PARIS (AFP) - France became the first country to open its files on UFOs Thursday when the national space agency unveiled a website documenting more than 1,600 sightings spanning five decades.

The online archives, which will be updated as new cases are reported, catalogues in minute detail cases ranging from the easily dismissed to a handful that continue to perplex even hard-nosed scientists.

"It is a world first," said Jacques Patenet, the aeronautical engineer who heads the office for the study of "non-identified aerospatial phenomena."

Known as OVNIs in French, UFOs have always generated intense interest along with countless conspiracy theories about secretive government cover-ups of findings deemed too sensitive or alarming for public consumption.

"Cases such as the lady who reported seeing an object that looked like a flying roll of toilet paper" are clearly not worth investigating, said Patenet.

But many others involving multiple sightings -- in at least one case involving thousands of people across France -- and evidence such as burn marks and radar trackings showing flight patterns or accelerations that defy the laws of physics are taken very seriously.

A phalanx of beefy security guards formed a barrier in front of the space agency (CNES) headquarters where the announcement was made, "to screen out uninvited UFOlogists," an official explained.

Of the 1,600 cases registered since 1954, nearly 25 percent are classified as "type D", meaning that "despite good or very good data and credible witnesses, we are confronted with something we can't explain," Patenet said.

On January 8, 1981 outside the town of Trans-en-Provence in southern France, for example, a man working in a field reported hearing a strange whistling sound and seeing a saucer-like object about 2.5 meters (eight feet) in diameter land in his field about 50 meters (yards) away.

A dull-zinc grey, the saucer took off, he told police, almost immediately, leaving burn marks. Investigators took photos, and then collected and analyzed samples, and to this day no satisfactory explanation has been made.

The nearly 1,000 witness who said they saw flashing lights in the sky on November 5, 1990, by contrast, had simply seen a rocket fragment falling back into earth's atmosphere.

Patenet's answer to questions about evidence of life beyond Earth was sure to inflame the suspicions of those convinced the government is holding back: "We do not have the least proof that extra-terrestrials are behind the unexplained phenomena."

But then he added: "Nor do we have the least proof that they aren't."

The CNES fields between 50 and 100 UFO reports ever year, usually written up by police. Of these, 10 percent are the object of on-site investigations, Patenet said.

Other countries collect data more or less systematically about unidentified flying objects, notably in Britain and in the United States, where information can be requested on a case-by-case basis under the Freedom of Information Act.

"But we decided to do it the other way around and made everything available to the public," Patenet said.

The aim was to make it easier for scientists and other UFO buffs to access the data for research.

The website itself -- which crashed host servers hours after it was unveiled due to heavy traffic -- is extremely well organized and complete, even including scanned copies of police reports.

France shows some high intelligence here. opening the books to the masses will give all of the really smart people who couldnt afford to go to college in order to become a "real" scientist, but are still very much"in the know" about this universe, a chance to form enough world wide energy to crack the code.

haha man im stoned. haha

anyways, has anyone read the book by Michael Tsarion:

Atlantis, Alien Visitaion and Genetic Manipulation ?

i just started, only like 35 pages deep... but its very interesting. ive never really put forth any "real" effort to read, believe, and try to understand the alien phenomena.

John C. Lilly talked about speaking to aliens after he shot a bunch of special k. sounds pretty cool. haha, so you go figure that one.

but anyways, the book starts off with the old scripts of the days like the bible and torah and many many other scripts, about the "chariots of fire in the sky" the "giants"

all kinds of stuff like that.

anyone else read the book?

I've been trying to tell other people this but I'm rarely believed. It dismays me that the majority of the public are completely unaware of the evidence that is available.

Have a look at my ratings, I've been called all sorts of insults. It makes me wonder if maybe people are scared of this. Maybe they have to dismiss it and call me names because they prefer to take the easy option and follow the linch mob created by our governments and media.

I can understand why though, I was shit scared after my close encounter.

Lets get this stuff put into the realms of scientific investigation where it always should of been. Not something that is stigmatised by society so that intelligence agencies can keep the knowledge hidden.

Look man, I try to apply logic to this...

Aliens who could produce the technology NEEDED to get here would be so ridiculously advanced, they would consider us a lower, WAY LOWER lifeform.

We would be slaughtered for our planet's minerals, or we would be enslaved for our bipedal nature, opposable thumbs and ability to follow instructions under duress.

Maybe, the aliens would be meat-eaters, and find us tasty.

We kill EACH OTHER for less... Why would you assume aliens would be nice to us?

