oh they didn't make me fork over the cash at the ER, they said do you have insurance? I say no... they get the evil look in their eyes and laugh
two weeks later I get a bill for $1500, then when I don't pay it immediately, calls every day or two, urging me to pay, when I tell them I don't have the money for a few weeks, they go and destroy my credit rating. My credit is still fucked from that bill.

Well hey, at least you didn't have to "wait in line" and possibly die while you do so...as some here like to say happens in Canada :smirk:

You miss the point completely. Unless you live in Alberta, not only do you pay federal income tax, you also pay provincial income tax. Not only that, but on just about everything else you buy (including services), you pay provincial sales tax and federal sales tax. I note you forgot to factor in the fifteen per cent PST and GST on the cost of the Ford Focus. That's another CDN $3600.00, or ten more weeks added to your total.

Then there are EI deductions, CPP deductions, OHIP (or other provincial health care) deductions, compulsory workman's compensation deductions (for many), compulsory union dues deductions (for many) and probably others I have forgotten.

The figures provided at the link are accurate. A Canadian earning US $18,000 a year loses just under 50% of his gross pay to government taxes of one sort or another if he lives in Ontario. if he lives in Quebec, he loses just over 50% of his gross pay.

But an American earning roughly double that amount loses 28% of his gross pay (on average -- it varies slightly depending on the State of residence. Massachussetts residents get hit harder than Wyoming residents). The increase from 28% of gross to 50% of gross is an increase of 79%. And that's on a guy making just US $18,000. Hardly 'wealthy" or even for that matter "lower middle class" income.

There are nice things about Canada, but the stranglehold the government has on Canadians is not one of them. And the disastrous health care system is definitely not one of them.

My father did. To be fair, he might have died even if they had started the chemotherapy as quickly as would have been the case in the US. He was in his early seventies and didn't live a very active lifestyle.

But we'll never know.

Unless you live in Alberta, not only do you pay federal income tax, you also pay provincial income tax. Not only that, but on just about everything else you buy (including services), you pay provincial sales tax and federal sales tax.

Are there not state income taxes in the US (most states, anyway)? Are there not state sales taxes (though, granted, they are not anywhere near 15%)?

Then there are EI deductions, CPP deductions, OHIP (or other provincial health care) deductions, compulsory workman's compensation deductions (for many), compulsory union dues deductions (for many) and probably others I have forgotten.

I did not factor these in because I was speaking only of federal income tax. I noted so in my post, perhaps you overlooked it. However if you look at the two examples of paycheques I have posted (shroomism's and mine) you will see that those in the US also pay for these type of things. In fact it looks (again, from the paycheque info posted) like they pay significantly more for these additional taxes than we do up here.

Oh, and incidentally, there is no "OHIP tax" that comes out of our pay here (yet). The only deductions on my paystub are from CPP and EI (other than income tax, of course, or the deductions for my drug/dental plan). Although apparently my province (Ontario) is adding a "Ontario Health Premium" to my taxes this year. I won't have to pay anything at all for it because I don't make enough...but for those who do it will be somewhere between $300 and $900. No, I am not happy about this.

You miss the point completely. When I refer to taxes, I don't refer just to federal income tax. I refer to all taxes. This is the whole point of "Tax Freedom Day" calculations.

Yes, it is true that in the US they have to pay state income tax (at a much lower rate than provincial income tax, by the way). And it is true that in some states there is also a sales tax on certain items (FAR lower than the PST/GST combination which in Canada is levied on not just items but on SERVICES too. You get a brake job for your car and you pay the sales tax not just on your new brake pads, but on the mechanic's labor charges as well). But all those things are factored into the Tax Freedom Day calculations for each country.

Oh, and incidentally, there is no "OHIP tax" that comes out of our pay here (yet).

Odd. There was in 1987. The employee paid half, the employer paid half. Perhaps your employer pays all of it as a benefit. I know that back in 1987 some employers were starting to do that as a company benefit. Or perhaps the law changed since I left, and now the government FORCES all employers to pay all of it, in which case the employee still loses because there is that much less money available for the company to use for pay raises or other benefits.

You may be content living in a country where the government confiscates quite literally half of a paltry annual income of US $18,000, and a lot more than that if you make a reasonable income. Hey, that's less than what Denmark or Italy or Sweden confiscates, after all.

Pinky, what are some examples of countries with very little taxation?
Cause most of the ones I hear about with high taxes (Canada, Sweden, France, Belgium, New Zeland, blah blah blah) have pretty high living standards, good education, well rated health care, etc. And the people are pretty content (France aside).
I'm not trying to say one way is better than another. I figure both ways can work. What are some examples from the other side?

Yes, that was quite obvious from the start. I, on the other hand, was only talking about federal income tax (as I said, in my post).

Odd. There was in 1987. The employee paid half, the employer paid half. Perhaps your employer pays all of it as a benefit.

No pay stub, from any job I have ever had has shown any deductions for OHIP. I'm fairly certain that OHIP money comes from provincial tax, as well as some federal tax which the feds have to give to each province. As I said, this year Ontario is introducing an OHIP premium. I know that some other provinces (Alberta?) already pay health care premiums with their taxes, but not all provinces have this yet. Unfortunately mine is bringing it in...again, not something I am happy about.

I'm content to live in a country where the standard of living is high and I have access to public health care 24/7. I've said it before, and I'm sure I'll have to say it again: I don't mind paying taxes as long as I get these services in return. I would like to see a lot of reform in the Canadian government, though, as there are many things to improve upon.

Then again, no one ever claimed Canada was perfect...just a nice place to live

Things changed, I guess. Every job I ever had I paid OHIP deductions. Whether you pay it as a separate payroll deduction or it gets tacked on to provincial income tax, you still pay it.

I never said we didn't pay it

Again: I don't mind paying it...I happen to enjoy what I get out of it quite a bit. Though, again, I would like to see some reform...I know that far too much of the tax dollars we DO pay are squandered on useless bureaucracy. I'm sure we could maintain most of the services we have with less taxes...if we could just clean the system up and get rid of the needless money holes!
