yet another idea for reducing sock count

So like, whenever someone opens up a new account, they should have to pay a $5 registration fee. This would be a one time only charge for new accounts only. There would not be continuous membership fees, and I think the $5 pays for itself for the knowledge that can be gained (if someone is paying >$10 for a syringe, they can afford $5 once too). It could be paid via paypal, or an anonymous $5 could be sent in the mail.
The effect of this is, someone who wants to have a bunch of sock puppets is going to think twice before doing it. People will only bother creating high-quality, quality sock puppets (tongue in cheek) rather than the numerous dumb ones.
The downside is, there might be people out there who don't have $5. Umm, but what they can do is write a letter (anonymous perhaps) by hand at least 500 words of something saying anything pleading for a free membership. That way the $5 is really optional, a donation really.
Thoughts?

I think it's a great idea. Or maybe instead of $5, just the essay idea, and it can be sent by email. They used to have that on the lycaeum.org boards, you'd have to write a short essay explaining why you're interested, and the mods would screen them.

It would be fine to say you either write an essay or send the $5. The contents of the essay shouldn't be too strictly checked, just make sure it took awhile to write so that there is a 'cost' of entry.

i like the idea too, heck i think you could prolly cut it down from 5$ down to $1.... if some moron wants to keep paying a dollar to make stupid puppets that will be banned let them pay for thor and 3d's lunch
On the other hand, i think you could get away with only making it cost 25c... whos gonna go through all that hassel to keep making accounts that keep getting banned. also with that note, simply making the registration procedure more complicated could help out drasticly as well.

yeah, the legal issue/making a profit was something I was concerned about to. Thats the benefit of keeping it optional with the essay alternative. Also, records could be kept proving that all the money went to pay for the boards regular bills and no net profit was made.
The $ amount could be reduced, but $5 is pretty minimal and would compensate the mod's time of actually handling registrations.

This sounds like it could be pretty effective. I like the idea of the option $5 or 500 word essay.
That should cut the sock use down to include only the truly depraved.

No thanks. I know that not everybody would pay that $5 and I wouldn't want to feel that anybody is better around here than other people because the people running the place say they are. The essay is a good idea....I guess!

No.
Just think of the broke teenagers and otheragers, the other people who have no credit cards etc.
And essays? Think of the people who don't speak English as a first language. All that stuff.
That would just be oppression.

That sounds like a good idea. Maybe a user should be allowed to make up to 5 posts before having to pay the fee.
Or members should be allowed to post 30 times per month, And would have to pay a one time fee of $5 for unlimited posting.
