Yep.  Been thinkin about a rainless lid.  Been thinkin what if there was maybe just a layer of poly felt glued to the underside. Or something... i dont know.

Ye who developes the "rainless lid" shall change the entire convention of our community

When I was first getting into shroomery 19 ish years ago someone had a slanted firm plastic sheet under the lid so the droplets would slide down to the side of the tub. This was for PFTEK so it could just slide into the perlite no problem, but if you could create a reservoir catch on the side of the tub to collect and evap moisture that collects and slides down it might be possible??

I also learned the hard way not wiping your lid (or shaking it off) of excess moisture, it can drip in the same place over and over if not caught in time, turned into a going outside project (small trich spot)

Fuck! I think this has been an issue of mine for over a year! I been trying everything. I switched grain, tubs, coir, cultures, my entire process, and much more. I would always get a small trich spot somewhere that seemed like it had an excessive amount of moisture from rain off of the lid. It was only on the surface never in the sub at first then of course progress into the sub. Shit. I'm going to try a paper towel stretched across the entire top of the tub held in place by the lid. What drips on it, if any, should wick out to the sides and dry out while still allowing airflow. If this is it I'm going to be so happy but so fucking mad I didn't think of this before.

I also do not know about the mushiness of the grains, or the reservoir of a standard insta or multicooker, whether it is a small pot with handles, stainless steel, whatever.
However if you do the math in the last link I sent you I think you will find your answer. I have not dealt with them myself, I have a 23qt Presto and a 25qtAA I use standard most time. That is just lucky being blessed to have good equipment, though.

It's perfectly plausible you glossed over it, sometimes suprises me how many people don't take the time to read before they post. either way no worries and you're right.

I could if I did 1 or 2 tubs at a time but I stack multiple and really don't want to unstack, wipe, and restack every day when the idea of a monotub is to let it sit and wait for the flush to come in. I don't keep looking at them everyday. Do this long enough and you'll get it, you'll want to set and forget till it's harvest time.

Plus wiping it daily starts to fuck with the internal climate you are trying to stabilize and potentially lead to some annoying sporadic pinning things.

Anecdotal but in my not LITFA days when I constantly wiped the lid it would lead to shitty canopies.

Has anyone use black foil/cardstock for prints with success?

I haven't tried, but flagging just in case: foil is food contact rated and typically comes from the factory well sanitized, so freshly exposed parts of the roll can be considered low-contam out of the box. I don't think the same is true of cardstock (but maybe?!). Staying in the food world can save on some future cleanup.

1 quart spawn 3 quart sub , yes its micropore and it was done on 7-31-26..., it definitely is thin.

1:3 ratio is fine although I prefer 1:4. Doing 1 jar to 1 tub is the way to go(in my opinion) until your have more fruits then you'll ever need(which you will) because then it doesn't matter if it fails, well it matters but not soul crushing matters :muppet:

What size tub are you running? Using a smaller tub to get a deeper substrate might be an option.

1oz0fTheory said:

Just opened it and its super dry was going to drench it and re apply the wrap and open like 4-5 of those holes that are covered with micropore

Hmm, so the surface was dry even though you have mp tape on all holes and the lid closed, is that the case?

It seems you didn't use a top layer, like 2cm(compressed) of coir(with or without verm) on top after mixing the grain spawn with the substrate? I really like using a top layer for cubes, ochras and subtrops. The biggest benefit of a top layer in my opinion is that after you're done with spawning you can mist the top layer to be a little over field capacity while the grains still sit in the field capacity substrate.

That way things shouldn't dry out as fast. It also means that if the surface does dry out during colonization, you can keep misting it until you see mycelium poking through it :awesomenod:

Here you can see the top layer by just looking at the mycelium growth pattern.

I suck at quick answers

yes, I have spawn running now at least 3quarts and 4 brf cakes and other grows growing but anyways next time I will go thicker on the substrate and use a 1-4 ratio so wish me luck. Can't wait till I have that same problem of having too many fruits than I ever need , if my current appetite is any indicator I am going to need constant tubs going. 1 question I have do you add the substrate casing in the beginning or after the tub is colonized and you are introducing more fae?

You won't need luck, you got this man and I'm sure you'll have an abundance of fruits before 2027

Not sure if you are familiar with the ez dial hole placement, but it has 3 holes on long sides and 5 holes on the short sides like this:

When I start a tub I will tape up two of the holes on the long sides and the top row on the short sides like this:

I will keep those holes taped up until one of two things happens, 1: if the beads of water are becoming large enough to pool or 2: pinset has set. When my pinset is set I usually remove the tape from the long sides so all 3 hole are open. Most of the time that is the only adjustment I do.

I apply the top layer when I spawn, so at the beginning. Stipe has a video of how he does it with shoeboxes, I have done some small adjustments to get 2cm top layer because I'm using 15L tubs, but other then that the process is the same

I’m running a couple of Excalibur dehydrators. Most of them, jammed full, dry perfectly nice fruits at 135-145 for 18-20 hours.

I have 2 dehydrators that keep burning my fruits till black.

Is this just a temp issue? Should I drop it down to 120? 110?

Or is it an individual dehydrator issue?

I've run 48hrs+ at 160 and never had so much as a golden browning. If they're literally blackening, that sounds like a broken temp regulator or something. And a fire hazard. Metal trays? I imagine any plastic would also get messed up? If you have a thermometer or something, it's worth verifying that the temp they say is near the temp they're really putting out.

Regular plastic trays. To be fair , all of them defer in finishing color and texture to some degree. Some do burn them a tad bit. But this one just chars the fck out of them.

Guaranteed it was a drip, I did the same and looked at the sub (before putting it outside), just a small spot on the surface.

Popping the lid every morning to wipe or shake the lid will only disturb the microclimate for a short period of time, it's not a problem.

To fruit ATL7 I read somewhere in the masses of aging posts that fruiting them right after consolidation (1 week after full colonization of spawn) made them more apt to produce fruits rather than letting the stones fully form prior to fruiting.

It was a super old post, has anyone found this to be true?

A SFF shoe box would do the trick right? Just add a real casing?
