    #4035058 - 04/09/05 05:31 PM (18 years, 11 months ago)

All of the herbs mentioned in this post are completely non-toxic.
Even though most of these herbs are completely safe, I suggest that you research each herb independently before you decide to start taking them. Some herbs may interact negatively with certain prescriptions.. please research each herb before you decide to take it, and check with your physician and/or pharmacist for any possible harmful reactions if you have any concerns.

Herbs are a lot cheaper than the doctor..
But if you can find a store that sells them in raw form, usually in powder..they are usually pretty cheap. Much cheaper to make your own capsules/teas. Even cheaper to grow.

Fenugreek seed is commonly used as a digestive aid to promote digestion.

Thyme can also be considered for some men as a mild, rarely used aphrodisiac (believe it or not).

I notice you posted 2 combinations for each problem. Does this have any significance?

It depends on a couple of things: the issue you are treating, the severity of the issue, the potency of the herbs, etc..

Generally speaking a standard dose would be 2-4 capsules a day.. there are two standard sized of capsules- size 0 and 00. Obviously the best and easiest way for most people is to just take a pill, so you can either buy the herbs pre-mixed in capsules, or get the herbs and capsulate them yourself (cheaper).

I don't weigh them out or anything..I usually just grind any herbs that need it, mix them up in equal parts and pack into capsules. It's no rocket science. Taking too much herbs wont hurt you.. it will probably help more if anything. Usually all you need is a tablespoon or so of each powdered herb (depending on the amount you are making). Moderation is key like anything. Of course, people with serious conditions should consult their physician before starting to take a bunch of herbs, and pregnant woman also. Many herbs are completely safe and even helpful for pregnancy, but some are not. For example if a hemophiliac takes ginseng... ginseng increase the blood flow so if they started to bleed it could be even worse than normal and harder to coagulate. But besides some rare, non-life-threatening exceptions.. all these herbs are completely safe.

The only herb mentioned that you really should watch out for is lobelia.. it wont hurt you.. but a high dose is an emetic, and it will make you vomit.. which is good for cleaning out the system from one orifice :smirk: A low dose (1-2 grams) is a powerful relaxant.

The other preferred method of ingestion for herbs is in teas. Obviously you are a little more restricted here.. not all herbs taste very good so are better suited for capsules. But many herbs make a fine tea such as peppermint, catnip, alfalfa, strawberry leaves, dandelion, spearmint, golden seal etc.. Basically just take 1 or 2 teaspooons of the herb per quart of water and simmer (DO NOT BOIL) for 20 minutes. Strain, drink. Herb infusion.

For external applications.. you have poultices, which is taking herbs chopped, blended, grated, or powdered.. and applying them to external wounds/swellings. Using powdered herbs you mix with mineral water and then olive oil and apply to wound. Using fresh herb you blend in blender with mineral water and pour mixture into a soft, clean cloth, apply to skin.. cover outer part with plastic wrap to keep from soiling.

Then you have ointment/salves which is herbs mixed into a natural vaseline product or lanolin. And a few other methods.

But the most common and easiest for ingestion is definitely powdered herbs in capsules and teas.

Not really other than the fact that it gives someone more options if they can't get a certain herb. It also gives you an idea of what herbs work good together. But mainly it is like that because those are the combinations that have been shown to work the best together for treating that particular problem. And some combinations work better at treating different aspects of a disease - look at pancreas combinations. But every combination is effective... so you have options.

Please beware! When taking these combinations if you are on any concurrent prescription medications!

For example:
Taking St. John's Wort when you're on some pretty important prescrpition drugs. St John's Wort stimulates cytochrome liver enzymes (ones that are involved in drug detoxification) to proliferate and essentially eliminate drugs from your body faster. Specifically drugs you might need.

Many patients with hypoactive thyroid have found their Thyroxin levels plummet when they took St John's Wort. Other such cases have been mentioned with other drugs too.

So find out about your drugs and perhaps consult your doctor if you're that worried. But if you take medication that you definitely need, like Thyroxin and other stuff. Find out!

Many other plant herbals medicines could have simliar effects, or potentiate drugs you're already taking. So look into it and be careful!

Otherwise, enjoy the herbs!

Thanks for the warning neuro.. I know that some herbs can interact negatively with certain prescriptions, which is why I recommended that everyone research the herbs before trying them out... and if you have any concerns make sure you discuss it with a physician and/or a pharmacist before taking them.

Indeed..although isn't it just the root that is said to contain toxins? Which part of the plant is it that is being recommended? I'm pretty sure the foliage is supposed to be relatively harmless.

Mandrake is oftentimes associated with something of a trance-like drug which in high doses can cause delusions, etc. I believe the part in question is the root (which is typically the most potent part of the plant), but I may be mistaken.

Shroomism ~ I just wanted to say "thanks" for posting all the info here and say "well done" too. Peace.

Ah my mistake.. I forgot about mandrake..

What about goldenseal must be taken with TLC? I've never heard any negative effects from it.

And you are all welcome

Goldenseal has a warning that I've read for two reasons:
Pregnant women should avoid it as it is reported to cause complications. Also Michael Tierra says to leave it alone if hypertension (high blood pressure) is in place.
Chinese herbology says leave it alone for individuals with "internal cold, deficient conditions." See "The Way of Herbs," a fav of mine.

Avoid long term use with goldenseal to keep from destroying intestinal flora. paraphrased from "The Male Herbal".
