Canada and pollution
    #4823917 -

What a filthy country! As I pointed out in a few posts a couple years back, Canada hasn't a hope in hell of even coming close to meeting the standards set by the Kyoto Accords. To be fair, the odds of any country meeting their assigned standards are pretty low, but even so.

Canada 'among worst polluters'
Tuesday, October 18, 2005; Posted: 1:14 p.m. EDT (17:14 GMT)

OTTAWA (AP) -- A new study by a leading environmental group ranks Canada among the worst polluting nations in the industrialized world, according to 29 key environmental indicators.

The study, conducted at Simon Fraser University and released by the David Suzuki Foundation, rates Canada 28th among 30 countries in the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development.

It puts Canada dead last among the 30 countries in nuclear waste and carbon monoxide production, and 29th in per capita water consumption.

European countries such as Sweden, Switzerland, Denmark and Germany ranked at the top of the environmental list, while Canada, Belgium and the United States were at the bottom.

Suzuki, a geneticist and one of Canada's most respected environmentalists, said North Americans take their natural resources for granted while most European countries have dealt with environmental crises for years. He said environmental issues need to take a prominent place in the next federal election, likely early next year.

The study was conducted by an independent team of multidisciplinary researchers at Simon Fraser University, under the direction of Dr. Thomas Gunton.

"Our research found Canada's environmental performance to be surprisingly low," said Gunton. "Canada lags behind in almost every performance indicator."

Canada's greenhouse gas emissions are two times higher, and major smog-causing air pollutants are two-to-three times higher than the average for other industrialized countries, according to the report by the international environment watchdog group.

"The ability of other high-income countries, such as Sweden, to achieve much lower levels of pollution shows it can be done," Gunton said in a news release. "There's no excuse -- all it requires is a strong commitment from government."

The study found Canada has shown no improvement over the last decade. Canada's rank today is the same as it was in 1992: 28th out of 30.

"The Canada we see in this report does not reflect the one we hold in our hearts," said Suzuki. "Canadians expect more and they expect better," Suzuki said. "We should be outraged that we are among the worst in the industrialized world."

What actions (if any) do you believe the Canadian government should take to change this situation?

Well obviously we (not JUST Canada) in the Western World still have quite a way to go before we catch up with Europe in terms of environment.

Nice to know we aren't actually last place, though. We've got one European country below us (Belgium, at 29) and of course the USA sitting down there at dead last.

As to what specific actions the govt can take...I'm not sure. I think signing on to Kyoto was at least a start, as it shows willingness to sacrifice economic prosperity to move towards ecological prosperity.

Conclusion
Canada?s poor environmental performance could be caused by a number of factors including geography, climate, economic structure, and poor public policy. Their relative significance in explaining Canada?s performance awaits further study. However, independent evaluations by the OECD8 and the Canadian Commissioner of Environment and Sustainable Development9 document that poor public policy is a major factor explaining Canada?s performance.

I don't know what is wrong with Canada. Just when you think their country couldn't be any shittier, this comes out. They need a wake up call.

Chemical Valley in Sarnia is about 20 miles away from me. I always hear warnings over the radio to stay indoors when something over there malfunctions. It is quite scary. I'm just happy I don't have a house right across the river from it.

You can see right where the checmical plants start.

(Btw, this is not a shot at Canada. I know there are many places much worse in the US. I'm just pointing out a very bad place I am acquainted with.)

Ahhh my beautiful shirat town.. We don't get warnings to stay indoors too often, that usually happens to the indian reserve stratigicly placed right in the chemical valley.....

I can't wait to move out of this shitty town.

The pollution from Chicago effects us more than our own though Redstorm.

I think the phrase goes "pot calling the kettle black"

Yes, Canada has quite a ways to go, but to say something like

"I don't know what is wrong with Canada. Just when you think their country couldn't be any shittier, this comes out. They need a wake up call."

when you live in the country at the bottom of the list is such good comedy that I couldn't resist pointing it out. Thanks man

On topic:

The quote I posted earlier pretty much sums up my opinion on the topic. I have to admit I was surprised at Canada's rank. I think we can do an awful lot better, and should be. The main problem is definitely a lack of policy and public debate over most of the items used in the ranking.

Come on Trendy, just because its cool to bring the U.S into every thread doesn't mean you have to. This thread is about Canada. I made an observation about Canada. There are plenty (just about all) of threads that deal with JUST U.S bashing. This thread is about how disgusting Canada has become.

I think the phrase goes "pot calling the kettle black"

How so? I never trumpted the U.S environmental record.

You don't have to, it's still irony. Forgive the example, but it's like a murderer calling out a thief for his criminal behavior.

I wouldn't say Canada has become this "disgusting", as you put it. On the contrary, I think we've made significant strides towards a better environment. What this study shows us isn't that we're on the wrong track completely, but that we still have quite a ways to go and a lot to learn from most other developed countries.

Re: Canada and pollution [Re: Phred]

This is not a surprise to me at all. There was a lot of information out there already, such as water consumption and energy use, which put Canada at the back of the line.

This report pieced it all together... and suddenly everyone is frightened.

Number one, this report was done by the Suzuki Foundation. It is a well-known fact that David Suzuki has been hounding the Canadian government for years on a number of issues.

While Suzuki himself I think is an honorable (though very arrogant and sometimes annoying) person, he is misguided on a number of issues.

Nuclear energy. He is completely anti nuclear in almost every way. Consider that Canada and Niger are the foremost producers of Uranium, IN THE WORLD. So do we use much of it? NOPE NOPE NOPE.

David Suzuki is dead against putting nuclear waste kilometers down into the Precambrian Shield, one of the oldest and most stable geological foundations in the world. This is a big huge contradiction because they let miners dump oil, hydraulic fuel and all kinds of shit in these mines in the Precambrian Shield.

You might thing this is a dumb idea but nothing can get out of the shield. It is too thick; it would take millions of years for anything to migrate out. Let's not forget the very uranium that produces nuclear waste is found exclusively IN THE PRECAMBRIAN SHEILD.

The Suzuki Foundation and David Suzuki are different entities, of course.

But what do we use instead of nuclear? While it varies from province to province, on average we are using COAL the most. Coal releases more radiation directly into the atmosphere than any nuclear power plant ever has (in Canada).

We also use a lot of energy, partly because the cost of energy is very low, and partly because there is no push to conserve.

I have worked in mining, oil and forestry (as a tree planter) I can see directly the cost of these projects on the environment.

Fueling the environmental pollution/destruction is corporate friendly governments that allow tax exemptions and other stuff and practically beg industry to exploit the land any economical way they can think of.

Case in point Fort McMoney, Alberta. You can see the damage done there from space.

We also have a lot of the very things we are abusing: We have a lot of old growth forest, we have a lot of fish, and we have a lot of minerals and oil. We have an extremely high amount of fresh water.

Because as a society we value money so much (in that respect we are no different than Americans) we take advantage of these opportunities. Those rich loggers with the million-dollar homes on the lake, you and I admire them.

It's sad because it was once a beautiful land (that wasn't even ours to take). Though it still is very beautiful, just brutally raped.

Bottom line is that they are right about environmental policy. Dead right. That has to change.

But you also have to consider the bias of the Suzuki Foundation.
