regarded as a sacramental substance runs the danger of become idolized to some degree as a plant 'spirit.' Even the Transubstantial Bread and Wine of Catholic eucharistic theology becomes the very Body and Blood of Christ, which if viewed from a Protestant theological perspective, is idolatrous. By idolatry, I mean the materialistic reduction of a Transcendental Mystery to a perceptible phenomenon. Symbolism makes much more sense to me regarding sacraments rather than magickal change, but this is very Protestant of me, I realize (though I do not claim a single defining denomination for my faith). Symbols point to Transcendental Realities.

Peace.

Here is my speculation on this topic:

  • Maybe most people who tried shrooms in ancient times just got a bit fucked up and never had a mind-shattering experience? So there was no basis for a religious cult in most places.
  • Maybe those who knew about the deeper psychedelic effects were forced underground when the first large nation-states appeared and rulers institutionalized religion in order to consolidate their power. With the Aztecs being an exception.

And maybe there exists an unknown metabolic pathway in some obscure creature that converts the natural safrole in camphor oil into MDMA, so that Moses actually could drop E after eating a specially treated sacrificial animal?

very interesting...I think the "moses doing E" thing seems more unlikely than the idea that many civilizations happened upon the power of the psilocybian shroom. I thinks it's very possible many underground mushroom cults where lost to history, repressed into non-existence by larger intuitions or simply covered up. I just think the knowledge and power of the shroom was much more widely known than what is currently perceived.

I'm going to try to find more.

What IMO is really weird is that there is very little written about psilocybin mushrooms in the western word before 1957.  It's not like these things are rare.  Panaeolus subbalteatus is a fungal weed, if your anywhere around where horse shit in the spring or fall, you're gonna kick one. Big laughing Gyms stick out like a beacon, and not once do they show up in the great literary tradition of the western world. In central Europe to Northwest Europe and England, Psilocybe cyanescens is happy and at home. It's as if no one was paying attention.

I think this applies quite equally to any of the other millions of species of plant and fungus life all over this planet.

 It's weird that psilocybin mushrooms don't show up in Russian, German or Polish ligature (literature, spell check missed that), they weren't mycophobes.

 Not that I'm going to put any effort into research on the subject, it would be interesting to hear to reason why.

I'm not an expert on the subject, seems to me though, that anything that changes your "mind" in the "old world" was written about. So I don't think this applies equally to all species.

But then again, in those regions there's amanita muscaria.

Well, what makes you think that psilocybin mushrooms even occur naturally in those areas? It was proposed earlier that these mushrooms "inhabit every area of the earth", but I don't see this as being true at all. From what I understand, they require high humidity, and consistently warm temperatures.

In fact, researching into the regions in which they grow naturally, areas such as the gulf states of the United States, Mexico, Central and South America are mentioned... The West Indies, Thailand, Cambodia, India and Australia....

It would be no surprise, then, why European countries would not have literature devoted to these mushrooms.... Much more efficent reasoning than some kind of religious coverup... :smirk:

Not true. For example species like Psilocybe Semilanceata and Panaeolus Subbalteatus grow all over Scandinavia, except in the mountain regions where the ground is frozen all year round.

yes, I agree and have heard those before... I would say that - "psilocybin mushrooms grow all over the world" is a far statement.
The grow coast to coast in the US, We know they are in Mexico and South America, Theres plenty of hunters from Canada as well. Europe has it's liberty caps, and as you move east- china, india and most of the east has shrooms as well..., So i think shrooms do grow all over the world...
