Does anyone think that if you used a tall airproof container the shrooms could grow directly from the container without any external humification (except the occaisional misting)?Pnyx

Ryche Hawk, I cased 4 colonized rice cakes in a 8" by 12" rubermaid container. I decided not to cover them over with vermiculite and peatmoss to observe the mycelium growth. When i woke up about 8 hours later I checked on it. It was already covered in mycelium! It seems the strain of cubensis I have is very agressive. CASING IS THE WAY TO GO;

Ryche Hawk, I noticed that you didn't recommend sterilizing the casing material. I've been doing it because I though it was nessasary. Is it?If so have you tried using a microwave to do the job.The instuctions to sterilizing in a microwave just say "sterilize in microwave". Not how long, If you should wet it first, ect. I would like to try this so I don't have to clean out my pressure cooker. Thanks.

OK,I'm currently using the PF cake style settup in a MMGG style styrofoam cooler that's getting humidity from an ultrasonic humidifier attatched to a timer. I am planning on trying casing, and have found that I can fit three 4" X 8" containers in the terrarium. My questions are: 1. Should I still use the humidifier or should I switch to hand spraying? Everything I've read suggests that the humidifier would be too powerful for this settup. Is this true? 2. Should I poke holes in the bottom of the trays to let excess water drain out or does this defeat the entire purpose?

Re: To Sterilize Peat or NoSterilizing your peat moss actually increases chances of contamination! The Bible (King Stamets Version) says so: 1. Peat based casings rarely require sterilization because its "acidic condition precludes many contaminants from colonizing it as a substrate." This is the primary reason we add buffering agents like lime, chalk or oyster shell to the casing layer; the effect of these agents is to basify the acidic peat to mushroom-friendly levels. 2. There are high levels of beneficial bacteria which inhabit the casing layer, resulting in "increased primordia formation, earlier cropping and higher yields." He concludes by saying that "these same bacteria give the casing a natural resistance to competitors. IN THIS RESPECT, A STERILIZED CASING LACKS BENEFICIAL MICROORGANISMS AND HAS LITTLE RESISTANCE TO CONTAMINANTS." (My emphasis.)

The problem is covered on pp. 129-30 in (you guessed it) TMC. So, I think it's a pretty good idea to sterilize vermiculite, but leave the peat moss well alone!

Thanks to all who added information to this thread. I just cased last night, and am eager to see the results. The only additions to Ryche Hawks recipe was that I added an 1/8 of a cup of calcium carbonate to my casing mix. I lightly covered with the 50/50 peat and verm (and touch of Calcium Carboante), and put back into a perlite terrarium. The only question I have is about the humidity. Ryche seems to endorse high humidity for the casing, and some others seem to prefer less than normal humidity. Which is right? Also, I would like to know if anyone has cold shocked their casing and gotten better or quicker results. I'm using the PF strain of cubensis. Thanks agian all, and I'll let everyone know of the results. Peace Out.

i know this thread can't get much longer, but i'd like to suggest this: a combination of the "nemiad" method (innoculating water and then mixing with substrate so the spores are spread evenly throughout the substrate) and casing. basically, sterilize the substrate materials (along with verm for casing and perlite for humitity) as the method instructs and then mix the innoculated water with the substrate material. but instead of putting it into jars for colonization, put the substrate on top of vermiculite on top of perlite, cover with a healthy amount of vermiculite and voila!if I find out more about the success of this i'll keep you informed

I will definitely let you guys know. It is logistically difficult, and should be done in a very sterile environment. you learn a lot when you try it, so it might take a few times for someone to get it right. i'm fairly certain a sterile environment is key.
