War on Terrorism Tax

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Sen. Joseph Lieberman said on Tuesday that Congress should consider a tax to fund the U.S.-declared war on terrorism and reduce the need to cut domestic programs to pay for security spending.

A former Democrat who supports the Iraq war and backs President George W. Bush's plan to send 21,500 additional troops to Iraq, Lieberman said the proposed increase in the Pentagon's budget for next fiscal year will squeeze funding for critical domestic programs.

"I think we have to start thinking about a war on terrorism tax," the independent Connecticut lawmaker said. "I mean people keep saying we're not asking a sacrifice of anybody but our military in this war and some civilians who are working on it."

"When you put together the (Pentagon) budget and the Homeland Security budgets, we need to ask people to help us in a way that they know when they pay more it will go for their security," he said during a Senate panel hearing on the defense budget request.

Bush on Monday asked Congress to approve $700 billion in new military spending and to curb many domestic programs. The request includes $245 billion for the Iraq and Afghanistan wars between now and late 2008.

If Congress approves the war funding, the United States will have spent $661.9 billion on combat in Iraq, Afghanistan and related activities.

Increased defense spending since 2001 has come amid tax cuts that the Bush administration says were critical to keeping the U.S. economy strong after the September 11 attacks.

How about a 'War on Drugs' tax while we're at it. Bush is out of control.

4) We need a smaller, less-intrusive government.

You know, it occurs to me that if we'd spent the trillion or so dollars squandered in the Middle East on fossil fuel alternative technology development instead, we'd be well on our way toward oil independence and disengagement from that side of the planet instead of locked in this deadly, never-ending embrace.

I guess if they called it the Gas Tax everyone would be opposed to it.

It would be perfectly fair to tax assholes like Haliburton - they've made the profits from the invasion, now it's payback time.

Haliburton pays taxes on its profits.

But it can pay more. Companies like Haliburton made profit from the "war on terrorism" remember, ordinary people back home didn't.

Idiots would tax companies into nonexistence. No profits no companies. No companies no products. Hilary says she wants to "Take" Exxon Mobil's profits and do something, probably buy a stronger vibrator. Pension funds all over America trembled......Not. Populist claptrap doesn't scare many people here any more. Venezuelans will find out soon but Americans will only get lessons at a distance.

So who do you think should pay the tax if not the people who made profit from the war?

Looks like the venezuelans have already found out - better education, better standards of living and their energy supplies not being robbed by foreign corporations giving backhanders to corrupt government officials.

Well welcome to communism diecommie. I guess that the state should decide what is best for us and not us. I guess that taxation has nothing to do with the control of the economy to you?

Are you an anarchist? Because even a minarchist state decides what's best for us.

Why should I pay a tax for something that I don't support and isn't helping me at all? Don't call me nuts when I say that this nutcase and his administration want us to be enslaved in their little system. America is turning into something that few will have seen coming. Wait until the taxes grow and grow. Wait for the roadblocks checking for your papers. Wait for all of your rights and liberties to disappear. Then, after it's too late, let's all stand up for what America was. He will get his tax. Enough people out there still support this war and the future wars to come. And when money is to be made by companies such as Haliburton (cheney) and Chevron (C. Rice) this tax will come around. It will be passed in the dark of the night when America is under another false attack. Does anyone remember how Bush/Cheney/crew got their Patriot Act passed? Wasn't it at 4am under a false anthrax threat?

That will be great if they call this tax the "War on Terrorism tax", then I'll know for sure which tax to refuse to pay.

Just because im "anti commie" doesnt mean im against any form of taxation. This isnt an economic issue imo, its a national defense issue, and I do believe that electeted representatives have the right to tax for national security issues.

no possible way such a tax could seriously be passed, not here, not now.. that is...unless the ruling class does not care one iota about the opinions of the people for whom the government "works" and also if the majority of that body consists of retards.

shit.
