This is what Subtropikalis Coyopolan looks like in the first wave—that's probably him in the photo

The stalled shoebox that I cased came through, the fruits are half the size of my previous boxes but it sure beats getting nothing from it.

This will probably be the last one until autumn/winter as the summer temps here are higher than what they seem to like.

Sorry. I got so tied up staring at Nichrome's boobs I kind of forgot to get back to you on an observation from yours. Boobs can do that lol. In your case it looks like there's a contending gray mold which is likely causing some issues. Otherwise it looks like a fairly normal pin set for today's HVC. They might just need more time or there are some toxins being produced by the mold. HVC is rarely defeated by molds. Tends to just grow right around it. Often encasing it in vitro or deeper in substrates. Molds exposed to air are a little different but still won't always stop it.
The question with yours for me would be.. is it entwined into the culture or was it picked up at spawning. Before tossing and restarting everything I would test the culture on a smaller scale. I take most of my agar to LC so for me it's easier to test in a PF jar.

No problem man, I get caught up staring at boobs myself from time to time :hehehe:

I was not considering there to be mold intertwined as I chucked it up to semperviva mycel just being a bit weird. Just to be clear it's the grayer spots in between the white pinset you're referring to?

(Repost of photo from my previous thread)

I have several cultures from two germ plates going, but I streaked those plates when I didnt have one successful grow yet. So its very possible that I introduced some mold in the plates. I had some trouble with bacteria (i think) so it's also been sent through a cabin as well.

And its nice to know that semps will not care about mold in-vitro, to me the plates and jars looked fine, but it can show up when exposed to air.

Here is the plate for the culture above and it's in one of the jars, but I cant remember what

Here is the same culture from an earlier trial in January

Would you say its the same situation with some gray mold intertwined? To me it sure do look like it. And I should expect the mycelium to be more uniformly like the whiter bits right?

Here is a different culture from a different germ plate but same print:

I still see the same kind of gray/white spotted pattern as the other culture.

My next step will be to do a bunch of AIO jars inoculated with agar as I havent done any LC yet. I got a bunch of half pint jars coming in the near future.

I have also got some new plates from the print going and I will get a diverse sample from there and grow it out.

Thanks for the pointers and sorry for the wall of text and 1000 questions  these guys have given me so much trouble, but its been a blast so far.

Yeah, the gray spots are cobweb mold. It may or may not be entwined as it can be picked up at various phases of the grow. Unfortunately, it's nearly impossible to verify culture entwinement without a scope. Even then it can be difficult to identify until it prepares to sporulate.
On the bright side, it's pretty easy to defeat in a grow. In most cases a good

with water will do the trick. Sometimes it may require more than one treatment and as long as FAE and evaporation are good it won't hurt your mushrooms.. beyond maybe slowing things down for a bit. If the problem is persistent then a 1:1 mix of water/3% Peroxide can be used. If it's really stubborn you can step up to 3% Peroxide right out of the container, but it's advisable to work your way up. 3% Peroxide won't hurt your mushrooms either but no point dumping things on them until required. IMO it's always best to start weak or low and work up if needed. This applies to every aspect of cultivation for me.

On a side note in regards to color.. all psilocybe species should produce a clean looking pure white mycelium. Yellowing after time is metabolites being produced by stressors such as contamination or age. It can also occur early due to several factors both contamination and other environmental stressors like nutrient supply or pH levels. Sometimes it's a combo of both.
Other colors are typically environmental. The mycelium adjusting to it's environment will often express concentric rings that vary in color from reddish, brown to yellow. This is pigmentation being released as it adjusts.
Here's some examples..

Psilocybe heimii loosing pigment

Psilocybe banderillensis loosing pigment

Psilocybe weraroa
Not really pigmented but you can see it saying woah when it hit the new agar lol.

Same thing here..

Psilocybe thaizapoteca
Oddly enough this one did have a greyish hue initially but has long been white since this culture.

How much of a spray are we talking about? enough to see beading like proper surface condition or all the way down to almost pooling?

