Rycke, When you say "crumble" the cakes, do you mean to a fine granular,or to little pea size chunks, or something in between? Also should i do this by hand, rubber gloves?

Sorry i keep repeating, i dont know why its doing that.

This message relates to the method discussed by Ryche Hawk.
Is there a need for drainage holes in the container?
Why is the Peat Moss being used with the Vermiculite? I have read post that claim that using only Vermiculite is the way to go.
As far as a container goes, are those plastic shoebox containers sold in Dollar Stores good to use? The condensation formingon the walls might tend to make the substrate saturated (?????) - a shallow container might not?
Thank you. This is a great "post" for information.

Well, I think I need to actually make a sterile room like Stammets suggests. I just finished harvesting my third crop of cased Dactylum. Argh.

Thanks for the reply Ryche Hawk.
In regard to the bottom vermiculite layer - together with the casing layer.... is the steam distilled water considered sterile or should it be autoclaved? Also, would steam distilled water for spraying the casing layer be alright or should it be autoclaved also?
Thanks a lot!

I read the section of TMC about the acidic state of peat moss precluding the need for sterilization. However, I took my trusty pH meter and checked some sphagnum peat moss straight out of the bag, and it was no more acidic than pH 6. TMC refered to pH 3-4. Perhaps mine was already neutralized at the factory or something like that. Anyway, I'm guessing pH 6 isn't nearly acidic enough to be beneficial. Take from this what you will, but I'm going to be sterilizing my peat moss, at least until I come across some that's actually fairly acidic.

Ryche Hawk:
The pH scale is from 0 to 14. 7 is neutral. 0-7 = acidic 7-14 = basic. A "1" is a strong acid. A "14" is a strong base.
Well, anyway, could you answer this question:
As long as the bottom vermiculite layer is being sterilized together with the water, could someone mix the 2 together, sterilize in pressure cooker, etc. The sterilized material could be spread on the bottom of the container. I suppose this could be done with the peat moss/vermiculite casing mix also.
I thought this might help in preventing any contamination.
Thanks for a reply!

In my friend's experience rye is very easily contaminated. He has a sterile room and everything so...I bet it would pay off to be extra careful

Thanks for your sterilization doc, Ryche. Perhaps you should post the text here for everybody. Although be careful if you ever have a blood drug test done, cuz I'm sure they'll think you're huffing Lysol or something with all of it that must be in your system by now
