Re: some ideas for improvement of posts quality [Re: Suffer]

i agree with suffer

more mods for the forums.

If you close OTD and the pub, then are you really going to be suprised when everything flows into the forums that keep this community what it is supposed to be?

There are tons of members, many would probably be very willing to help moderate.

Use the resources that are available

This might actually be a good idea. Other message boards have "Introduction" forums where newbies can introduce themselves and interact with other members. This would solve the problem of the Pub, and also allow us to keep up with the influx of new members.

BTW, if you need more mods, I'd be more than happy to volunteer. Especially if you go with the Introduction forum idea and need mods for that.

The diminishing quality of posts due to a flood of newbies. Haven't you read this thread?

I am a regular on 2 other forums both of which I am a mod.

We had the same problem with newbies flooding our versions of OTD and The Pub.

We created an Intro forum where newbs are to post to introduce themselves. Access to 'our OTD and Pub' is restricted until the people have been there for 31 days and have over 100 posts.

By doing this we found that we could weed out the morons more quickly as moderation on 'our OTD and Pub' was laxer due to the type of forums they are - people are allowed to get away with ALOT more on these forums.

Morons who just want to be stupid are usually picked up in the first 30 posts or so quite easily.

They were still able to contribute to the society but not allowed in the other areas until they had basically proved themselves worthy.

Anyways - just letting you all know what has worked on other boards.

Forgive me if I'm wrong, but isn't the Pub the introduction forum? I see several new introduction threads in the Pub every week. I don't see how this causes a problem. In fact, I've been reading the Pub a lot MORE than usual lately due to an influx of halfway intelligent noobs. So I don't know where you guys are getting this "problem" crap from.

This is a repost but from the Pub and not this forum .....

There was a suggestion in WAF to have an "Introduction" forum for newbies to introduce themselves. I've seen this on other message boards, and it sounds like a great idea. It will allow us to weed out the trolls and puppets, so that way both the Pub and OTD get higher-quality posts. If this idea goes through, I'd like to be the first to volunteer to mod such a forum. I think I could deal with n00bs pretty fairly.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I agree. Although I am a n00b I agree this should be a forum and that n00bs must introduce themselves and post in this forum for no less than 20 days. Then after the trial period have access to everything but market place and ODD. Then have access when they have no less than 50 posts and no less than 35 days on the boards. I Personally would have still stayed and stuck it out in the introduction forum because I love it here. I spend a good amount of my day here i.e. work, home, school (no not high school) etc. etc. I actually have missed 1 or 2 classes because I lost track of time on this forum

Anyway I am just a n00b and my opinion doesn't count for much around here. So take it as you wish.

hey lady, it's not only about the pub we're talking about

The pub isn't so bad and I see a lot of cool smart newbies there too! But GQ and ODD are also forums we're talking about.

I also think that the idea of the 'interoduction forum' or a certain amount of days before noobs can see the pub and OTD (maybe a few other forums too) would help getting rid of puppets, people who just come here to post crap etc.

you don't think it's a good idea, I know, but this isn't gonna happen anyway probably so don't worry

I definitely agree with the idea of an "introductions" forum - another idea that i have might require too much work from the mods, but i'll share it anyway - OK for the first, say, 30 days as a member, you are on a "trial" basis. All posts by users during this trial period would be "flagged" (i'm not sure how open-source UBB is, but I've implemented a similar system in a MySql/ModPerl forums-App that I created for my work, it should be easy enough to get the UBB people to do this). Mods could then pull up a list of "flagged" posts, and if they see a "BeerWeed" type of post, put a 'warning' on that user. Maybe some system like 2 warnings and you aren't allowed to post for 15 days, and a third warning and you are perma-banned. As well, all flagged posts could have an easy link "inform moderators of posting violations" - this would send a message to whatever mods so they could check out the situation themselves. I'm not sure - this idea seems like it could solve the problem we are facing - but to me, it does reek of policing. I think the only way we can truly avoid this problem is to make the extra effort to make posts with "good" content ourselves, and show people by our own example how much more fun it is to actually have intelligent discourse, instead of just being a jackass.

I'd like to add that and "Introduction" forum would probably be a more efficient way of weeding out the trolls and puppets who keep returning, such as BeerWeed and Doser.

Suffer I spend all my time on the boards deleting and moving crap posts from the pub and the rest of the mods also work real hard to keep up with the crap that gets posted. There was a time not long ago when I hardly ever had to use my mod abilities in the pub, not it's all i do and I would like to enjoy the forums rather than be a constant cop.

It really sucks.

yes it does suck. I just introduced a girl i met to the shroomery... after 5 minutes of browsing around she decided to register and made her introduction post in the pub... I would hate to cut off our nose to spite our face.

That's kind of what the pub is. When I registered and read the description to the pub I thought it might be a good place to go first.

Of course, I was also new to the world of message boards.

edit: after reading more of the replies in this thread, adding mods to the pub could help improve the "situation". I'm sure there are a good few pub regulars that would be willing to help. Hell, I'd do it if you couldn't find anyone, but I don't frequent the pub as much as OTD and other forums so I'm not a good choice.

newbies need to be able to introduce themselves to the community.
I don't think adding a kidergarden-like forum will do much to change the post quality in the Pub. If Ripple's having problems dealing with the amount of 'crap,' knock a few Pubbers up to mod. There are a large number that would be eager and very willing to help keep the their section of the site nice and clean (yet they still refuse to shower ).

how about noobies can see the pub (not OTD yet) but cant post in it at first... that way they can get the "feel" of the community forums before they jump in there.

just an idea.

and i think that overall the majority of people are just dumb, and there are always going to be dumb annoying noobie posts in the cult forums ("what shroomz grow in my area, man?") no matter what sort of erowid bookmarking, FAQ enforcing things you stress. the only way to deal with these posts are mods. which at least in hunting they do a good job of.

just my .02
