Is there any reason I couldn’t use a jar of colonized rye to g2g to jars of millet? I realize the reverse would be better but it’s just what I have ready right now.

There is no reason why you can't, I have gone from oats to WBS, or rye, it's no problem.

You need to mist (from high above and let it drift to the surface, no close blasts of water) that surface and catch it right away, you are still ok but get beads back on that surface and ease up on air for cubes for pinning, I couldn't tell you how many pictures I've seen over the years where the surface is a dessert (almost) too early in the cycle.  The problem is people here the term FAE and start it WAY too early, surface dries, no pins or sparse fruits, and it's all because of not leaving it alone (guilty too when I first started out) for pinning.  Cubes can handle 100% humidity or near for pins, check out these 2nd flush fruits (below), notice how dry the surface and sub is this late in the game, all good, fruits are well developed, rehydrate and pins in a day or two.  It's a timing thing, more humidity for pins setting, and then slowly adding air to the finish, it sounds complex, but once you get a few runs under your belt, it becomes second nature.

UPDATE: So I did have plenty of microdroplets on my pic, but to be sure, I attached a humidifier/mister and a hydrometer (my tub was at 60% humidity, popped it up to 95-96%) and they're pinning today.

I think what I described as "they looked like they were suffocating" was hyphae suffering from too little humidity. IDK, I'm new to this.

I'm pretty sure I spent a good amount of my Sunday just looking at them--these pins literally popped out of nowhere, I had photos of the tub when I woke up in the morning and passed by around noon and noticed there were suddenly pins everywhere!

I would take the tape off, looks like alot of condensation, but I am also a noob. Also uncover it and take a better picture.

Just opened it and its super dry was going to drench it and re apply the wrap and open like 4-5 of those holes that are covered with micropore

Looks good.  The intuitive process of monitoring surface conditions is REALLY hard to learn without doing it.  Its an organic learning process and once it settles in, youll do less and less to achieve the same result.  Myself, i havent misted, measured humidity or anything in years.  The one thing i do is occasionally carefully get the condensation off my lids so it doesnt rain on my surcaces. Ive tried developing a rain-less lid to no avail.  I have a new design in mind but i dont like showing my whole ass before concepts are proofed.  Ive embarassed myself more times than i care to admit around here.

Anyway seems like youre getting a grip on things and youre gonna have a good harvest.  See punisher tek after your first flush.  Make sure that fucker doesnt owe you anything before you dump it.

Thanks for bein here.

That tub looks like it's on track to do well (new pins and new knots, OH Yeah), keep doin' whatcha' doin' fungus friend!

How do you get away with not misting? Just making sure the sub is properly hydrated in the beginning?

Hrm... i think people wanna mist the moment the sub is colonized and dont give it time for the droplets to form on their own.  Either that, or they havent dialed their tubs fae settings in yet.

Sometimes you gotta tape holes, sometimes not! All depends on the climate. rh, temp, even air pressure/elevation can have an effect.

Hardest thing to dial in, is your intuition, but once youve got it, you can fruit a fuckin taco bell nachos container..

Depending on your ambient conditions, and leaving it alone in the beginning helps, most of the time I don't have to mist, or very light in the corners if needed. I also learned the hard way not wiping your lid (or shaking it off) of excess moisture, it can drip in the same place over and over if not caught in time, turned into a going outside project (small trich spot), and ended up doing really well.  I threw it under my ivy with a layer of homemade compost/garden soil, took care of that trick, real quick!

Yep.  Been thinkin about a rainless lid.  Been thinkin what if there was maybe just a layer of poly felt glued to the underside. Or something... i dont know.

I wonder if keeping the tub taped until I see it fully colonized with little droplets of its own making before I untape and from there maintain the droplets until it starts really pinning would be a good idea, I think I sprayed to early and made the mycelium get matted down because it wasn’t a proper mister. Do you all think a 18 qt tub pastey ez dial hole setup gives to much fresh air in the beginning?

You could glue a layer of those green rectangle Brillo pads to the bottom maybe.

I think thats your intuition starting to whisper to you. Id say, listen to it.

As for your question, it totally depends on you environment.  Sub depth can really play a role too.

You just gotta figure out what works for you.

Something like that, yeah.  I had a  series of lids with holes in the top in different configurations.  It helped a little and made for a more consistent surface conditions i felt like but they still rained.

Maybe just sponges honestly, could always take lid off squeeze em out a little and good to go.

Mite be cool.

Could soak
Up the condensation and then give it back when its fruit time.

1 quart spawn 3 quart sub , yes its micropore and it was done on 7-31-26..., it definitely is thin.

1:3 ratio is fine although I prefer 1:4. Doing 1 jar to 1 tub is the way to go(in my opinion) until your have more fruits then you'll ever need(which you will) because then it doesn't matter if it fails, well it matters but not soul crushing matters :muppet:

What size tub are you running? Using a smaller tub to get a deeper substrate might be an option.

Hmm, so the surface was dry even though you have mp tape on all holes and the lid closed, is that the case?

It seems you didn't use a top layer, like 2cm(compressed) of coir(with or without verm) on top after mixing the grain spawn with the substrate? I really like using a top layer for cubes, ochras and subtrops. The biggest benefit of a top layer in my opinion is that after you're done with spawning you can mist the top layer to be a little over field capacity while the grains still sit in the field capacity substrate.

That way things shouldn't dry out as fast. It also means that if the surface does dry out during colonization, you can keep misting it until you see mycelium poking through it :awesomenod:

Here you can see the top layer by just looking at the mycelium growth pattern.

I suck at quick answers
