OFFICIAL ENTRY - FLAPPING BIRD - ECUADOR, CAKE 8 (HARVESTED 1/23/26)

--

Some data and observations from my experience with the cakes that I grew:

  • I made 8 cakes this event, 2-each of: Ecuador, Treasure Coast, Fiji, Thai Pink Buffalo.

  • 7 cakes progressed to competition (the 8th was finally birthed yesterday, a Treasure Coast jar)

  • 6 cakes have fruited to-date (the last to fruit was Treasure Coast, with one small fruit, 3 days ago)

  • My approximate combined total harvest from the 5 cakes that have been harvested to-date = 246g wet, which should have dried down to about 7% of the wet weight, or about 17g dry had I dried them. I didn't need the fruit, so I disposed of them. Not a bad haul for virtually no effort.

  • I have made **hundreds** of 12-hr prints from these cakes for trading purposes. I was able to print most of the caps (even the small ones) 5 or 6 times with good dark prints all the way through. I feel that I could have kept on printing for at least one more round, but I now have an insane number of prints and enough was finally enough for me. I will be happy to share these prints - just send me a PM or hit me up through one of my giveaways.

  • I learned that I should probably always fruit PF cakes "right side up", meaning to make the top surface as it is in the jar to be the top-most surface in the fruiting chamber. I had fruited the first 3 upside down (one Thai Pink Buffalo and 2 Fiji cakes), and the last 2 (the Ecuadors) right side up.

  • I found that using a deeper lid in the fruiting chamber, such as a plastic wide-mouth mason jar lid, upon which to rest the cakes, was very desirable, as I could easily add supplemental water to the cakes by filling the lid.

  • The speed of fruiting of the different varieties, from fastest to slowest, for me in this round was: Thai Pink Buffalo > Fiji > Ecuador > Treasure Coast.

Peace to all!

Many thanks! Pure luck - didn't do anything at all to make it happen other than make the cake. Can't wait to see the rest of the crew's results when avail.

Good shit man. I was struggling when I tried birthing cakes and I think I did most upside down. I regretted the decision and turned them back up, and then down a few times until I lost track. I probably fucked up all my cakes doing just that. My reasoning was that I was holding water in better by flipping it.

I definitely agree on using some type of lid as well to set the cakes on. I had only problems trying to bottom water on the jars.

My attempt at getting my Pans to fruit on birthed cakes was so bad I'm sticking to fruiting from jars for now until I get a better grasp.

Maybe there could be a contest for birthing from jars to open up people to this method as well. Maybe the results will surprise some people.

I really appreciate this cake wars contest though because I think there are a ton of people who were surprised by how well their [non-Pan] specimens performed.

They followed teks and listened to advice, instead of trying to reinvent the wheel. At night, on the high seas.
They just took the blueprint for a wheel, said thanks and maybe asked 'What's this ittywitty over here?'

You can still turn around, listen to advice and before you know, you'll be producing harvests like these.

To be fair I did ask several times which way to orient the cakes when I was birthing but everyone was kind of hazy with which way. And I did search, and one of the threads in the pics they were upside down so I just went with that since no one was getting back to me in time. And then what side looked optimal to be on top kept flip flopping on my cakes.

I'm actually still trying to understand the analogy. Did they veer off course to an island to explore?
