Its sure that the melting of the poles will have an affect on the climate. Perhaps the streams in oceans change.
And its no doubt, that humans (since the industrial revolution)accelerate the reduction of the plurality of fauna and flora (live) on this planet.
If they 'only' accelerate some natural climate changes, might not be the question, as evolution has enough troubles to fill in the gap, that human destructiveness has cut into the 'life-sphere' habitat of this planet.

Time is running out for life habitat earth. Some humans force this as purpose.

I don't see any problem with all the ice melting, there may be really hot temperatues in certain areas and we will still see snow in other areas, maybe less snow? ... Only thing that is happening is the water level is rising, that's all.

Peace,

It is still not sure wheather this is due to human polution or a natural cycle of ice age and warm age

From the available evidence, there is no longer any doubt that the majority of the warming observed in the last 100 years is due to human influences.

Well if there is vast climate shift it is certain to wipe out many, many people. Less people = easier to control. From that rational why would our government want to prevent it; is it possible they wish to accelerate it?

Interesting fact: US government transports tons of equipment to the north pole. They had a show on history channel that was about ice transport, the guy they interviewed said he transports an enormous amount of equipment in sealed containers at regular intervals to the bases in the north pole. I forget the actual amount but I remember thinking: What the hell are they doing up there that they ship such huge amounts of equipment for?

Shipments of coal to keep warm?

If the ice caps did melt at the north pole, it would open up faster trade routes from land to land between different countries. Sure this is a plus, but for who?

The Ruskies!

Russia's history is pretty much defined by their striving to obtain warm-water ports... if the ice caps melted, they would be closer than ever to having them...

This thread has made me very sad. :frown:

Why are we letting this continue to happen?

I don't want it to melt! the UK would be wiped out wouldn't it?

In my life time!

What has been said in this thread is that the melting of the ice caps will not raise the sea level in any signifigant manner.

However, personally, I would think that the melting of all of the ice and snow that rests on the continent of Antartica might have something to contribute to the sea....

And, of course, the melting of the ice caps is obviously going to have serious ramifications on the world's ecosystems. That much ice just doesn't melt without signfigantly changing other aspects of the insane complexity that is nature, regardless of whether or not the sea level will rise.

First of all, not only are the polar caps melting (which indeed has no impact on sea level), but the continental glaciers are as well (Greenland, Alpes...). In fact, scientists have measured that polar ice caps and continental glaciers are melting at the same rate.

Now Antarctica has the biggest reservoir of continental ice on earth (a volume of about 30 million km^3. Next comes Greenland with 3 million). If temperatures keep rising like they are today, these continental glaciers will melt and sea levels will rise of up to 100 meters in the next hundred years. And knowing how three quarters of human population live between 0 and 25 meters above sea level, well...maybe we should start worrying and take action?

In the same manner, 20,000 years ago, when temperatures were only a few degrees lower than today and when continental glaciers reached their their highest volume (80million km^3), the sea level was 130 meters lower than it is today.

But that's not it! The melting of glaciers isn't the only factor to take into account when considering the raise of sea level.

Its called thermal dilation. Simply put, when water warms up, it's molecules get excited which causes the volume that it occupies to raise.

This phenomenon by itself has caused sea levels to raise by 10cm in the last century, during which the raise of temperature was 0.6 degrees.

In the next century, the temperatures will raise by 2 to 4 degrees. Therefore it is thermal dilation that will be the most important factor in the raising of sea levels.

I volunteer to play guitar. As I am playing guitar right now, I have already accomplished my part towards preventing the melting of the ice caps.

Political leaders need to start to take action.

we can all do little simple things in our own life, but this is relatively useless if only a few are doing anything.

i dunno really...vote for your local ecological party!

People claim they care but they still drive their cars and waste the electricity in their homes!

We have accepted this new method of living over working with nature. We will not give up our lifestyle and go back to living with the ecosystem. I don't know what will make anybody take action, I believe they will have to feel the wrath of mother nature first!

I'm guilty too.

The UK. I think we could be under the same conditions as iceland within the next 20 years. The UK will be like living in Russia!

Yes, I agree, this is the solution to global warming. Although I would have to include, LSD, salvia, DMT, Ketamine, and especially E. Of course there are others.  :mushroom2:
