I don't think allowing a low number of posts before charging the fee is not very good, because malicious folks can still create lots of socks and only use them each 30 times or whatever, and it doesn't take many posts to create antagonism. I do not think such a compromise is necessary, as anyone who has the resources to visit this site would have the resources to pay the fee or write an essay.

This is not a high fee, its not actually a fee since they can write the essay, and the everyone will still have access to all information gathered, they just won't be able to ask questions or add info until they pony up. So it will not prevent the knowledge here from being spread. I am not advocating making the forums so that non-users cannot read them.

Thanks for the input people, I'm still convinced this is a good idea though. Keep the discussion rolling, I really wonder why the admin's haven't spoken on this officially.

No need to tax gas, just strip the subsidies and show the people the real cost without the gas companies benefiting.

I think that the shroomery is based on the idea of freedom of speech and freedom of information. While it may seem like a good idea to keep the underage posters/trolls away, this is why there is a rating system, so people can immediatly (ususally) weed out good/bad advice given to them.

Also, is an admin or a mod really going to want to read hundreds of essays? People on this site will be viewed for the information that they present/discuss, and charging or demanding a written essay to join a "club" is pretty beat.

The system that they use now to expose and eliminate puppets seems to be working fine. Puppets usually last about 5 minutes in OTD. I wouldn't add anything to the registration page.
