I feel like I’ve already expressed my views many times. As I’ve stated before, I still support a two state solution even after Oct7 because there simply is no other option.

While I acknowledge the Jewish people as being the indigenous inhabitants of Judea and modern day Israel, Palestinians have their own history and connection to the land too. Zionism is an indigenous people’s movement that believes Jews have a right to self-determination upon their ancestral homeland, so to deny that to Palestinians goes directly against the very principles at the core of Zionism even if their history is a more recent one the connection is still there.

All life is beautiful, sacred, and deserving of dignity, respect, and protection. Palestinian life is no exception.

That all said, I would be an idiot if I tried to say we were anywhere close to where we need to be for a two state solution to actually work. Hamas still retains substantial armed and coercive power in Gaza, and its 1988 charter explicitly called for violence against Jews, that goal still remains the same today. Meanwhile, Israel’s governing coalition has empowered far right figures such as Ben-Gvir, while settler leaders such as Daniella Weiss continue pushing their own extremist vision.

As generations of conflict, trauma, and hostility compound, tensions rise, anger deepens, and hatred grows fat in even the most peaceful hearts. The enormous work required on both sides to undo dehumanization, rebuild trust, and create political cultures capable of coexistence is daunting to think about and seems impossible at times.

But I know eventually we will get there. I might not see it in my lifetime, but we will get there, because, as I mentioned before, a two state solution is the only realistic path I see to both peoples having self-determination, security, and a future.

How do you get your two state solution is one of those states have no people left in it. Self determination in the middle east has never been possible to anyone involved.

No, where are you getting any of this?

Nova was a psytrance music festival held over the conclusion of Sukkot and Simchat Torah, part of the Jewish holiday season we are literally in right now. It was not a political rally celebrating the ā€œtheft of Palestinian land,ā€ and there is absolutely no evidence to support that the festivalgoers were trying to ā€œtauntā€ Hamas or Palestinians.

I think there is a huge cultural disconnect here. Psytrance is not some random niche thing Israelis suddenly decided to start doing in Southern Israel. Israel is one of the largest major centers of global psytrance culture. Academic research literally describes Israel as a transnational epicenter of psychedelic trance and the Israeli scene itself grew heavily out of Goa trance culture that young Israelis brought back with them in the late 80s and early 90s while traveling and backpacking across India.

These are commonly called nature parties or mesibot teva in Israel for a reason. They are outdoor gatherings built around music, dancing, huge sound systems, open space, and camping. This is a longstanding, widespread, and recognizable part of Israeli culture, not some weird political ritual directed at Gaza.

The scene is deeply international, as well. Nova itself was connected to the global psytrance circuit, acting as the Israeli counterpart to Universo Paralello, a massive Brazilian psytrance party. Tribe of Nova, the promoters and facilitators behind the Nova festival put on events as far away as Hilltop in Goa, India. Their own website describes Goa as a central part of their culture and Hilltop Goa as a ā€œsecond home.ā€ I have personally been to one of these parties in Goa, India. These organizers and this community put on psytrance parties because they love psytrance and they put them on all over the world, not just in Southern Israel, so trying to interpret it as some weird geopolitical statement makes very little sense to me.

There is also a basic geographic reality being ignored. Israel is tiny, and much of its population is concentrated in the heavily developed center of the country, while the south contains vastly more open land. If you want to put thousands of people, enormous speakers, camping areas, parking, and several stages somewhere outdoors without planting it in the middle of a dense metropolitan area, of course you are going to be looking toward the more open north or south.

If people genuinely do not know what an Israeli psytrance party looks like, I think they should actually watch one.

Here is DEKEL playing Moksha Purim in Southern Israel in 2020, three and a half years before Oct7. Notice, this party also takes place in Southern Israel and is coinciding with a Jewish holiday, just like Nova. In this case, it’s for Purim, which is why everyone is in costumes.

I challenge any of you to watch it, even if just for 3 or 4 minutes. Look at it: thousands of Israelis in costumes, psychedelic decorations, people dancing outside in the sun, huge sound systems. That is the cultural context many are missing.

There is another fact that makes the ā€œthey deliberately went there to taunt Gazaā€ narrative even harder to take seriously. Re’im was not some symbolic location that had been selected months in advance as a statement. Reporting shows the organizers moved the event to the Re’im site only two days before it began after another intended site in Southern Israel fell through. And on top of that, the festival goers did not even know the exact location of the party until shortly before the party. The tradition of not broadly advertising exact nature party locations until close to an event also comes out of the history of Israeli rave culture. Historically, many of these parties were underground, and keeping locations quiet until shortly beforehand became part of that culture even for permitted events like Nova years later. Most importantly, according to the Israeli security assessment cited by the UN Commission of Inquiry, the terrorists who attacked Nova did not know in advance that the festival was even there and they discovered the gathering during the attack while flying over the area.

So think through what the claim actually requires us to believe.

Thousands of Israeli ravers who didn’t know where the location was until shortly before supposedly gathered there specifically to ā€œtaunt Hamas,ā€ at a festival whose Re’im location had been substituted only days beforehand, in a rave culture where outdoor parties in Southern Israel are completely normal, while the terrorists themselves apparently did not even know the festival was there when the attack began?

That is not evidence. It is a political story being projected backward onto murdered civilians in order to make their murder feel more explicable, more deserved, or somehow less innocent.

And that is where this stops being historical analysis and becomes victim blaming.

There is no evidence that the thousands of people dancing at Nova gathered there to celebrate Palestinian dispossession. There is no evidence that they went there to taunt Palestinians or provoke Hamas. Those motives are being invented after the fact and assigned collectively to people who were murdered, kidnapped, raped, wounded, or forced to run for their lives.

