Everything is a Wager
    #3447482 - 12/04/04 08:25 PM (19 years, 3 months ago)

"Ooh Swami, wagering is so non-spiritual. It is heretical to even talk of such things."

The lion wagers his cunning, speed and limited energy to track down an antelope.

Approaching a woman with the intent to get closer is a gamble at being rejected.

Getting a job is a wager of your time that you can out-compete the other applicants.

Driving to work is a wager that you will utilize your driving skills to get there safely.

Having children is an enormous gamble. Your wife (or you, if female) could die in child-birth, or the children could be deformed or die before youdo in some tragedy.

Taking mushrooms is a gamble that you will not have a bad trip or do something stupid or experience other unwanted side-effects.

Meditating/searching for many years is a wager that there is some payback after all the effort.

I think you need to stop bringing your personal issues into other threads like this. Swami made a post with a real topic to be discussed and you have derailed this topic by bringing up personal shit with Swami. We actually have rules agansit this, he made no mention of you or anything concerning you in this thread. Settle your issues and play your squabbles out through PM's or some other medium, as this is a forum for discussion of spiritual and philosophical ideas in the main theme outlined in the initial post.

You've effectively derailed Swami's thread. I urge a moderator to move all off-topic posts in this thread, including this one as well, to some other location... perhaps The Dump.

Swami, you had a great point, I'm sorry it was so rudely interupted.  :smirk:

The thought or action itself is all I ask for....the result is immediate, simultaneous, and precisely what I expect. How could it be different? It obviously is what it is, and is not what it is not. There is never a wager.

It is a wager if it is perceived to be one.

Everything is also a metaphor for sweet potatoes.

Are you sure you don't mean "risk", or is a risk the same thing as a wager?

Looking at just one of your examples, I risk my life when I get into the car to drive to work, as we all do, but we take those risks as a part of life. Otherwise, we would be Howard Hughs, living in fear of even being around germs. But I don't think it would be a "wager".

Now, the lion, that I could see as a gamble. He is gambling that if he invests all his speed and cunning into running after his dinner, that he will catch it, otherwise he will just sit there and starve to death.

I think some things are risks, others are gambles.

Attempting to pick up on someone of the opposite sex: Both a risk and a gamble, perhaps? A gamble that if you make the effort to make contact, he/she will respond positively, but a risk that your ego will have to be scooped up off of the floor afterwards if the response was negative.

-The words are very similar, a risk just means you can loose something... but a wager puts emphasis on the gain made by taking a risk.

"Now the lion, that I could see as a gamble. He is gambling that if he invests all his speed and cunning after his dinner, that he will catch it, otherwise he will just sit there and starve to death."

Every action including non-action involves risk. What changes is the risk-reward ratio. That can change by the minute for a wild animal.

Take the lion, for example. If the lion has just feasted heavily on a fresh zebra carcass, protecting the meat has risk in that other lions or scavengers will fight for the carcass. But, the risk reward of protecting the carcass is better for the lion than dropping the carcass and chasing after even a slow and nearby zebra. If the male lion is hungry, stealing a smaller male or female lion's kill could still have better risk reward than chasing after some fast zebra. The big male lions really do lie around a lot until it is time to steal some meat from the real hunter.

Zebras will stay just out of a lion's sprint distance. The extra energy required to get further away (reducing risk) is greater than the increased risk of being eaten the closer proximity brings. After the lion has fed, or in times of drought, the risk of getting very close to the lion at the watering hole will be far less than the reward of getting needed water.
