Reply to lakefingers about the morals behind seeking out truth
    #5557855 - 04/26/06 08:57 AM (17 years, 9 months ago)

This was in the proof of the pudding thread but it was off-topic so I created this thread.

Thank you for replying. You are right.
To better answer your question of,
"What moral convictions motivate us to take up logical and scientific arms, for 'the real'?"

One moral conviction that causes people to battle in pursuit of the truth is empathy for the human race and distaste of empty morals. There are many ideas that people believe as truth that are based on superstitions.

For example, I dislike that my mother is catholic; catholics have a view of the world that I liken to a fairy tale. Much of what is mortally essential to my mother is completely unimportant to me. I feel strongly that my mother has no reason to be so against pro-choice, pre-marital sex, not going to church, gays, etc. The problems with these issues are not real. God doesn't send gay people to hell like my mom thinks. Going to church on sunday is not "the most important in life" like my mom always tells me.

I search for the truth. At one time it was to overcome my catholic worldview. In the future it will be to protect those I love from losing their minds to fairy tales.
