Pleez , can you add water to a pinning cake?

if a cake is dry inside can it contribute to abhorts? Assuming all conditions
are right in growing chamber.
Has anyone tried injecting a cake with water while it is pinning to
see if it helps the mushrooms keep growing?
If these flop I will be buying a Hydro pod for sure.

instead of spending a lot more money, you might want to try casing the cakes next time. as it helps in keeping them moist and will push up more flushes.

as for injecting the cakes with water, i've never tried it, but I would assume that you would need a pretty even moistening of the cake which might be hard to do with a syringe.

I was looking at the PF website today and they had an interesting picture of a guy who had drilled a whole into one of his cakes and put a drinking straw in it. They said he then just added water to it? I guess it is worth a try, this guy was getting a crap load of succes whatever he was doing right

i've seen the pix there, very "fruity" ;) for sure.

anyways... i was under the impression that people build those moisture chambers into the cakes before they sterilized them... although I don't see why you couldn't bore a hole out, assuming you were very very sterile, because you might put a contam on the inside of your substrate where you wouldn't be able to easily detect it (visually, at least).

The straw is uasualy used after the cake is colonized. However Some people put a hole in the substrate and place DRY verm in it before setilization. you don't need the straw that way. Works good for me I inject it with a few cc's from a syring of water once a week.

Thanks, I dunked tekked em at birth.. and they have a pf double ended casing.
The mycelium in the top casing is healthy and thick. That is where my pins are coming from.
But they are only about 1/2 -1inch long. The heads are starting to turn dark and
looks like many have aborted. Damn. Well the reservoir tek sounds great if
one began that way. I may have to case them..but I really wanted to get one flush
out of them since they were looking sooo terrific with thick healthy mycelium.
I think I may go ahead and just do one cake first as a test..then
drill a hole in the bottom end where the casing isn't as strong
and turn them upside down. Do the vermic and then use eye dropper to fill with water.

I also did the duble end caseing tek with some. the ones form the top for some reason got as big as yours however the next flush came from the sides and was bigger. Not sure if the verm i had on top was too wet that may have done it.

four of the cakes i had just gave a flush, but as all my flushes theres always the laggers that are trying to develope when i have to pick there friends. there were a few (3-5) small shroomies that i left on while i gave the cake its dunk. after the dunk i put the cakes back in the terrarium, and it looks like the shrooms (i thought that they would die, and then it would be easier to pick them and i wouldnt feel so bad) started growing! these shrooms were pretty small though when i dunked them. you might want to try putting them in a tray with wet verm underneath them. are you using perlite for humidification? if you sre then i would recomend reading up about the vermiculite humidification tek. i dont see why more people dont use? and i wouldnt recomend drilling a hole in youre cake.

It makes sense! Did you use resevoir tek? At what point did the straws go in? how deep?
how much water? How often? Do I need to drill a hole first? How deep?
I did drill a hole a little while ago into one cake, pushed some vermic down in there and
and put about 1ml of water. (everything sterile, of course) I picked off all the abhorts
off all the cakes and saved. Thanks for the picture. Great inspiration.
After this round, I will case but I just wanted to try this again.

Juan Moretime-- Ralphster if you please, you said you injected the water..
I'm assuming a reg inoc syringe.. Once again.. how much water? Just straight
down the center of the cake? Only one injection site or several?

aluminum- thanks.. I have finally shit canned( no pun intended)
the perlite and my cakes are on wet vermic. That might have been part of
my problem before.. too much humiditiy. I had like a half a cup of perlite sittin
in the corner and it was still too much. bye bye perlite. A quick mist and the vermic is
much easier to control. Congrats on your most recent flush that I read about 2 days ago.

Be aware that the PF strain typically abhorts a ton! At least that is what my friend says. Acording to your description, my friend says that he would leave them alone - they sound fine.

They aren't PF's.... eq's and cambodians. But thanks anyway.
I injected a few cakes last night with about 2-3 cc's of water.
When I stuck the needle in the cake it was like concrete inside.( finch seed/brf)
Guess that tells me something. Had to back off the needle 2x so I
could push the plunger down on the syringe. Guess what? Looks
like I have 4 new shrooms this morning. yes!

I've used the "straw" tek, it seems to work pretty well. You have to let the myc heal for about 3 days before you try putting any water in the straw, though. As for injecting them with water...there are companies that sell PF brf/verm jars with a "well" inside. Basically, it's a small cylinder of verm in the center of the jar with substrate surrounding it. It's easy enough to do the same at home before you PC. Then just inject every day into the same hole, and your cake stays completly moist, and supposedly elimiates the need for dunking. I've used these "well" style jars before, am using some now, acutally, and I still have to dunk between flushes, but fruits seem to be much larger on these cakes compared to the ones using the "straw tek" and the ones with nothing (I like to experiment alot...hehe). Or you could just skip all this and use a casing tek. Hope that helps

ive done this before on cakes i had a few years back...cant show pics of how i did it as im not growing atm but i can kinda walk ya through it...
1: find some straws.
2: find a drillbit the same size as the od of the straws.
3: prepare the straws...cut holes in it or use a hot paperclip to poke holes in it (see pics of the braums straw i had from my milkshake)




4: sterilize the drillbit and straws in autoclave bags inside pc.
5: drill holes in middle of cakes.
6: insert straws.
7: inject sterile water into straws.
8: watch ur shrooms grow.

ive done this with sucess several times and i always got many more flushes using this method.
later i started just using the dunk/roll method.
now im looking into bulk substrates and casing.
(this is my first time using pics...hope they work