Their presence at a music festival did not make them responsible for what Hamas chose to do to them.

You do not get to manufacture a political motive for civilians after they have been slaughtered and then use that invented motive to diminish their victimhood. If you are going to claim that thousands of individual human beings were deliberately participating in some act of political provocation, the burden is on you to provide evidence for that claim.

Otherwise, what you are doing is taking ordinary people at a rave and retroactively constructing a reason why what happened to them was somehow connected to their own behavior.

That is victim blaming. Full stop.

It was a rave. It was not a rally at the Gaza fence.

"The Palestinians and surrounding Arab nations waged war upon them from day 1 of their establishment as a state"

Israel wasn't established on empty land -- it's very foundation was built on the violent ethnic cleansing known as the Nakba (the catastrophe) -- would you accept a UN decision that gives away 56% of the USA to establish a new country? -- would you accept the attempts to ethnically cleanse this land grant, or would you act on the right to defend yourself?

The central facts of what happened in the Nakba during the 1948 Palestine war are well established, documented, and widely agreed upon by most Israeli, Palestinian, and other historians

"Never again" was supposed to be a universalist injunction to prevent all forms of genocide -- but it's been perverted by zionazis as justification for oppression, apartheid, and genocide of Palestinians for generations

Of course it wasn't established on empty land.  The land was occupied by 'Palestinians', who had essentially been waging war on Jews going back to the Balfour Declaration.  There was never an actual state or country of 'Palestine'.  It was a territory formerly known as Judaea, with a name given to it by Romans after they had done a true ethnic cleansing of the Jews who lived there.  The name 'Palestine' was meant to add insult to injury, and to erase any connection to their land by naming it after the Phillistines, their ancient enemy.

Once Israel was officially granted its statehood, and all the absentee Arab land owners sold much of the land to Jewish settlers fair and square, the embittered Palestinians continued to revolt and attack the Jews, rather than accept it and attempt to live side by side in peace.  Some of them did, and their descendants remain in Israel as part of the 2 million Arab population currently residing in Israel.  How would this be possible if they were 'ethnically cleansed'? :confused2:

It should be kept in mind, that if the Germans or Russians had control over what happened in the Middle East after World War II rather than Britain, things would likely have been far worse for Palestinians.

The more I learn about the history of the Israel/Palestine conflict, the more I learn that there's usually two versions at play - the Palestinian victim narrative, and the reality of what happened which involved atrocities on both sides.  As far as the Nakba, to call it an 'ethnic cleansing' is ridiculous.  There was a full scale war launched upon the Jews by the Palestinians and the surrounding Arab nations after the inception of Israel.  I'll dumb it down for you...during war, many folks tend to get displaced (I believe around 12 million Germans were displaced at the end of WWII).  Also, many of the Palestinians were evacuated from their homes by the the invading Arabs, who told them they would be able to return after the Jews were wiped out.  Unfortunately for them, they lost the war.

I'm a proponent of the no-state solution -- the two-state solution is support for ethnonationalism, which can only preserve the status quo of Jewish majority through apartheid or population control measures, which is no solution at all

No... if not 'no-state' then it will need to be one-state not built around support for a single ethnicity -- Israel does not have the right to exist as an ethnostate -- even if we concede the right to return, the idea that a Jewish state is the only way to protect Jewish people doesn't hold up -- antisemitism is real, but it's not the only form of bigotry or hatred in the world, and the solution to hatred and bigotry isn't to divide society into ethnofascist enclaves

If you ask me, the idea that Jews will inevitably be persecuted anywhere they go,  except Israel, is itself rooted in antisemitic tropes -- is there a heavy weight of historical oppression of Jews? Yes! -- are Jews inevitably persecuted wherever they live? No! -- the idea of Jews as a uniquely alien group that exists everywhere but belongs nowhere is a genuine antisemitic trope and it is this very lie which is used to defend the necessary existence of a Jewish state

But beyond that, I read all of what you write about dignity, respect, and protection -- and I also want to acknowledge you recognizing wider problems with Israeli political leaders beyond Netanyahu -- but I still have difficulty squaring this off with your refusal to acknowledge the general consensus among expert organizations (both international and Israeli) in recognizing that the Israeli state is committing genocide against the Palestinian people -- how can we even begin that "enormous work" you mention, if we can't start by acknowledge the reality of what is currently happening?

As you say, it wasn't the celebration of stolen land, it was a party/celebration/rave/festival on stolen land, within earshot of people living in abject poverty because of an occupation by those who took their land. To a destitute people, the reason for the celebration is a moot point.
For decades, long before the more recent attempt at genocide, Ive watched the Israelis bulldoze homes, destroy schools and neighborhoods and olive orchards, indiscriminately killing women and children, and basically strip a people of their civilization and humanity.
To this day, 'Settlers' attack innocent folks because let's face it, Israelis have hate in their hearts for their neighbors. And of course the Pals hate right back. I can't see this ever changing, and Im ashamed the US has supplied the weapons and monies to help make the destruction possible.
Israel is a parasite that fuels the hate between the Middle East and the West. Ironically, we now have a parasite class running our own country, but one that's ignorant and greedy and easily manipulated by the likes of Netanyahu, who talked Trump into the present disaster with Iran. Billions of dollars wasted.
While billionaires wine & dine and live lives of luxury, Americans are struggling just to feed themselves or obtain medical treatment to heal their injuries and disease. We are becoming the Palestinians of the West.