And I confess, your post made me go down a rabbithole in my semp journal and DMs and I may have found a couple of contam vectors. Firstly I was still using a flexible SAB at the time I streaked the plates. And secondly I ran my PC wrongly for an agar batch where I at most steam sterilized it instead of at 15PSI :stoned:.

I hurridly transferred from these plates to new ones when I found out but it didnt look good

I think I will focus my attention on the new plates i've streaked and hopefully it works this time
Thanks for the help TCO, I really appreciate it

edit: I also have a scope that goes up to 400X so i'm gonna try and take some transfers onto slides and see what I can find.

I checked it with my cheap scope and its a bit hard to see with all the diffraction going on, but I think it looks to be two different sizes of hyphae in there

You have spoken about your suspicion before. My subtrops do this too. Also after a cabin, and not every batch and on every flush. Only ever seen verticillium on one pan and maybe a handful of subaers.

I've also had 'regular' vert on a shoebox of subtrops and they flaked, split and aborted.

They are striking in their resistance to infection. The trich overcame the rotting fruit, but cannot jump on the neighbors. I specifically waited for the infection to develop in order to verify the pasteurized substrate and the resistance of this fungus. Amazing!

:tipofthecap:

Go ahead and get the sprayer right down on the mold spots and pool it up. You'll want to focus there for the most part. It should literally dissolve with a few squirts. Be precise and somewhat gentle on the trigger, but everything in section zapotecorum can take heavy misting as long as evaporation is good and it's not pooled too long. Mostly focus on the mold though.
Your current evaporation looks pretty good so don't over react and hit them with a lot of air. Depending on your set up it only takes a lid open for a few seconds a couple times a day to reduce RH build up.

Are you casing them? Typically, I only get some light surface stuff on my casing when dealing with cobweb but that looks like it's deeper entrenched to me. Could be wrong though. Everything I case with including coir is pasteurized now a days and I have little trouble with surface stuff. People might say pasteurizing coir is a waste of time.. but those people don't live in my house  and are typically dealing with much faster and aggressive cubensis. Exotics tend to be a little slower so it changes up the game a little.
Another thing I've found helpful with slower species and bothersome casings is misting with Azospirillum treated water occasionally. It creates a more vigorous mycelium which tends to overlay. With cubensis overlay is not really desirable but many exotics perform well with it and it forms a protective barrier which tends to stay mold free for a very long time.

Yeah bro, it's been bugging me for a while now. Just with the Coyopolan. Otherwise I've never really seen anything like it short of what people write off as random mutations. Now it could be something locked deep in the genetic dice roll, but random mutation is more the genetics adapting and looking for ways to improve. Kind of a pre-evolutionary step. Detrimental deformities or mutations are typically caused by something else. Usually nothing good. Not saying it can't be otherwise, but my thinking leans that way most of the time.
Vert does tend to have sort of universal symptoms but like you observed it normally ends in ugly lol. This Coyopolan culture just keeps truckin'.
Eventually I'll get around to germinating the print Pheno sent me and that will likely be the end of that. For now I'm just using up the rest of the LC.

I think you nailed it, when I sprayed the surface heavily, some areas melted away cleanly, but others went fainter but still remained. I have cased my tubs, but I was planning on leaving the one we have talked about open for a few more days just to see what would happen. The coir sub of that same tub was also pasteurized as it triched out on me so many times that I thought it wouldnt hurt.

Do you think the tub is salvageable with a couple of rounds of spraying with water, then move onto the H202 spray if it still remains? My guess is that the mold is deep down in the sub and even the grains.

My guess is that the mold is intertwined on my agar plates since I had almost the same looking sub back in january before they went through a round of cabin sequestering. And I have been close to ordering Azospirillum a few times, probably because of one of your posts, but i'll take the leap and do it now

Thanks for confirming it, gives me a good idea what to look for. I will take a transfer from my older plates to check if its enmeshed like the sample above (from the moldy areas of the shoebox).

Thank you so much for the help, these buggers have been throwing me for a loop for a few months and it's so nice to identify a problem

I think it can be salvaged to an extent with some patience. Cobweb isn't really that tough. The question is how toxified the sub has become with all the chemical conversations going on in there.. and it is parasitic. But if you have the time and resources it's worth the learning experience. I'd step up the the H2O2 blend if it remains. It may have gone a little too far but you have little to loose at this point and experience is simply shorthand for mistakes made.

