After making a casing is it better to store it in a terrarium that has perlite in the bottom or in one that does not have perlite in the bottom and mist it once daily instead?

After making a casing its better to put it in the inbubator til the mycellium starts to break through the casing layer. Then put it in the fruiting chamber without perilite.....mist once or twice a day depending on what the casing layer looks like...keep it moist...not wet. Mist the inside of the fruiting chamber til you get 98 % humidity. Keep the humidity up til you get pinning. Then drop the humidity to 85 %. Good luck !

Ok, now I'm really confused. Road, you say put it in the fruiting chamber without Perilite. Thought you put an inch of water and 10% H2O2 (3% solution) and two inches of Perilite in the fruiting chamber for humidity????? Bob

Use perlite in your fruiting chamber with cakes. Casings don't need as much humidity. If you have a large fruiting chamber with small casings, you might need to use perlite to supplement the humidity they create on their own. Larger casings don't seem to need any help.

Some peolple use perlite for casing humidification, and some don't. It works both ways. For cakes, it seems all use it. For large casings made with bulk substr.(straw, manure, compost) it is never used, as it would be overkill.

Thanks for the advice. Going by the responses I'm getting, I'm going to put a couple of my casings in a terrarium with perlite and a couple in a terrarium without and just see which one does better.

bob, I don't use perilite with my casings. I do use perilite with my cakes....with 2" of perilite and a mix of peroxide to water. Reason being.....perilite is great for keeping the humidity high for the cakes. But perilite is too hard to get the humidity down from 98% after you have pinning in your casings....so dropping the humidity down to 85% was too hard to do with perilite. Hope that cleared that up....lolz

What does it mean if you have thick white fuzzy mycilium growing about half way up the stems of your shrooms? Also on another casing the shrooms are getting kinda fuzzy on the caps. Is that caused by a different reason then what is causing the mycillium to grow up the stems on my other casing. One casing is in a terrerium with perlite and the other is in one without.

Your humidity is a little too high. But, as long as your shrooms are growing, don't worry.

Is it bad to eat that white fuzzy stuff and do you have rubb it of, or can you just eat it and dry it? Thanks in advance, Pado
