Unmitigated Reality?

Anyone here ever come too close to the beauty of the divine so as to be scorched?

Huxley:

Confronted by a chair which looked like the Last Judgment - or, to be more accurate, by a Last Judgment which, after a long time and with considerable difficulty, I recognized as a chair - I found myself all at once on the brink of panic. This, I suddenly felt, was going too far. Too far, even though the going was into intenser beauty, deeper significance. The fear, as I analyze it in retrospect, was of being overwhelmed, of disintegrating under a pressure of reality greater than a mind, accustomed to living most of the time in a cosy world of symbols, could possibly bear. The literature of religious experience abounds in references to the pains and terrors overwhelming those who have come, too suddenly, face to face with some manifestation of the Mysterium tremendum. In theological language, this fear is due to the in- compatibility between man's egotism and the divine purity, between man's self-aggravated separateness and the infinity of God. Following Boehme and William Law, we may say that, by unregenerate souls, the divine Light at its full blaze can be apprehended only as a burning, purgatorial fire. An almost identical doctrine is to be found in The Tibetan Book of the Dead, where the departed soul is described as shrinking in agony from the Pure Light of the Void, and even from the lesser, tempered Lights, in order to rush headlong into the comforting darkness of selfhood as a reborn human being, or even as a beast, an unhappy ghost, a denizen of hell. Anything rather than the burning brightness of unmitigated Reality - anything!

'Mysterium tremendum', eh? I love that. That's great, I like the Tibetan Book of the Dead bit as well. I've certainly been baffled by the glory of the divine, but I find that all sense of self or reason or mind has fled in terror from the purity of the virtue of undifferentiated or 'pure' reality, wherein all things are one. Maybe that's not what you're talking about, though...

To know too much?

It is easy to know too much and when you do, things get boring quick. For what is interesting about the same thing interacting with itself, ad infinitum? Unless that thing be infinitely separated... What a complex game, one I would enjoy playing,  :wink:.

My illusory sense of self simply got past such a trap by realizing it needed to identify with the vast reality which it cannot itself contain in order to continue itself further. Experiences where reality has been more directly perceived did not induce panic or a sense of mortal threat within this sense of self, but rather, the experience effectively served to purify the illusory sense of self so that it could still exist and directly perceive reality.

The sense of self downsized considerably as its obstructions of a direct perception of reality were eliminated, but the remainder of it became heightened in the sense that it reflects reality - the awareness of this making it much more potent and effective. :thumbup:

It's odd you should post about this, because just yesterday I felt like I experienced God after intense awareness of my thoughts and myself.

I just posted in my journal about it last night.

When I experienced this, it was as if my true self came and took control over me, and observed me fully, and I saw myself, the whole of me, not just thought by thought but the person I was in reality. Then I realized that this observer of myself was me, but it was God. I was so frightened and confused, and I had to break away from what I was experiencing immediately. I don't even know what to think of it now.

What a great post Swami! :thumbup: All the bliss of the Universe is contained in each manifestation of reality. I have come close to this a few times, but only for a fleeting instant. Maybe I was protecting myself.

Have you ever had this experience?

I think swami is putting you on. Through some random Aldous Huxley passage which is elegantly written, it is still philosophical fluff. Much like John Edwards hooks his victims with vague, commonly human vices/virtues which makes them peep up and blab.... not that the end result is the same, but IMO you guys have been baited by the wish to be connected to a deeper understanding through nothing more than philosophical fluff.

That's me all right, Mr. Philosophical fluff. :tongue: Weather Swami is trolling or not is hard to tell for sure. You might be right though, he usually only does one post when he's doing that. But I could care less. I read lots of Alan and find him powerful and honest. Weather he is right, you are right, or anyone is right, is beyond my abilities to know. I just follow my intuition and personal experience.

i wasnt calling all of the other posts philosophical fluff, just swami's. It was so vague that whatever you talked about (spiritually) would be on-topic. So, while Im sure that many of you poured out a passionate and real post, I can just see Swami with a big SEG.