Yeah Treefrog is also experimenting with it. You'll notice overlay on her grows as well. Here's what we've been using..

The best price has been direct through them. I paid $10 US when I got mine though it might be a little more now with WW3 in progress.:crankey:

If that's not available where you are you want azospirillum brasilense specifically. Regardless of brand.

A quick look at the plates confirmed it, I got mold entwined at that step. Heres to hoping im a better grower now than in November and my new plates comes out fine. Now the fun begins where I can go full fuck around and find out on my tubs with good conscience :hehehe:.

I have only found one local source of azospirillum brasilense and it goes for $50 USD for 170g which is why I have hesitated. How long does a bag of your size last roughly?

Thanks yet again, figuring this out is very cathartic after months of failure

I've had that bag since late December of 2024 and hardly put a dent in it. I've been adding about 1/4 teaspoon to a quart sprayer and it seems to keep pretty well at room temps. Most of my work is smaller scale and slow exotics but it should last a long time even with bigger grows.

*edit*

Makes us both better growers as well as people.. and helping each other is what it's all about. Glad I could be of help.

Oh lord those look so good:rockon:... Man I'd harvest these now or within a few days, they're at the stage where mine have been scary potent but if they can go for another week without losing more mushies to trich or rot there's no reason to not wait:awesomenod: I myself usually harvest when they're almost black and a couple of shrooms have died but at this point I start becoming paranoid over getting toxins in the mushrooms.

About the resilience: I'm equally impressed with these. I thought Ochras were hardy but my first semp tray from November is still alive even though it got trich at the end of the first flush. I cut it out to test it and it's still producing, I'm keeping it around to see how long she'll live.

Seriously though I couldn't own that tub without smashing my face into it. It looks fucking delicious.

Caution about potency on these!!  I harvested a tub and freeze dried it right before leaving on vacation.  Ended up with 22g freeze dried.  This morning I ground everything up with spice grinder super fine and placed in 00 capsules.  Ended up with 200 capsules 100-110mg each.  Ran a miraculix test on 3 samples ranging from 23-28 mg.  Chose this size since the last batch tested at 3% actives and this would be near the middle of the range on the tester.  Well....these tested out of range high.  I turned the vials 90 degrees (like my previous erroneous testing method;  which yields results about 1/2 of actual).  After doing the math ended up with 5.2, 5.2 and 5.4% actives for results.  I'll use an even smaller amount next time but damn these are potent.  Explains why 1.8g of the other stuff had the universe bleeding to death.  That was a hell of an intense trip.

I strongly encourage testing these or starting with a lower dose than you think.  I took 2 capsules (200mg) which is about 10mg of psilocybin and have got quite the buzz now.  Feels about the same as a single 400mg ochra capsule.  6 of these capsules would likely be a moonshot.  Every bit as potent as my TTBVI, but these things looked scary as hell when I harvested them (in a good, menacing way).  Hell yes!!!!!

Going to try 600 or 700mg in a week or two for a properly kick ass trip.  Glad I tested them and didn't foolishly take a gram or gram and a half.  I can absolutely see how someone could be terrified by accidentally taking 2 grams of these and thinking they were just gonna have a hard trip........

Canon in D by Johann Pachelbel sounding SOOOO GOOOD right now.  Sorry for posting this in the cultivation thread.  My excuse is I am tripping right now )))

I was just flashing back through some memories in 08 when I first tried them. Clips taken from what now seems like an alternate universe:

Bear in mind Psilocybe azurescens were the most potent on file at the time and we didn't have TTBVI. Things have changed a bit since then. We didn't have home potency test kits and all the resources of the present time. I've also learned to type with caps now.

