Sugar is pretty awful. I've recently seriously cut down on sugar. I made the mistake of drinking a can of Hawaiian Punch because my friend brought all this unhealthy nonsense to my house; it was god-awful. It almost tasted grainy because it had so much sugar in it. 42g to be specific.

I don't think anything meaningful can come from the comparison of sugar and organised religion. Also your facts on sugar are flawed, the obvious benefit of human consumption is the high density of energy refined sugar contains.

I think you are missing the point.

Sugar is REAL.

Organized religion (ALL of them) are NOT REAL.

At least the "rape, pillage, murder, slave labor and economic exploitation" of Cane Sugar has produced SOMETHING. And it's good stuff.

All the "rape, pillage, murder, slave labor and economic exploitation" that religion spawned has resulted in NOTHING.

There is a pretty big difference.

That is a very good perspective.... but how do you know that religion has not done good things? have you ever been to an NA meeting where the addicts turn to dependence on religion to overcome their problems? They are completely sincere, it has healed them and it helps them through their hard times.

If you take a placebo and it heals you, it is not a placebo afterall is it? You have tapped something real, but you have given it a tangible form so that you may understand it.

Now sugar, like religion, has uses and misuses.

I am not sure what good uses of sugar are, but I know that if you have a candy bar now and then as long as you have a healthy diet there is no harm. What is wrong is when sugar is forced upon us. Then it kills us in large numbers because we do not have the understandings necessary to assimilate sugar into our diets, rather we are told simply to consume and conform to habits of consumption.

It would be very hard to look at Buddhism and think that it has done nothing for the world. Contrary it is perhaps the most a-religious religion around. Yet still, if forced and not understood, it can be dangerous, as acknowladged by the founder himself. He called his teachings a snake. But what a shame if we didn't have them, there is definitely something to be learned, and it is maintained by a community of people who actually have the higher consciousness that their teacher talks about.

There will always be misuses, but they come from intentions of greed.

But there are religions and religious movements that come from a state of pure intention. To ignore all the beauty and focus on the failures is a grievous mistake in my opinion. Unfortunately some religions seem set up to be more easily abused, whereas some tell you to be skeptical of their own validity.

"Eating refined sugar has no nutritional value whatsoever"
This is just patently false. Sucrose is hydrolyzed to fructose and glucose, both of which can be further metabolized to create ATP, your body's essential "fuel", which is totally vital for the correct functioning of every cell in your body.

I'm curious as to how the fuck you compared sugar with religion?

Also, everything that is even slightly industrial in nature is spawned from previous moral fuckabouts.

lol. no really, LOL.

Sugar contains no real nutrition. If we never had another teaspoon of dietary sugar in our life, our nutritional health would not be affected in the slightest (in fact, it would most likely get much better, especially for your teeth). So from a health viewpoint sugar is valueless.

NA is not a religion, it is a "program." My dad is not religious and AA saved his life. It is basically re-programming yourself. Some people need it.

Re: Sugar and Religion [Re: Sacred_Fool]

As for organized religion not being real; let us start with a definition of real we can all agree on...

From Dictionary.com-

Real, actual, true in general use describe objects, persons, experiences, etc., that are what they are said or purport to be. That which is described as real is genuine as opposed to counterfeit, false, or merely supposed: a real emerald; real leather binding; My real ambition is to be a dentist. "Actual" usually stresses contrast with another state of affairs that has been proposed or suggested: The actual cost is much less; to conceal one's actual motive. "True" implies a perfect correspondence with actuality and is in direct contrast to that which is false or inaccurate: a true account of the events; not bravado but true courage.

I can see how someone could logically say religion is not True, but organized religion does to some extent exist in reality. Thus, making it a "real" occurrence. People talk about religion, go to temples, have wars over it, and even devote their lives to it. Saying organized religion isn't "real" is like saying government isn't "real." Just because a political policy isn't tangible does not mean it can't effect you in some way.

I'm bustin' out the dictionary.com again:

cult –noun
1. a particular system of religious worship, esp. with reference to its rites and ceremonies.
2. an instance of great veneration of a person, ideal, or thing, esp. as manifested by a body of admirers: the physical fitness cult.
3. the object of such devotion.
4. a group or sect bound together by veneration of the same thing, person, ideal, etc.
5. Sociology. a group having a sacred ideology and a set of rites centering around their sacred symbols.
6. a religion or sect considered to be false, unorthodox, or extremist, with members often living outside of conventional society under the direction of a charismatic leader.
7. the members of such a religion or sect.
8. any system for treating human sickness that originated by a person usually claiming to have sole insight into the nature of disease, and that employs methods regarded as unorthodox or unscientific.

You don't worship anything in the 12 step program. Using a "higher power" is not the same as worshiping it. There is nothing inherently sacred about it (or rather, you're not required to believe so). There are no religious ceremonies. There are no charismatic leaders claiming to have the sole insight. Atheists can still work the program. I don't see how a 12 step program fits into any of these definitions, but if you can prove otherwise please do.

Sugar aids in the absorption of salts and water when given to people suffering from dehydration.

A recipe,

Table Salt - 3/4 teaspoon
Baking Powder - 1 teaspoon
Sugar -4 tablespoons
Orange juice - I cup
Water - I quart/liter

"Nutrition" is not something real that foods can "contain". Energy on the other hand is real and foods (esp. sugar) can and do contain energy. Your body needs energy to function and therefore sugar can and does serve a function for your body. Whether this sugar is refined sucrose or some other dietary carbohydrate is basically irrelevant. The truth is, if you never had any more dietary sugar in your life, you would die. Period.

way to generalize. a carbohydrate that turns into sugar during digestion, is not the same as refined sugar. If you were to cut all sources of energy out of your diet, then yes you would probably notice a big change. That's actually for the most part what atkins is, and thats why its so horrible for you.

this thread hasn't made any sense since the beginning.

"a particular system of religious worship, esp. with reference to its rites and ceremonies. "
Oh, lemme guess, 12 steps is "spiritual", not religious? BS, God is a requirement of AA and NA, read the big book. Also, find out how many times you see the word god in the big book, the 12 steps, and the 12 traditions. Goto an AA meeting and see how many times they reference god or higher power in the meetings. Also
"ny system for treating human sickness that originated by a person usually claiming to have sole insight into the nature of disease, and that employs methods regarded as unorthodox or unscientific."
LOL, they even have a definition especially for AA.

I have read parts of the Big Book, and I have been to many meetings. I have known Atheists who work the program, and have heard stories of higher power being things as kooky as "a shot glass" or someones' grandmother. I don't see why people have to interpret a higher power in such limited ways. Again, 12 step programs have no religious ceremonies. Do I have to define a religious ceremony?

"Claiming to have sole insight" was never claimed in the Big Book. I can go find some exact quotes to dispute this if you want, but from memory I can tell you that even the Big Book doesn't claim to be the only way to sobriety, it does claim to actually work, though. There is a difference. I think this quote might be referring more to "faith healers" and the cults that can emerge around them.

Honestly though, I'm not trying to defend AA as much as I am annoyed at how the word "cult" is molested. Frankly, 12 step programs are not good enough to be cults.  :piss:  :dogpile: (my stoned attempt to illustrate a cult.)

People in 12 step programs always claim that you can only get clean with a high power, and if you don't do it the AA way, you will relapse or live a miserable life. My brother goes to AA/NA all the time and it turned him into an ubber faggot. Also, the definition of cult isn't that simple.
