I grew up in a religious environment
    #3065718 - 08/29/04 03:47 PM (19 years, 6 months ago)

I can probably tell a bunch of stories from the bible. There was alot of dogma which seemed to surround my religion, which concerned me even from a young age. It didn't take long for me to discover what I guess I now believe:

The only 2 important things taught by Jesus were ORGANIZED RELIGION IS BAD, and THE ONLY THING THAT WILL SAVE US IS LOVE.

Anyone care to comment?

"ORGANIZED RELIGION IS BAD"

It depends on the individual. Downing other people's beliefs as inferior is self important behavior.

I am not "downing" anyone's beliefs, I am merely stating mine.

And that wine is important during a social celebration.

I wonder if Jesus approves of beer? How about a good dark beer like Becks.

My new fave - try Fat Tire Ale. It is an Amercian "boutique" ale that puts the German beers to shame (in the same way that German beers put "mainstream" American beers to shame).

I don't drink as much as I used too, but I will drink a brew now and again...I'll keep my eye out for it.

"Sometimes when I reflect back on all the beer I drink I feel ashamed. Then I look into the glass and think about the workers in the brewery and all of their hopes and dreams. If I didn't drink this beer, they might be out of work and their dreams would be shattered. Then I say to myself, 'It is better that I drink this beer and let their dreams come true than to be selfish and worry about my liver.'"

my sentiment exactly. Free love, music, and drugs. Jesus was just a hippy and a brother.

The church ... I'm not nearly as fond of them. The idea of dogmatizing and organizing religion to conform to the whims of a few is just wrong.
If there is a god, I doubt it would care if I worshipped him weekly.

1. What I like about organized religion is that I can go to their churches when I need a break.

2. I believe in love. (Wasn't that a line in "A Beautiful Mind"???)

As for #1, I don't believe I need to belong to a church. But I like a church I can go to where others have similar beliefs to mine where I can sort of get my head back into the simplicity of life again, after months of getting pounded. Well, seems like getting pounded sometimes.

This church I go to is residence to a preacher from some southern state, so his drawl is relaxing. Plus, he teaches the bible from a simplisitic perspective. Simply, "love one another".

What do you mean by organized religion?

Has anyone seen Stigmata?

Organised religion = pick-up joint

You can not underestimate the social aspect of organised religion

Yes, the organisation of religion holds the danger, that the worldly 'organisation' is overemphasized and as result religion gets second place and tainted. (A human, worldly problem, with any organisations)
Emphasize 'good' believes (= religion) and celebrate it with others !
Believes will organise themselves, if you don't mind telling them to the interested.
Organisations of 'believes' often forgot for what they stand for.
The followers of Petrus definitely got something wrong.

Jesus taught a lot more than that, but yes, his main message was Love. There is no doubt about that.

Beyond love, he taught MANy, MANY important things, which I dont care to elaborate on...

but I agree. Finding Jesus's message, or Krishna's message, or Buddha's mesage....this things need to found in our OWN hearts. Religions can help, but signing up for christianity isnt a guaranteed way to be dis-ease free (like jesus taught), god-realized (like jesus taught), and all of the other qualities he showed man how to achieve.
