Something about evolution...

Anybody ever wonder if there is some great evolutionary leap for plants, sort of like the great leap to humanity? This has to exist in theory right? We are all subject to the same laws of nature, we just took different paths in our evolutions. Plants and animals only started branching in different directions relatively early compared to say a gorilla and a human. Maybe a giant leap on the same level as humanity already occurred and we didn't even notice. :shrug:

We know alot about how plants stay alive, but we have no clue whatsoever how they live.

Talking about this subject as a human isn't enough for you? I consider our sentience and our ability to communicate (however limited) a great leap.

Plant consciousness? I'm not sure what your getting at how they live, perhaps you can expand more on that.

The tree from bacteria to plants is fairly well known, and there aren't any leaps required.

Blue-green algae is an example of bacteria that can photosynthesize, which is the best description for plants that I can think of.

A leap in evolution not consciousness. I mean look how far plants have gone without any sign of consciouosness. At the same time there is no doubt that they are evolving.

Yes I agree it would... but your the one talking about consciousness, not me.

I was speaking of evolution which does not exclude consciousness, but certainly isnt limited to that. Your the one who interpreted a leap in evolution to consciousness.

No the point was that unless your a creationist its a blatant fact that plants are evolving. Not to cast aspersions and cause people to make ridiculous assumptions.

Now as far as this point of yours... where is it? Your post reads like more of a statement then anything, perhaps its time to make it.

Uhh, there's been quite a bit of evolution in plants. The ones that adapted better to Tropical climates look different from the ones that adapted to seasonal forests. There's also lichen, fungus and plant symbiotes that aide eachothers survival.

I think your idea about "evolutionary leaps" is a little unfounded. Humans didn't just hit some evolution warpspeed drive, we evolved the way we did because it ensured survival. Just so happens, it led to us being the predominant controllers of the planet. Natural selection argues that evolution isn't random and that's the only way I can see "leaps" happening, if it's random.

I don't think we will see plants change too much unless aspects of our environment dramatically change, as plant life is usually highly efficent in terms of collecting energy. They go straight to the source. :sun: :smile:

Its a shame that they aren't capable of evolving in a manner to protect agansit the greatest threat to their survival. :frown: We'll think twice about cutting down trees if they start fucking eating us. :evil: :thumbup:

There had to be a point in human evolution, a crossing of a line where suddenly we were self aware because your either self aware or not. How about the extreme change of going from living without technology to with it?

And i completely agree there has been evolution in plants, just there hasnt been any apparent "leap" thats on the same scale as the human one.

You shouldn't expect equilibrium in evolution, its absurd and against many evolutionary doctrines, i.e. survival of the fittest.

When trees, especially the monsters, are cut down a wholllllllle bunch of sunlight gets into a place that hasn't seen it since those monsters were smaller. This leads to competition for the sunlight and the trees will regrow. The real problem is the destruction to the ecosystem, but even that will balance after a while.

Oh, and trees evolving to eat us would be the worse course for them. I don't think they'd be around too long, not with all those pretty chainsaws.

Well as trendal put it, trees are not a far cry from algae or bacteria in their processes. Then take into consideration that plant life has been around longer than animal life (I think?). What have plants been doing all this time, getting bigger??? We are always looking for evolution in our own terms, (like consciousness), so maybe there is alot more to plants than we think there is.
