Ive never felt that . Id say youre known for being thorough in your explainations.  On a personal level, youre just a thorough and exacting person in general which is why youre great at this craft.

In my experience, when you speak, people should listen.  Those who do tend to succeed.

They should always have some passive air exchange, even during colonization. Some restriction is fine to keep things from drying out. Now that you are starting to have some surface colonization you'll get a better map to navigate how the conditions are inside the tub.

There's a great write-up here, it's basically keeping an eye on the surface as it's colonizing. You want small beads of water on the mycelium. If the beads get too big or start pooling it's time to increase air exchange, no beads less air exchange.

Tub is looking great though so for now you don't need to change anything

Me personally, i dont ever run tubs without holes in them and id still take a hot screw driver and put a pattern into that tub, even now.  A choked tub is gonna have isssues.

I wonder if keeping the tub taped until I see it fully colonized with little droplets of its own making before I untape and from there maintain the droplets until it starts really pinning would be a good idea, I think I sprayed to early and made the mycelium get matted down because it wasnโ€™t a proper mister. Do you all think a 18 qt tub pastey ez dial hole setup gives to much fresh air in the beginning?

you should not have to change anything. use a pasty-style 66qt ez-dial or equivalent. They are set and forget and require no maintenance or manual changing of conditions. You shouldn't have to spray at all.

I prefer prints to swabs because they are verifiable, but of course, albino varieties have pale spores that don't show on foil.

Has anyone use black foil/cardstock for prints with success? I have Gemini, Albino Jedi Mind Fuck and Yeti that are albinos, and I would like to get prints of them if possible. Then again, I'm not sure if they just don't release spores normally anyhow. Is any cross with PE usually a non printer?

I'm with you boss, ez dial tubs is all I use. But even if that tub above is unmodified, we all know we open it up like twice a day just to have a little peek

:sneakypeek:

So my guess is that it is fine for now  And remember we did that test some time ago, I believe it was Chris that started it. Here it is, and what we saw there was that there isn't much passive air needed. Completely choked and it will stall for sure, but one little hole was all that was needed, for colonization that is.

The way I look at it is this, I want to keep the evaporation as low as possible during colonization so I tape up most of the ez dial holes at spawn to lose as little water as possible but without pooling. As soon as I have my pinset I will give as much air as I can without the surface drying out :awesomenod:

And I am too clumsy to work with unmodified tubs anyway, I would knock that lid right inside my tub fucking up my fruits at least twice a week

Guys, I need your help.

Do these rhizomorphs poking out of the cake indicate some excess/deficiency of moisture/CO2/temperature, or are they completely normal?

Previously when I was growing I didn't question it (the mushrooms came out fine regardless), but I remember having a batch of Mazatapec that was over the top โ€” they looked downright furry.

In the first photograph the mini-dew present on the surface isn't visible, so I took another one with a flashlight and a different phone. I'm maintaining it consistently by doing fine misting when needed, but the Surface Conditions confuse me a little. Because vermiculite, being hydrophilic, doesn't accumulate dew (unless it gets saturated, which we don't want) and only the mycelium (with its hydrophobic properties) is what can actually show me the truth.

Hugs

I personally like 6qt tubs unmodified, and 12's with 1/16th holes that I call my PE/TaT tubs, or more recently, Pan tubs.

And... unmodified for Pans, both can work, but I prefer the extra holes.

Do you use distilled or tap water for the humidifiers? I know that manufacturers recommend distilled/demineralised water but buying it seems such a waste โ€ฆ

I use a cheap RV filter that attaches to a hose outside (fitting is leaking needs to be replaced), I have a big tote, so I fill up a 5-gallon bucket, or 1-gallon jugs to top off.  The advantage of building a fogger, I can go a week or so with a full fill up.

Distilled water can be expensive, and cumbersome, I used to use cheap demineralization drop ins for the Vicks coolmist that lasted 2-3 months, a pack of 4, good for a while.
