No, where are you getting any of this?
Nova was a psytrance music festival held over the conclusion of Sukkot and Simchat Torah, part of the Jewish holiday season we are literally in right now. It was not a political rally celebrating the ātheft of Palestinian land,ā and there is absolutely no evidence to support that the festivalgoers were trying to ātauntā Hamas or Palestinians.
I think there is a huge cultural disconnect here. Psytrance is not some random niche thing Israelis suddenly decided to start doing in Southern Israel. Israel is one of the largest major centers of global psytrance culture. Academic research literally describes Israel as a transnational epicenter of psychedelic trance and the Israeli scene itself grew heavily out of Goa trance culture that young Israelis brought back with them in the late 80s and early 90s while traveling and backpacking across India.
These are commonly called nature parties or mesibot teva in Israel for a reason. They are outdoor gatherings built around music, dancing, huge sound systems, open space, and camping. This is a longstanding, widespread, and recognizable part of Israeli culture, not some weird political ritual directed at Gaza.
The scene is deeply international, as well. Nova itself was connected to the global psytrance circuit, acting as the Israeli counterpart to Universo Paralello, a massive Brazilian psytrance party. Tribe of Nova, the promoters and facilitators behind the Nova festival put on events as far away as Hilltop in Goa, India. Their own website describes Goa as a central part of their culture and Hilltop Goa as a āsecond home.ā I have personally been to one of these parties in Goa, India. These organizers and this community put on psytrance parties because they love psytrance and they put them on all over the world, not just in Southern Israel, so trying to interpret it as some weird geopolitical statement makes very little sense to me.
There is also a basic geographic reality being ignored. Israel is tiny, and much of its population is concentrated in the heavily developed center of the country, while the south contains vastly more open land. If you want to put thousands of people, enormous speakers, camping areas, parking, and several stages somewhere outdoors without planting it in the middle of a dense metropolitan area, of course you are going to be looking toward the more open north or south.
If people genuinely do not know what an Israeli psytrance party looks like, I think they should actually watch one.
Here is DEKEL playing Moksha Purim in Southern Israel in 2020, three and a half years before Oct7. Notice, this party also takes place in Southern Israel and is coinciding with a Jewish holiday, just like Nova. In this case, itās for Purim, which is why everyone is in costumes.
I challenge any of you to watch it, even if just for 3 or 4 minutes. Look at it: thousands of Israelis in costumes, psychedelic decorations, people dancing outside in the sun, huge sound systems. That is the cultural context many are missing.
There is another fact that makes the āthey deliberately went there to taunt Gazaā narrative even harder to take seriously. Reāim was not some symbolic location that had been selected months in advance as a statement. Reporting shows the organizers moved the event to the Reāim site only two days before it began after another intended site in Southern Israel fell through. And on top of that, the festival goers did not even know the exact location of the party until shortly before the party. The tradition of not broadly advertising exact nature party locations until close to an event also comes out of the history of Israeli rave culture. Historically, many of these parties were underground, and keeping locations quiet until shortly beforehand became part of that culture even for permitted events like Nova years later. Most importantly, according to the Israeli security assessment cited by the UN Commission of Inquiry, the terrorists who attacked Nova did not know in advance that the festival was even there and they discovered the gathering during the attack while flying over the area.
So think through what the claim actually requires us to believe.
Thousands of Israeli ravers who didnāt know where the location was until shortly before supposedly gathered there specifically to ātaunt Hamas,ā at a festival whose Reāim location had been substituted only days beforehand, in a rave culture where outdoor parties in Southern Israel are completely normal, while the terrorists themselves apparently did not even know the festival was there when the attack began?
That is not evidence. It is a political story being projected backward onto murdered civilians in order to make their murder feel more explicable, more deserved, or somehow less innocent.
And that is where this stops being historical analysis and becomes victim blaming.
There is no evidence that the thousands of people dancing at Nova gathered there to celebrate Palestinian dispossession. There is no evidence that they went there to taunt Palestinians or provoke Hamas. Those motives are being invented after the fact and assigned collectively to people who were murdered, kidnapped, raped, wounded, or forced to run for their lives.
Their presence at a music festival did not make them responsible for what Hamas chose to do to them.
You do not get to manufacture a political motive for civilians after they have been slaughtered and then use that invented motive to diminish their victimhood. If you are going to claim that thousands of individual human beings were deliberately participating in some act of political provocation, the burden is on you to provide evidence for that claim.
Otherwise, what you are doing is taking ordinary people at a rave and retroactively constructing a reason why what happened to them was somehow connected to their own behavior.
That is victim blaming. Full stop.
It was a rave. It was not a rally at the Gaza fence.
