some ideas for improvement of posts quality

some ideas for improvement:
- ask people to bookmark www.erowid.org when they sign up
(I notice most noobs don't even know this site and therefor ask things they shouldn't ask)

not my idea but a good one
-Open OTD and close the Pub for new members
(the other way around than it is now. too many crap gets posted in the Pub)

Agreed, erowid should be known by all new members, and access probably should be switched for n00bs from the pub too otd. As far as essays, which I mentioned in my post, they don't have to be huge, just maybe a paragraph or so. This would filter out people who don't give a fuck (probably do a good job of curtailing puppets too).

Too funny. First they close down OTD to new members because we don't want other people looking at our dirty laundry/don't want to scare noobs away. Then its suggested that they RE-OPEN OTD now that the influx of dirty laundry into the pub has increased dramatically. Can you people make up your minds? Seems like the original security issue has gone out the window and now its all about where the 'crap' threads should go, OTD or the Pub.

maybe there should be another forum for newbies to interact with members, while keeping the "crap" out of both forms. If there is a way to work that out.

or if you don't want to make a newbie forum, both off topic forums can still be closed to newbies, after all, this is a web site for the discusion of mushrooms, so the logical evolution of a member would be mushroom cult/hunting, all th edrug forums---> off topic forums once you got to know the community.

yea  I was about to suggest that as well(edit : i actually read what you said as "Restrict otd and pub only for older members"), and make a new general discussion forum for new and old members maybe

but like adrug said, that would only move the crap from one forum to another, and neither of the regulars want it in their forum, so either make a new forum for for newbies and old members and block out access for newbies to both forums, or just block access to otd and the pub and only have the drug-related on topic forums open to newbies.

I think that last idea could work out well. Its a little extreme though, so maybe making a new "pub" forum for new members is the alternative.

Either way, blocking new members from otd and the pub would be a good idea. Remember that I havnt been here long though, I'm just giving my opinion on what would be best from what ive seen so far.

Lol.. not a bad idea Anno. However, I think it might save a lot of this garbage from spilling into the important forums. A flood zone if you will. Unfortunately, many of the childish members seem to dwell there. If that were to be done, it'd have to come with some heavy moderation in all the other forums... just for all the puppets and idiots. Eventually when theres no place for em, they'll leave (most of the non beerweed ones)

I've got no problem with the Pub, but screw OTD.

OTD is fine the way it is, you need a forum like that... my concern is that the pub bears the full brun tof all the newbies and puppets and such, if only on topic forums where available to newbies, it could help out a lot. If puppets (beerweed, doser come to mind) they would be banned a whole lot faster.

closing the pub to new members is just ignoring the real problem. If moderators are not willing to deal with this kinda shit, then maybe we need new moderators.

Sorry to sound so harsh... but seriously, whats next? "We have too many puppets! Close the whole site!"

Forums like the pub also keep some of that shit out of more serious and indeed ontopic forums like cult. And i dunno about you all, but when i tell someone to sign up on the boards, the Pub is where i tell them to introduce themselves and get a sense of the community.

Delete bullshit posts and ban members who deserve it... and maybe more liberal IP bans from the administration...

i dunno... i havet gotten high in 2 days so MEH! ban everyone
