perlite in casing?

i was wondering if u could put perlite as a bottom casing layer for humidification purposes. if this is a good idea then how much should be used?

use peat or vermiculite or coco-coir!

Nope. Verm would be better on the bottom. 1/2"-1" is fine. Not really needed at all, but if you really want a bottom casing layer. That doesnt humidify the casing, that has to be cone from the top, but it can help give excess water somewhere to go..

yeah i wouldn't recommend perlite in a casing, it's been stated that verm/coco-coir/jiffy mix, etc. provide the perfect mircoclimate for mushroom formation and perlite just wicks up too much water to quickly (from how i understand it), GL

Dont bother with the bottom layer...I've never done one...unneeded.

Ofcourse, perlite is much better then NOTHING. But try them otherthings 1st.

I dont know about that...I think perilite will let water pool up at the bottom since it doesnt absrob water well. That could lead to contam problems and the rotting of the underpart of the casing.

That said, feel free to experiment if you arent worried about getting mushrooms...try out the perlite..it could actually perform well..I just really dont think so. Theres a reason most dont use a bottom casing layer and theres a reason that almost everyone who does, doesnt use perlite. I've heard of it being done before though so.... Its not like itll kill your shrooms or anything. Any experiment is worth doing as long as you dont fear the possibility of contams and losing your shit. Some do, some dont...I dont like to lose casings so I often recommend not trying out things like this. Not that it can't work..I just think no layer is better.

i dont like losing casings either or losing anything for that matter so im gonna jus play it safe and not do a DEC

It has been tried and it works but perlite simply doesnt absorb, and contains, water that well as verm does.
Ofcourse pools of water should be avoided, as always! :thumbup:
