Boy these guys are MAD rn.

The shape of the colonization on that one tub is expected, I spawned two separate pints on either side. They were happy (if a bit fuzzy) during colonization, but now that they're knotting up, bruised to high hell.

I'm thinking it's gotta be temps. They've been running 75-80. Last time I ran this culture (w no problems) it was in my living room at probably 65-72.

Dropped them to a lower shelf. Praying. My portable desk ochra (in a pint jar in the office) is happy as a clam. Supports the temp theory.

At least it's doing this.

Haven’t grown ochra for a while. PF cake that won’t let go of the lid. Birthed it yesterday, dunked overnight and I’ll coat it in coir today.

BTW, it was temps. Dropped them to about 68 and they're cheering right up.

That’s interesting- good to know. I’ve only ever grown them in my basement where it’s 66-68 all year.

I guess I did try incubating them in a heated tub with my pans one time and they didn’t do shit (just sat there not colonizing). I assumed it was either a problem with the substrate or bacteria. It didn’t occur to me that they might just be too warm.

I’ve been trying out totes to see how the species grows in it and I’m a little bit confused. Everything that I get from a tote falls over and looks all gnarly compared to a Martha.

This is from the greenhouse. The only thing that I can think it has to do with fresh air exchange.

100 percent it's fae. Also sunlight is a factor, the sun will encourage straight beefy grows

Grown out T2 ochra plates. Got some WBS, mostly white/red millet prepped for noc tomorrow.

How do they look?

This one has some dark spots that can only be seen when lit from the front. They have not changed in appearance, and could be air bubbles. The agar was poured chunky and several plates have bubbles in them.

I am exclusively a shoebox to double shoebox size grower and my fruits grow straight. Depending on the container I’ll do 2-3 holes low on the long sides, 1-3 holes close to the lid on the short sides, about 8 mm size.

Some boxes with 1 hole on top struggle for fae sometimes, so I’ll unlatch the lid, flip it, or flip and offset it 2-3 mm on the long side. This gives me enough air to get happy fruits.

Oh yeah, I think someone posted a setup like that a while back (looked like a mini ez dial tub). I’ll give that a try and also the offset lid. Just flipping the lid or doing a dub tub doesn’t seem to give me enough FAE.

WTF do I do with this thicccc ass overlay?

It’s maybe an inch thick on 2 tubs

On one tub it’s maybe 1/4 inch thicccccc

You can peel it off or let the pins push through. I always wait for full overlay, then roll it up like a carpet with a plastic scraper thing to get the overlay out, mist the surface and let it rip, usually see pins about a week later.

I vote to leave it and see what happens, I've had 2 good cultures so far and both fruited straight through a thick overlay.

Slowest ochras ever?

This is from the same print I was told was over a year old and took a month to germinate on agar. Still trucking along at the same leisurely pace.
