questions on chakras
    #3503509 - 12/15/04 02:33 PM (12 years, 11 months ago)

1) What is the purpose of chakras? What role do they play in our evolution?

2) When did chakras first start appearing in human beings? since I guess animals don't have any...or do they??

I realize these questions cannot easily be answered, there can only be guesses. But if you feel your guess might be the answer, go ahead!

My theory on chakras is that they are places in the body that have a greater concentration of nerves. We've attached importance to them because we can feel more from them.

That actually holds a little water..
Chakras in eastern medicine are the "energy" centers of the body.. there are literally hundreds of chakras throughout the body (as used in acupressure and acupuncture) that are connected through "meridians".. but most people focus on the main seven.
Chakra is a sanskrit word meaning wheel, or vortex, and it usually refers to each of the seven energy centers of which our consciousness, our energy system, is composed. These chakras, or energy centers, function as pumps or valves, regulating the flow of energy through our energy system.
Though it is said that chakras are not physical, but rather an aspect of consciousness.. they are intimately connected to the physical body and the organs as the physical system is dependent on the nervous and energy system. All of them are connected.

I can only offer what I've learned about them so far from other sources.

1) What is the purpose of chakras? What role do they play in our evolution?

The purpose appears to be connecting the physical body with the mental body and spirit body, creating an energy field that allows certain frequencies or types of energy to flow simultaneously through all three bodies. They're related to spiritual evolution in that your "level" of being depends on how much energy of each type is allowed to flow through the chakras. For example, human beings must be able to have a certain amount of energy flow through their 4th/heart chakra before they can "move on." This process cannot be forced. It's simply a natural progression of experience, and as those experiences accumulate, they have the effect of opening the flow a little more for certain chakras.

2) When did chakras first start appearing in human beings? since I guess animals don't have any...or do they??

I would imagine the chakras "appeared" when human beings were created. Animals have chakras as well, just not the same number and type as humans. Simply speaking of a chakra as a simultaneous influx/outflux energy field, even inaminate matter has one. Think of it as the Force, ala Star Wars. In more complex beings the energy fields are focused and "centered" in certain parts of the body for efficiency of purpose. So, in other words, chakas exist as long as there's an entity that's in need in a body/spirit connection, which is all entities.

sure animals have chakras

the purpose of the idea of evolution is to illustrate that forms are impermanent old ones pass away and new ones arise.

some people still think there is a steering system in evolution while life actually steers itself along the road that life is, nopurpose as such there.

the chakkras are convenient energy centers to focus the mind on.

1) What is the purpose of chakras? What role do they play in our evolution?

chakras represent our endocrine system. they are there for hormonal/chemical/emotional/spirit/mind/body balancing.

2) When did chakras first start appearing in human beings? since I guess animals don't have any...or do they??

when ever humans became. animals no sure but many people say that they do. i don't know so it doesn't matter

I think these questions and some of the answers are missing the point. Chakras or Padmas are conceptualization of the levels human mentaility and spirituality, closely mirroring western stages of psychological development with spiritual levels at the top. For example, the first, placed right on the gooch, the muladhara, is the most primal, representing the will to live present in infants. The top, the Lotus of a Thosand Petals, on the head, represents rapture or enlightenment transcending god or religion.

These came about as soon as Hinduism founded them. Thats when humans got them. We had the will to live since we were primitive animals, just as msot do with the exception of eusocial lifeforms, but we didn't have the gooch cakra until the concept was put together.

As far as their physical manifestations, my thoughts are the reason they exist are to better be able to concentrate and conceptualize each. As far as their placement, that is more or less intuitive. For example, the third cakra, representing ambition, at the stomach- where you get hungry. I see little reason why their physical existence should be anything else

Thanks for posting that.

All of those representations are no more than the organs surrounding each cakra, almost all of which intuitively follow as representations of the nature of each cakra for any culture with basic knowledge of anatomy.

The second, svadhishthana, the center of sexual energy... Reproductive Organs

The fitth, center for spiritual effort, what better organs to pair it with, than the respratory system in an exercise concentrated on breath? (spiritual comes from greek, meaning to breathe)

Anyway my point is, besides the obvious connotations and relationships, is there any reason to insist on actual physical locations of cakras?

its all about the mind/body connection, each chakra has traits when something in that area of the body of the chakra is not working properly that trait can deminish and vice versa.

If there wasn't, we wouldn't have more than one, because you could say that one is anywhere you wanted it to be.

Im going to call B.S. That is like saying If there weren't really a dozen gods on Mt. Olympus, the Greeks wouldn't use 12, because they could role them all into one.

You could say that cakra is anywhere, but it still wouldn't the many facets of human nature.

each excercise presumes a particular locus for the chakkra.
so to do the precise excercise requires exact positionment.

ultimately all positions are valid for something.

those along the spine get extra energy from motorsensory traffic, those on the nadis paralell to the spine get extra energy from the musculature, those in the gut get energy from organs.

getting it all flowing nicely is not just about lighting up a psychic christmas tree, but it relates also to yoga and health. Still I don't reccommend being that hung up about it unless you are in a specific yoga program. Expect different chakkras to be taught in each program, cultural differences abound in how energy is used same as there is variety in cooking.

the chakkra never MALFUNCTIONS, it is just a point of focus, an energy locus.
like running a program on a computer.
organs may need some help, the body may be injured, and people can carry trauma in their musculature and posture.
the term malfunction relates to body injury and carrying trauma in the mind and body afterward.
if there is a lot of trauma in a chakkra area, it will be harder to focus - harder to run the program, and it may block flow or concentration efforts elsewhere.
but working with it it will help in healing, as it is known (concentrating on chakkras) to increase blood circulation

Chakra psychology belongs to both Hindu and Buddhist Tantras. Hindu Tantra focuses on the Shakti (Power) aspect, Buddhist Tantra focuses on the Prajna (Wisdom) aspect - completely different models using the same basic structure. Ancient psychologies - EXTREMELY USEFUL in understanding the motive-forces inherent in every human. Like snowflakes, we all have the exact same basic motives, and like snowflakes, we are all different because of the degree of 'openness' of each motive center.

Not as simple as Ken Keyes 'Handbook to Higher Consciousness.' Try Lama Anagarika Govinda's 'Foundations of Tibetan Mysticism' for several years of study. It illustrates the Ascent Towards Universality (the Experience of OM) AND The Descent Towards Realization (the Experience of HUM). Root to Head, Head to Heart. Let those with ears hear.
