Diabetes and Shrooms

Hi all,
I'm curious to know if anyone who posts here is an insulin dependant diabetic and wether they've had any problems ingesting 'shrooms?

One of my best tripping buddies is a diabetic and he's never had any problems nor has he noticed any weird things happening to his BSL while tripping.

Nice to hear.

I think Im gunna start with a low dose like .05 or so and then test my blood sugar at the peak just to see how safe it is for myself.

But its nice to hear that other diabetics have been able to trip freely. Anyone know anything about LSA or (HWBW) and diabetes? or blood sugar levels?

Hey Dude,

I'm a diabetic and am insulin dependent and have tripped several times without any diabetes related complications.

That's just me though! I'm no doctor and can't tell you if it is safe across the board. My only advice is to have a "babysitter" around who knows about diabetes and can help take care of you. I also have read a lot of trip reports on this site about people having such intense trips that they completely lose track of reality and their conciousness separates itself from the physical plane. I.E. They have no idea what their body is doing while their mind is off in the stratosphere. I've never taken enough shrooms for this to happen for the obvious reason that I have to at least be coherent enough to test my bloodsugar and know how to respond if it is low or high. I would advise starting with small doses and then working your way out to where you are comfortable.

I have found that being responsible with diabetes and being responsible with shrooms I am just fine.

Again, I am no doctor and can't really tell you if there might be some adverse reaction. I can't stress that enough!

I have type 1 diabetes, and mushrooms have given me no trouble. I have also taken LSA, but from morning glories. I had no problems with that either. One thing about that is, there is a good chance you might throw up, and if you chased it with orange juice or had food in your stomach before hand, and you've taken your insulin, you could go low pretty quickly. Its good to hear that youre a Type 1 like me and that tripping is an OK BlueFrost.
I have yet to go a trippin since i was diagnosed. Have you ever pricked your finger and tested your level while you were the plants?

I just wanna keep this post going, to obtain for information for myself and other diabetics who come looking on this site for advice. Anyone who has info on diabetes and shrooms post!!!

I think its really hypoglycemia that people need to worry about. Shrooms usually lower blood sugar and blood pressure levels. I had one extremely scary experience where I unexpectedly blacked out multiple times during a shroom trip. I remember a doctor telling me once that I had low blood pressure. I still dont know why these blackouts happend but Im guessing it has to do with my blood pressure or blood sugar.

Type 1 diabetes is like hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia combined. Most people's bodies produce insulin, which somehow allows the sugar in your blood to enter your cells and be converted to energy. Type 1's don't produce insulin, so if a type 1 doesn't inject insulin for a while, the sugar in your blood will keep climbing out of control. Some of the sugar will come out when you urinate, but not enough to regulate the sugar in the blood. All this sugar in the blood for a long time means poor circulation, mainly because the blood is just filled with sugar and it won't flow like normal. I think. If a type 1 injects too much, his or her blood sugar will drop too low, and I don't really remember how that part works, but I know what it feels like.

In response to natu's question, I'm not entirely sure what you meant, but if you are asking about weed, i've had no problem with that either. I've checked my blood sugar after smoking, but I didn't pay attention to if it changed. Ill do a trial test and write down what happens in the next couple of days. One thing you should know about mind altering substances in general is that I've had times where I've gone low and not realized it until my blood sugar was dangerously low. Something I do to prevent this is eating a little more than necessary before taking something I haven't taken before. The doctor has probably told you that you shouldn't drink because you are a diabetic, but I've never heard of a doctor telling any patient under 21 that it is fine to drink. I've never gone low while drinking. It doesnt do as much to your blood sugar as they would like you to think. Just make sure you eat more than usual before hand, because chances are if you are pretty drunk you are not going to remember to check your blood. Try to have something to eat with you when you are under the influence of anything.

I've never gone low while drinking. It doesnt do as much to your blood sugar as they would like you to think. Just make sure you eat more than usual before hand, because chances are if you are pretty drunk you are not going to remember to check your blood. Actually Blue Frost alcohol is definitely something that affects most diabetics blood sugar (and everyone else's for that matter).

Most drinks have lots of sugar and/or carbohydrates, especially beer (one single bud has about as many carbs as a coke). But after a few hours of drinking, the opposite will happen and blood sugars can dip rapidly during the night after a night of drinking. The reason this happens is because one of the functions of the liver is to release a steady amount of glucose into the blood at all times. But if you've had a lot to drink, the liver will become too busy processing the alcohol out of your blood to produce this sugar. This is why people with serious hangovers often crave large amounts of food, and is why diabetics who take insulin really need to be careful and monitor their blood sugar even several hours after they have stopped drinking.

If you are diabetic and you drink, know that alcohol will often send your blood sugar on a roller coaster ride. Keep an eye out for sugary drinks and know that woodchuck and hard apple cider is not for you, unless you want to be chasing every drink with an injection.

Weed and shrooms don't mess directly with blood sugar in the way that alcohol does (as far as I know), but I definetely agree with your statement "One thing you should know about mind altering substances in general is that I've had times where I've gone low and not realized it until my blood sugar was dangerously low." So watch out for those as well.

Thanks for the info gluke, that had never been explained to me before. I hadn't thought it would affect me long after drinking, I was only worried about it while I was drunk. I tend to stay away from fruity drinks anyways, and I am somewhat of a lightweight, so I rarely drink as much as a normal person would. This could possibly be why I've never noticed any changes in my blood sugar levels. I haven't really had anyone to ask questions like this, I don't know anyone else who has type 1. A few years back when I visited my sister at college for siblings weekend, my mom called ahead of time and told her to buy low calorie beer for me.

Yeah, GLukes right on the money with the drinking situation. Stay away from the spirits and TRY not to binge. It's almost impossible to check your bsl's when your pissed!! Over here in Aust. the major brewer CUB have released a carbo free beer called Pure Blond, tastes ok I guess but I'm at the stage now where I'm pretty much over boozing and all the problems (social and physical) that it causes. Dont recall to many bashings involving a bunch of stoners or trippers.
Just was thinking that maybe I'd freak about having to put a foreign body (needle) into my system while dialling on 'shrooms. I'm guessing the guys here have had to do it at some stage and was wondering how that went for them?

  Yeah I know what you mean, I've been taking 4 a day for 3 years. Some people have a phobia of needles. It would suck so much harder for them if they got diabetes lol
