No. If you truly can't buy a dehydrator, the bare minimum is a box fan (or similar) on high, aimed directly at them. Put the mushrooms in a basket, on cheesecloth, or on one of those wicker plate holders, then secure it to the fan. Lay the fan facing upward if needed.

You really should get a dehydrator, though.

Even then, they will need to be consumed within 24-48 hours and i hesitate to even say 48. id lie if i said i hadnt done it though before.

get a Presto dehydrator or dehydro (similar) off amazon and get a little vauum sealier as well.

Had an agar mishap the other day which is rare for me. All transfer that I did at a certain time came out like this, with a lot of points of contamination growing. Some have green, others look more yeasty. It happened with a lot of different varieties so not exclusive to one bad transfer. Transfer done at a later time had no issue.

What's more likely:

1- I opened a trich sporulating agar plate without realizing

2- I neglected to wash the surfaces of my table/sab.

3- I didn't clean up proper and got yeasty mold from my arms onto everything.

You'll never get dryer than ambient humidity which is not dry enough. I used to live in the desert, like hang your jeans first then the rest of your clothes and when you get the last sock on the line the jeans are rigid- still not dry enough.

I have had this Ronco in business for a long time, they are cheap, silent, I think I saw one used the other day for 25 bucks. They last forever and do the job perfectly, simple design, heating element, intake and exhaust setup like a BBQ. Mine was a gift... and she keeps on UH givn'

I put them on a tray lined with paper towels and point a fan at them. They take about 72 hours (bigger ones) to dry (that room stays around 30°C / 86°F with 15–30% relative humidity). After that, I store them in an airtight jar with a layer of coarse salt that's been oven-dried at the bottom, making sure the mushrooms don't come into contact with it. They end up cracker dry.

A dehydrator is definitely the better option, but... not everyone has one. :smirk:

How I would have dried mine of I didnt have a dehydrator is Id turn the oven on, full effect for 1-2 minutes then turn it off and open the hatch and place a fan on the hatch directed towards the inside of the oven, id pøace the mushrooms on a rack insode the middle of the oven and turn the fan off until the residual heat from the oven has cooled to slightly above room temp, then id turn it on again very quickly and turn it off again and repeat thos process until fruits were sufficiently dried.

Thats why the oven shouldnt be kept turned on more than a minute every hour or two, the residual heat should be enough to keep humidity down to a minimum theres no psysical way that moisture that evaporates off will be able to linger or go back into neighboring fruits

Anyway, quick question:

Do the proportions of a substrate change BE a lot? Let's say I send one quart of spawn to either a shoebox as a thin cake with lots of surface area, or into a smaller tub where the same amount of sub is 4x deeper, but with 4x less surface area. Will they flush with similar density, and I have to wait for (and survive) many more flushes to get the same quantity of wet fruit? Or is there something like backpressure where the available nutrients will make the cake force higher BE through the smaller surface, either as bigger fruits, denser flushes, etc.

I do know that thin substrates struggle more with moisture retention.

What I'm really getting at here is: are things like fruiting from the top of a jar inefficient af / require running for longer to get the same output?