I saw this quick clip on this Discovery OnDemand thing. It basically said that there are three types of societies. There are the lowest, which consists of beings that have advanced past their own planets and set up space colonies. The next step up is a civilization that harnesses the energies from their local star to power their whole society. They pretty much have infinite energy. The third level up would be your stereotypical Galactic Empire, as seen in Star Wars. This civilization is so advanced that they control a large portion of the galaxy, if not multiple galaxies.

Humans are not even a Type 1 civilization yet. Aliens would need a pretty good reason to show up on Earth.

>>>We would be slaughtered for our planet's minerals

Hold on a second, your logic tells you a way more technologically advanced race would slaughter us for our minerals??! Uhh, thats some very strange *logic* my friend.

I'm sure with the billions of planets out there, theres no need to slaughter us for our minerals. Why slaughter us anyway lol they could just take them - we couldn't stop them. I'm sure they also have their own food sources, not likely to be human flesh either.

They would probably treat us the same way which we treat beings who are lower in evolution. Capture them, study and test them. Which so far is exactly what the majority of the evidence points too.

OK check out the Belgium Black Triangle mass sightings for evidence of fighter planes and multiple radar towers recording a craft with an infinite acceleration - deemed impossible by our laws of physics.

For markings left at the scene check out the Zamora Incident.

There's many more to be honest I don't have the time to do the research for you but the evidence is all out there - as usual you must obtain multiple trusted sources - don't just goto some random conspiracy website and call bullshit.

Whatever the proper wording is I don't really care - radars and planes recorded the craft accelerating at speeds that break our laws of physics.

'Infinate acceleration' was the wording used by the Belgium government. I can't remember exactly who said it.

Some of the radar tape taken from the F-16s was sent to the Centre for the Study of Electronic Warfare and was examined by the eminent Professor Emile Schweicher. In Professor Schweicher's opinion the UFO could manoeuvre in a manner that is not possible according to our laws of mechanics and it was capable of sudden changes of velocity implying it had "infinite acceleration", which again is not possible. In the professor's own words:
"I think extraterrestrial intelligence is very highly likely".

Although this is not necessarily the case, logic would tend to imply that as a species evolves higher, the more it also evolves *morals*. (I don't remember the exact thread but there was one recently detailing this in apes).  One would think that by the time a civilization would be able to develop such technology, the grand majority would be compassionate, responsible, and nondetrimental to the evolution of conciousness.

It is arrogant to assume that we completely understand the nature of the universe and space/time travel.

What does that have to do with some knucklehead making up misleading statements. The knucklehead being whoever wrote the report that claims "breaking the laws of physics" and "infinite acceleration". Obviously, if it happened, the laws of physics were not broken (duh) and common sense tells us that there cannot be "infinite acceleration", even if it does sound good. ("infinite acceleration" is like saying saying that something can become "infinitely small"... pure nonsense)

Whats that statement all about?

Is that your humor?

I don't find anything amusing about continuing the media's bullshit. Continuing to accept like the masses that this stuff is just lots of very delusional people (including delusional scientists and professors - the list goes on)

Maybe your trying to amuse other people? The masses all know is bullshit right? Even though all they know about it is what they've seen on TV.

Shit like that pisses me off. Whats the smug face for? Smugness is ignorance.

As I've already stated that statement came from a professor not the person who wrote the arguement.

I would generally expect a professor to have more knowledge than some random knucklehead (you seuss) on the net who thinks he/she knows everything.

As I also already said 'suggests an infinate acceleration'.

No matter what bs technicalities of wording you want to throw out it doesn't change the fact that this craft was recorded by radar, chased by f-16's, filmed and photographed by shitloads of people. SO other than pointing out a technicality of wording, do you have anything useful to add to this debate?.

I hope France will be an example of the worldwide cover up to be revealed. This cover up makes total sense, of course and after the cold war, borders also about this subject are about to crumble. Alone the fact that there were many things intentionally hidden from the population is a scandal and forces people to investigate even harder.
There are astonishing videos on youtube and google and it seems that even the american conspiracy can't hide the facts for very much longer.
I'm on a short holiday right now and watched almost all of the tons of google-videos with 'ufo' in it. About 10% is really worth the time watching. Maybe I'll make a quick 'shopping list'
Things are clearing up.

> As I've already stated that statement came from a professor not the person who wrote the arguement. (sic)

And I was very clear in my statement: "The knucklehead being whoever wrote the report" meaning the 'professor' or whoever...