May 25th 2008. First trip.
ok, 1.5 grams in tea :naughty: these are nothing to take lightly. the experience was far from recreational. those who follow be warned. i'm going to bed now. we'll talk more later

May 26th
the strongest psilocybe i have ever tried hands down. stronger than azures. stronger than any pan for sure. not the run of the mill mushroom trip by any means. spiritual experience is a better term. reminded me of cactus at certain points. it's a very physical ride to put it mildly. more than an hour was spent on the floor
honestly, i'm an old veteran tripper and i seriously doubt i will ever attempt that dosage again. maybe... maybe 1 gram. heh. truly the experience of a lifetime though.
***
there's not much bluing with these. with the exception of the invitro fruits which blue quite intensely. the tea itself was more of a greenish.
don't be deceived! it put some 8 gram cubie experiences to shame. there may be some different alkaliods at work as well. i haven't seen any chemical break downs on this species, but i am certainly curious.
i began to feel the effects within 4 minutes of finishing the tea. within 10 minutes i knew i was in for a real ride. 20 minutes to extreme laughter and visuals.. still no stomach upset at all. within an hour, the longest peak i have ever experienced lasting a good hour or so.
that's when things got really crazy. unfortunately at this point stomach cramping began. i don't know that it was from semper.. could have been something i ate earlier. it didn't really ruin the experience though.. heh, most of the time i wasn't really paying attention to it. there were far more distracting things going on.
i can't stress enough to those who try these to be extremely careful. i know everyone has a different tolerence.. mine being middle of the road, but i can't picture anyone staying conscious on 3-4 grams of these. i wonder if there isn't a mild amount of toxicity. i'm still in somewhat rough shape today lol.
***
the majority of my experience with potent psilocybes lies with our local wood and grass lovers of the pacific northwest US. azures and cyans are very very potent, but to me seem to have a less physical ride than say.. p. semilanceata, baeocystis or strictipes. semperviva is more like these imo.

Some more details on what 'really crazy' actually means. I think the details may be in another thread or scattered across a few sites.
First thing I noticed was, of course, things taking on a breathing effect. Tracers. Warm pulsing colors followed shortly after. Kind of the normal stuff lead up to the peak which at it's pinnacle was a moment of gasping awe unlike anything experienced with any other species.
Now the real crazy sets in. I have hand made sweeping textures on my ceiling. They began turning 3D and vibrating like mad dragon scales. This was accompanied by a deep rumbling noise that could be felt through my entire body and everything I touched. This continued for quite some time through the rest of the story.
Once I was able to over come the cramps and pry myself from the floor the strangest of all strange things happened. I was in literally two places at once.
I could see my vibrating, breathing, color waving living room but layered over that was a primordial outside world. Something like you would see in an old dinosaur movie complete with volcanoes in the distance.
That's when I met them. The Octostumps.
Strange entities that looked much like ragged tree stumps with with eyes. The roots were moving like tentacles as they moved towards me. OH SHIT they see me and here they come! One reached out and touched me which was something actually felt physically. I was scared for a moment, but once the contact was made I immediately felt peace and there was no longer the threat of impending doom.
Then the whole thing collapsed in on itself and I was back in my still vibrating, rumbling living room. Most of the colors had faded at this point but all other visuals were still there and began taking on an even more realistic effect.
I figured now's the time to go outside and have a smoke. Settle down a little bit. It was a beautiful May evening just before the sunset I was hoping to catch. I live on acreage with tons of trees and bushes. A very private setting. I stepped out on the deck lighting the cigarette. When I looked up every single tree and bush looked at me with eyeballs turning my direction quickly.
Nope. Fuck that. Shit's too real. Back in the house where I finished my smoke and took a bong hit that I didn't even feel lol.
So now it's dark outside. Let's try this again. I stepped just outside the door. Everything was fine and if there were eyes I couldn't see them.. but as my eyes adjusted to the darkness slightly I could see a human silhouette standing about five feet away. It moved a little and I could feel it's air. Thinking this might actually be real I reached back in and flipped on the flood lights. No one was there but I woke up the bushes and trees which looked a little upset so back in the house again.
From there out it was music, some food and something to drink. A little more weed. The rumbling and vibrating was down to a low hum and there was a blissful but somewhat beat up feeling from there out. I posted the updated and went to bed.
And here we are full circle. 18 years later finally able to put it all down in one post.

Mush love to you OMC.
Thanks for being such a beautiful a part of my existence.
:loveheart:
