like Russia you say? haha, that's not such a bad thing then considering the stiffling humid hot heat of today, it's awful!

I wouldn't mind living off the land, I'd gladly give it all up. I just need to recruit a few people to do it with!

What has been said in this thread is that the melting of the ice caps will not raise the sea level in any signifigant manner.

I hope you're not inferring this from my post where I said that the salinity of the oceans will not significantly change if the polar ice caps melt.

While I stand by my statement re salinity (specific gravity), the mean sea level itself will very definitely and drastically change if all the polar ice in Antarctica melted. The rise would be on the order of 60 meters (200 feet). That would be catastrophic and would put many coastal cities underwater. It would put virtually my entire home state, Florida, underwater too. My home is right at sea level!

That said, this whole thing is an issue of conservation. At current rates, the oceans will rise about 50 centimeters (20 inches) in the next 100 years. This isn't going to bother us much, but if we care about future generations, we should try to do something about it.

Although the rising oceans aren't an immediate problem, their warming is. A staggering amount of energy is required to raise the average temperature of the ocean by one degree. That extra energy causes a cascade of secondary effects that significantly affects the ecosystem. One of those effects that directly affects us is the creation and intensity of hurricanes.

Last year was very scary and directly related to the warming oceans. This year has already started with a bang and expected to be another doozy!

Well, for starters, we need to stop electing anti-environment presidents like Bush.

Also, we need to start subsidizing industries in developing countries that are contributing to the problem.

Why subsidize? I'll tell you.

It's not fair for us to ask developing countries to curb their emissions at their expense when we (the US and other developed countries) didn't do it during our developmental stage 100 years ago.

This isn't going to be cheap, but if we care about the legacy we leave those who come after us, it has to be done.

Nei, I was referring to Wiccan_Seeker's comments. She said that the melting of the North Pole's ice caps would not raise the sea level. I always personally thought that water filled less surface area in solid form than as liquid, and that, coupled with the melting of ice and snow that is on land, would definitely raise the sea level considerably, not to mention the other ecological factors that would change. :wink:

maybe laziness, maybe a feeling of "what can I do?"  All that is assumptions though.  WE can sit around and talk about this forever, but talk only goes so far.  We have a lot of intelligent minds on this board alone, not to mention the number of people in the world.  If most people do their part, then we can make this world an interesting a wonderful place for our kids to grow up in.

on a global scale many places will receive precipitation because of a heating, but local environments on land will be in the midst of droughts, which will result in more and more conflicts on getting water resources.  Farmers are going to have a tough time as humans can only use an estimated 3 percent of the entire earth for farming.  this is already happening in australia.  sure they get rain, but not in the right areas.  farms were set up in specific regions because of the great soil, because of the amount of rain given to that area.  as we effect the environment at a very fast rate, these places aren't recieving the rain attention they need. this is just one of the major problems!

what can we do? for you US folks, tell your representatives climate protection is important to you. Your elected officials make critical decisions in your name that either hurt or help. In the US Congress and in the statehouse, your representatives need to hear that you want action!

what about jobs? what kind of jobs out there can help get this ball rolling?

jsut trying to get ideas rolling :smile:.  the main point of the thread was just awareness and to get a discussion going, which I'm happy it has!  i think a lot of us collectively can do something, but first we have to come together for our children's safety and our own.

We got eaten alive by mosquitos but didn't notice til the next day. I stepped on some glass while wading in the swamp and cut my foot open, didn't bother me til the next day either....yeah it was a good time, ended the night by buying some liquor for minors and drinking nips and going to he diner and eating chicken fingers, and then I went home and went to bed.

What about a new source of producing energy? That didnt contribute to smog or pollution at all for that matter?

What would you do then? You want something, and what will you do with it... How is one to apply it to our society, as well as the environment?

Say you had an idea, where would you go, who would you talk to, how could you organize the case of global warming and pollution ny fossil fuel/polluting industries, vs. a new and innovative technology that had no foot hold in the market?

Who is to buy this technology... The question is, is it in our hands? Should it be? Should it come from an individual, as a means for benefiting all of humanity? OR is it to be controlled and limited to a select few who wish to go against the interests of the human planet/eco system?

IMO these are some of the hardest question to answer.

Newer, cleaner technologies are (almost always) more expensive than older, dirty ones, otherwise, market forces would change the energy landscape. The only way to effect these changes is the way California does it: legislated them for the greater good.

Dirty technologies should be tariffed and clean technologies given tax subsidies so the clean technologies have a level playing field on which to compete.

California currently has the most far-reaching electric car rules in the US, requiring automakers to deliver thousands of battery-powered or hybrid vehicles to showrooms every year.

This has to start with our elected officials.