> I would generally expect a professor to have more knowledge than some random knucklehead (you seuss)

Be careful on the flaming.  That is a no-no here.  Unfortunately, I have met many professors that shouldn't be teaching elementary school, let alone higher education.  I am certainly no expert on UFOs or aviation, but I know my basic high school physics, and I know that anybody that makes a claim of "infinite acceleration" based upon radar has zero grasp of physics, professor or not.

> As I also already said 'suggests an infinate (sic) acceleration'.

So is it you or the professor that is claiming infinite acceleration?  Make up your mind.  Either way, it doesn't matter if it is "suggested" or or not... the words "infinite acceleration" are meaningless when used together the same way that the words "infinitely small" are meaningless when used together.  Just as something cannot be infinitely small, something cannot "have" infinite acceleration.  I can't even construct a correct sentence using the that phrase... "We infinitely accelerated an object"... what in the world does that mean?  Nothing! It is nonsense.

>  SO other than pointing out a technicality of wording

The technicality of the wording is my point.  Ask yourself why a person with no understanding of basic physics has to use scientific sounding words to try and convince people that they are correct.  To the layperson, "infinite acceleration" sounds impressive, much more so than "it moved really fast", however, it is very misleading and completely inaccurate.

> I don't see why people have such an emotional investment in these issues.

Personally, I get upset (a failing, I know) when I see people incorrectly use science to try and sound as if they know what they are talking about to add weight to their arguments.  Had the "professor" used wording such as "it moved ten times faster than the jets chasing it" or "it moved really fast" or "it moved faster than anything we have ever measured in the lab" or any other halfway decent description, then I wouldn't have a problem... but "infinite acceleration" tells me that the person has no grasp of science, yet is trying to pretend otherwise.  This is fraud, and I take it personally.  :frown:

Apologies, I have trouble with this.

I had a close encounter when I was younger and have spent most my life having anybody I did tell laugh at me. I've become quite resentful of people not open-minded to the posability of its reality.

I feel very alone because theres very few people that understand. I'm trying to make people understand. I know I shouldn't really care - what does it matter? It just seems that it was made my mission - to show other people that some of the unknown/paranormal does exist.

An instant change in direction while maintaining a constant velocity IS a change in acceleration, and a very high one.  Accelerations is composed of two magnitudes.  While the UFO's speed did not change, it's angular velocity did change.  I agree that to call it infinite is silly, but pointing out absurdities in a man's vocabulary hardly subtracts from the validity of the objective evidence.

Or 'infinite acceleration' simply means, literally 'jumping' from one velocity to another one, in an instant (infinite short time ).
That seems possible for 'massless' 'objects'.

To the contrary, had the instance been described as you presented it, I would have no problem.  Instead, somebody tried to sound like a scientific expert.  This is misleading, and causes me to question everything from this person (again, whoever wrote the report).  If they lie once, through their supposed mastery of physics, then why should I believe anything that they say?

> literally 'jumping' from one velocity to another one

I'm guessing that is what the person was trying to imply... but given the wavelength of radar, one cannot measure absolutely, thus again the claim of 'infinite acceleration' based upon radar measurements is ludicrous.

> I've become quite resentful of people not open-minded to the posability (sic) of its reality.

Please don't take my comments as a statement of belief towards you, UFOs, or anything else related.  I do not doubt your experiences, nor do I laugh at you.

My one and only gripe is with people that are non-scientists pretending to be scientists by using scientific words to convince other non-scientists that they know more than they really do or to add weight to their observations.  I view this sort of behavior as fraud.  If people want me to believe what they say, then they need to present the facts of what was seen rather than making up BS trying to sound like an expert.

A good example, just because somebody sees a floating ghost does not mean that the ghost is massless.  If that person describes the ghost as massless, rather than floating, then I immediately toss everything that person says into the trash.  Not because I don't believe that they saw a ghost, but because they are inflating the description of what they saw with non-objective beliefs.

> That seems possible for 'massless' 'objects'.

... and how, exactly, are microwaves (used in radar) going to be reflected by 'massless' 'objects'.

What wud it be doing hovering over Belgium?

Jets are incapable of the maneuvers this craft performed.

There's tons of high res photos and home video - check it out.

Why would you prefer to believe it was a jet? Can you not take it for what it was - a UFO. Thats not to say its E.T. But on the weight of available evidence it appears likely as the technology was so advanced from known craft.

If it was a high tech craft - why wud it be hovering over a Belgium city? Bizarre.
