Just after reading that, I found a colony of ants in my front yard, they are building fungus out of my compost. Their fungus, or mold it looks like is pretty large, but I'm sure is what you are saying, because they set up home next to this, and dug holes to get to the compost, and they are ferreting the compost to the fungus pile, how they turned the compost into compost is beyond me though.. I'll probraly take a closer look tommarow.

I just wanted to add that the compost I had mycelium growing on twigs and on top of the soil, I thought that was important, because the fungus the ants are growing is white. The ants are black and very small. is too bad I'm moving.

That's interesting. You might have discovered a new species. I wonder what they do with the mycelium. I found it amazing that the Leaf-cutter ants clone theirs. They don't wait for the shrooms to grow and reproduce on their own.

"discovered that the most sophisticated leafcutters had propagated one fungus lineage for at least 23 million years. And, most surprisingly, Schultz and Mueller, with aid from other scientists, have surmised that the fungi themselves may have played an important role in ant farming. Possibly the fungi have developed tricks to fool the ants into moving and harvesting them, enabling the fungi to thrive more than they could on their own."

So is this a corollary to the human/mushroom symbiotic relationship, then? The various strains of which we are so fond are likely doing much better as a species and "spreading" further across the planet (albeit in odd human environments ie: the basement, attic, bedroom closet or garden shed) since we started consuming them. The psy cub strain was virtually unknown in the last century - now it's everywhere. Perhaps the "fungi have developed tricks to fool" the humans, eh? Perhaps the whole mushroom/human experience is the mushrooms tool for evolutionary advancement... in which case, I am glad to assist!

I like that, it makes evolutionary sense.

Not really accurate. Psy cube has been present on almost every continent on earth for thousands of years. Been used in south america for at least 10,000 years and there's a lot of evidence for it's use in Africa. Not to mention the strange fact that cows are considered holy in india..and where do magic mushrooms tend to grow? Cowshit...fascinating...

Did you read the full text? I just re-skimmed it and am surprised that they don't identify the fungi species or strains in question. I get the feeling that the one scientist is all too familiar with the "mind-altering" properties of some fungi --especially when he says "I needed a criterion for figuring out not just those things that appear to be filled with wonder but those things that appear to be filled with wonder and are REAL." I would gamble he was (or still is) a shroomer.

It just rained, and most of it washed away,, I wonder if they are able to rebuild the fungus again.
